SERAPHINA

Erling came up out of the lake alone.

I was on the shingle with Ronan when it happened. I'd been there since the two of them went in, sitting on a cold stone with my arms round my knees, holding the bond the way you'd hold a rope someone's climbing. Not pulling. Just holding.

So I felt it when Kael stopped coming.

It felt like a door closing in another room of the house. He'd been moving, and then he wasn't, and the bond went tight and quiet and very, very afraid.

Then Erling's great

RONAN I read Kael's note four times. The first time, I read it the way you'd read a battle report: where, how many, what's the ground. Hearth room. Iron door. Key on his belt. Eight in the gallery. The second time, I read the last lines. He gave me the knife, Sera. I'm the one who'll be holding it when the moon goes out. Trust me. The third time, I read it for the handwriting. Cramped and slanting, written in soot with a burnt stick on a scrap torn off something, by a man who'd washed himself in wolfsbane until his own wolf lay down inside him. Who'd walked into my uncle's house without a single friend in it, and stood in a corridor, and taken a silver knife out of Hallvard's hand without letting his face move. The fourth time, I didn't read it at all. I just held it. "Well?" said Seraphina. She was sitting across the fire from me with her hands wrapped round a cup she hadn't drunk from. Waiting. Not for permission. She'd never needed that from me. Just waiting to see what I'd

SERAPHINA The bond had been silent for four days. A broken thread is a wound. You feel it bleed. This was something else. This was like holding one end of a rope that went down into deep water and feeling nothing on it at all. No tug. No warmth. Just the weight of it, going down into the dark, and no way of knowing what was on the other end. I checked it every hour. More than that. I'd wake in the night with my hand pressed flat over my ribs, the way you'd wake and reach for someone beside you and find the sheet cold. "He's alive," Asta said on the second day, without my asking. She was sitting on her rock by the water, looking across the lake at the house through her new black eyes. "If he weren't, you'd know. A rope goes slack when the man holding it dies. Yours hasn't." "How do you know?" "Because I've watched you check it forty times since breakfast," said Asta, "and you haven't cried once." *** They came over the moor on the fourth afternoon. I felt Sorcha first

KAEL There's a trick to walking past a guard. Maren taught me that too, though she was talking about getting sweets out of the kitchen at the time. You don't creep. You don't hurry. You walk as if you've been sent, and you carry something. I went back down the corridor, round two corners, and found the kitchens by the smell of onions. A long warm room, lit like everywhere else by that soft yellow glow from the walls, with a fat cook stirring a pot and two boys scrubbing trenchers. Nobody looked at me. I took a bowl of stew off the end of the table, and a heel of bread, and a cup of water, put them on a wooden tray, and walked out again. The guard by the door didn't even get off his stool. "Supper," I said. "For her." He grunted, fished a key off his belt, and unlocked the door without looking at my face. A man who smells of nothing. I went in, and the door shut behind me. *** It was a small room. Bare. Lit like everywhere else, from the stones themselves. And in the middle of

KAELShe came back up the shingle with blood on her lip and her eyes still black, and I knew before she said a word."He's moved her." Her voice was flat. "My mother. She's not in the cellar. She's somewhere in the sunstone, where I can't see." She swallowed. "And they're filling the well. With stones. I felt them go in."Nobody said anything. Ilse put down her knife.I sat on my log by the dead fire and thought about a wet trail of water across a stone floor, glistening in lamplight. About an old man looking at it for a long, long moment, and then at the slow black rings on the water in the well."He saw," I said. "When I was in there. He saw how I got in. So he's closing the door." I rubbed my face. "It's what I'd have done.""Then how do we get in?" said Seraphina.I didn't answer straight away. I was thinking about Maren. About the hundred small things she'd taught me without either of us knowing she was teaching. How the Watch wash in wolfsbane water so no wolf can scent them. Ho

SERAPHINAAsta didn't sleep that night. She said she'd slept for eighty-one years and wasn't going to waste another minute of it.She sat on a rock at the edge of the shingle with a blanket round her shoulders and her bare blue feet wrapped in Torvald's scarf, and looked at the sky. Just looked. Her head moved slowly from one side of it to the other, the way a child looks round a room full of presents.I sat beside her. I didn't say anything for a long time. I didn't want to break whatever it was."The Wolf's Eye," she said at last, and pointed. "There. Low over the hills. I've been writing its name in my books for sixty years. For forty of them I drew it on the charts by feel. I knew exactly where it was." Her voice shook. "I never knew it was blue."I looked. It was blue. A small, cold, steady blue."Asta," I said. "Can I ask you something?""You can ask me anything, girl. Tonight I'd tell you the colour of my own blood.""His house," I said. "Hallvard's. He built it to catch every

RONANWe heard the dog before we saw any of them.It was the morning of the sixth day, and we'd come down off the last of the moor to the old crossing below the Scar, where the river runs wide and shallow over stones the colour of slate. I was standing in the shallows in my own shape with the water round my shins, looking south across the river at an empty road.No convoy. No lanterns. No carts. Then, from somewhere beyond the trees on the far bank, a dog started barking. A deep, delighted, idiotic bark. The bark of a dog who'd seen something wonderful. And a cart came round the bend in the road.Behind it rode twenty of Dunstan's wolves, in Greymarch grey. In front of it, driving, with the reins wrapped round her fists and her hair coming down, sat Cassia. And beside her on the bench, with her left arm bound against her chest in a sling made from somebody's shirt, sat my cousin.***I don't remember cr
