Eva's POV.

Back home, dinner meant warmth, with my husband, it was sometimes quiet whenever we weren't in such good moods, but it was nothing like the tension I faced every meal time that I had to come down to the dining here.

Tonight, as I walked into the dining hall, I had to curl my hands at the sides with the weight of eyes that wanted to pierce into me and uncover every secret I was trying so desperately to guard.

Aragorn and Lady Tory were already seated at the far end of the table, they looked like two halves of a coin that had never quite fit together; there was no conversation going on between the both of them, how sad.

Aragorn lounged back, one arm resting carelessly on the chair, Lady Tory, on the other hand, sat upright and confidently, her dark hair perfectly pinned, her eyes suddenly lit up on guard when they landed on me.

“Eva,” Aragorn’s voice boomed the moment he saw me, a smile tugging at his lips. “There you are. Come, sit.”

Eva's POV.Nicklaus sat dejectedly on the huge stone by the roadside, his broad shoulders slumped as though the weight of the world pressed against them. His fingers dug into his hair, tugging lightly at the strands in frustration, for the first time in a long time, Nicklaus felt powerless. Her name was the echo in his head.Eva.Every step he had taken away from home only deepened the ache, he had thought running from the mansion would give him space to think, maybe even numb the pain, but instead, everything outside reminded him of her too. He left the house, craving some silence but now the silence made him crave her voice, even when she was scolding him.His body was stiff, but inside he was unraveling. He hated himself for letting her leave, he hated that he had pushed too far with his stubbornness. He laughed bitterly, shaking his head, a bitter realization striking him; he can’t live without her. He thought he could, but not with the way he's seeing it right now.The sudden so

Eva's POV.I laid sprawled across the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling; sleep had become distant from me ever since I stepped into Aragorn’s house... Lady Tory’s words from this morning played on a loop inside my head, relentlessly like daggers thrown at the same wound over and over again.“You have a secret.” “You’ll wish you never tried this.”Her voice clung to u tightly, how hard I tried to push it off. I sat up, rubbed at my temples, and tried to steady my breathing, I couldn’t afford to let her suspicion shake me, not when I had come this far, every second I stayed in this house was a risk, and yet, the evidence I was searching for, the leverage I needed to bring Aragorn down, it was worth every gamble. Then came a sudden knock.I froze, my pulse hitching before I scrambled off the bed. I smoothed down my dress, checked my reflection quickly in the mirror by the corner, and only then went to the door. When I opened it, Aragorn stood there, his expression unreadable.“Eva,

Eva's POV.I barely slept through the night. The bed I laid on was soft, yet it felt like a prison made to trap me in; the walls of Aragorn’s house held a terrifying stillness that suffocated me no matter how many times I shifted on the sheets. I missed the warmth of Nicklaus’s presence, even in our coldest nights, even when silence was the only thing between us, there was something alive in the air that reminded me I was home. Here, there was nothing but emptiness and the echo of my own thoughts.I kept rolling from side to side, pulling the blanket up and tossing it off again. My chest felt heavy with secrets. I knew why I was here, I had made this choice. I had walked away from the man I love and the home I built with him to play this dangerous game, but knowing it didn’t make it easier, my eyes stung from the tears I had let out last night, yet sleep refused to claim me.At dawn, I must have finally drifted off, but only briefly, because the faintest sound startled me awake; a kno

Eva's POV. My hands trembled as I stuffed what little I could carry into a small bag, just a few clothes, nothing much... because I didn’t have the heart to take more. Every dress, every scarf, every necklace in this house felt like a memory, a thread tied to Nicklaus. And pulling too many of those threads out would make me fall apart completely.I needed to hold strong and avoid any setbacks at this moment. I slung the bag over my shoulder and wiped my cheeks for the hundredth time. My tears refused to stop flowing, dripping down my chin, dampening the collar of my dress, as though my soul itself was leaking out.I opened the door cautiously, praying he wouldn’t be there anymore, my heart pounded when I peered out... thankfully, the hallway was empty.“Oh, thank goodness,” I muttered under my breath, though my heart ached at the thought of him finally given up knocking. And just like that, I left my matrimonial home behind.Every step I took away from that house broke something in

Eva's POV.I barely made it up the steps when my heart sank. Nicklaus was there. Not by our room, but standing right in front of the guest room door like he knew that was exactly where I was going to come to. His arms were folded across his chest, his eyes darker than night, and his whole body radiated exhaustion. I froze, my hand instinctively tightening around the small scarf I had draped across my shoulders. For one brief second, I considered turning around and pretending I had forgotten something downstairs, but he had already seen me.“Eva,” he said softly, his voice breaking. “Finally… you’re home.”I pressed my lips together, steeling my heart. “Nicklaus, I’m tired, please, just let me get some sleep.”He shook his head, stepping closer, desperation written in every line of his face. “I’ve been waiting here all evening… just to talk to you, even if it’s for a few seconds. Please... don’t shut me out again.”I turned toward the door and rested my hand on the knob. “I’m not shu
