"We need to talk in private," I added, casting a side glance at the intruder in the room; Zegulf Landerman. Gaston nods and clears his throat. Then he directs his attention to Zegulf. "Alpha Zegulf," he calls. "I'll need you to excuse my brothers and me." Zegulf tsks, "You're not trying to get rid of me, are you?" Gaston shakes his head. "I will never do that." Suddenly, Gaston pauses and arches his brow. "Did you get the witch?" He asks. Zegulf clenches his teeth tight and shakes his head. "Do you still have yours?" "Yes, and I'll need your help pretty soon." "You can call me anytime, I'll be willing to help." Landerman offers. "In the meantime, I will wait outside. I want to be kept abreast of whatever is going on with Xyana. Don't shut me out, please." He looks at all of us pleadingly. The way Dion and Declan look back at him, I know they bought his helpless facial appearance that I'm certain is absolutely fake. "I give you my word." Again, Gaston reassures the stupid Alpha that he will carry him along on every news that has to do with Xyana. Killian steps into the room and leads Zegulf outside. Once the door gets shut behind them, I snort loud, too loud, actually. "You should find a way to keep him far from me. I'm only this calm because I'm focused on Xyana. Once her health is confirmed, I will skin him alive." "Clif, can you just focus." Declan cuts me off. That seemed to be the brain reset I needed because I shut my eyes briefly and took a deep breath. When I opened it again, I felt a bit relaxed than before. "What exactly is happening, Alpha?" I ask Gaston. "I didn't give Xyana that necklace. I've never seen the necklace before." "What if... I don't know how this might sound, but have you thought of asking Amon?" Dion asks and everyone turns to me. "Amon didn't do it," I shake my head, half believing myself at this point. There have been times when Amon gets overpowered by the darkness within him that he separates from me while I'm asleep, and he goes ahead to cause sheer havoc within the pack. But that was when the darkness overtook me newly. Then, I hadn't gotten a hand or what the little demon could do to my wolf and me. I couldn't control certain actions of mine. But now I can. And all that is now in the past. I haven't given up control to the darkness for a very long time now. I don't let it control me, not anymore. "Amon didn't do it," I repeat my words again, this time with a little more conviction. "Have you asked him?" Declan joins Dion in his verbal crusade. "I-I-no, I haven't." I suck in a breath and groan barely audibly. "That's the only explanation for all of this," Gaston speaks. I turn to my uncle, and the man is seated, watching my brothers and me as we carry on with the unfolding drama. He doesn't seem to follow the conversation quite well. But he's smart enough not to ask any questions on that effect. "What do I have to do?" I ask the two warlocks in the room. "We will send you to meet her, and you will help her come back." Uncle explains. Amon stirs, rolling around joyfully. "Like I'm going to be her Superman, sort of?" Uncle doesn't answer me. "You have to understand that you have a fifty-fifty chance at this. You might be unsuccessful. However, I need you to come back home if you think she won't follow you willingly. If you don't get back home, you will be trapped with her forever." I seriously do not think I hate the sound of that. If wherever they want to send me to is a bit comfortable and I'll get to spend my time with Xyana for the rest of my life, it doesn't sound so bad at all. "It won't be a sweet experience, Clif. I don't know what you should expect or how Xyana would react to you in another space. Just come straight home if things don't work out." I nod, "okay." "Tell me you understand, Clif." "Yeah, I understand," I murmur inaudibly. "But how do I come home?" "Just speak to Amon, he knows." Gaston replies. "And you know that how?" I ask him. He smiles, "I just know." "Ready?" Uncle asks, interrupting us. "Wait, now?" "Ready?" Uncle repeats. The man must really be a man of very few words. I turn to Gaston, and he nods. Well, what else am I waiting for? "Ready," I reply. The next minute, my uncle touches my arm and drags me closer to him. Gaston connects his fingers with that of my uncles. That is all I remember because the next time I opened my eyes, I was in a plain field surrounded by absolutely nothing.~Zegulf~Pulling Carmen close to me, I help her step over the dying ghoul.Tucking her head into my chest, Carmen asks, “What... What do we do about Marielle?”“Declan,” I say and turn my head toward him. “Is the battle done with?”“It is,” he says, staring at me with eyes I can’t quite read.“Send them off,” I order, and move through the door.Behind me, I hear Declan start to hum a tune about being happy.Weird Howling! In front of me, scattered all over the not-so-Cabin-looking-Cabin, I see countless dead bodies.Alaric slowly makes his way over to me. Blood is splattered all over his hairy, bare chest. He’s picked up a slight limp but otherwise seems whole. He has really proven himself, and it warms my heart that this town will officially become his after we get rid of the Sect, that I have no doubt its members will be scrambling away from this city once the news of Dargo’s death breaks out.Sticking my hand out to meet Alaric’s, I ask the question that fills me with dread. “How do
~Zegulf~I can feel the bones in Dargo’s hands grating against each other, ready to snap.Squeezing down on his hands with all my might, I laugh as he slams his forehead into my face. Not caring when my nose shatters in a spray of blood. Roaring out with glee, I spit the blood running into my mouth into his eyes.“You should have run, Dargo! You should have never let me get my hands on you!”Unintelligible squeals pour from his lips as he feels the bones in both of his hands crushing into dust.Carmen, my soul-fated, my world, my other half, my everything…Those are the words that pummel through my veins as I yank Dargo to me.My fangs hitting the air, I take a deep breath of the fear I smell pouring out of him.“You fucked up, Dargo. You touched her.”Dargo starts laughing. “I’m untouchable, Zegulf. You think I would sit back and let you win me in my own town?”Almost immediately, the air in the room ripples as an auburn-haired, wretched-looking man appears in the room.I know the fo
~Zegulf~Without thought or reason, my body flies across the field where we’ve stationed our starting point, my claws bursting through my skin, my eyes instantly filling with the red haze of seething fury.Carmen is in danger, and it’s completely my fault. How fucking stupid can I be? How fucking naive was I to think she’d be ready for something like this? All around me, I hear roaring. Is it me or my men?No, I can hear it’s different than ours, it’s more guttural. Deep primal roaring.Alaric and his men have begun their attack. Even in my raging bloodlust, I have the presence of mind to remember them. The distance between me and Dargo’s hideout is quickly covered as I use every ounce of my enhanced abilities to reach Carmen. Through our bond, I know she’s in there, but she can’t focus on me.It’s like a wall of cotton stands between us, muting everything. The whole world is falling apart in the seconds it takes me to reach the door on the side of the building. It’s the least used ou

Afraid I’ll break her with my new strength.Letting out a shrill cry, Marielle throws herself back at me, catching me by surprise. “Take me home, Carmen! I’ve been a good girl! I want to go home!”“Yes, you have been a very good girl, Marielle,” Dargo says.Jerking my head to the right, I see him standing in the doorway. Dargo smirks at me before he makes a big show of smelling the air.“I thought I smelled you, Carmen. What a lovely surprise.”Crying now, Marielle clings de
~Carmen~I find myself inside a bar area that’s been abandoned by time. The décor is straight out of the nineties. The smell of old cigarette smoke oozes out of the brown walls. Soft, buttery light comes from a couple of old lamps suspended from the ceiling above the bar.The bar itself is covered in bottles, empty glasses, and dirty plates. A faint moan drifts over from the booths lining the opposite wall, and several heartbeats thrum in that direction. As much as I dread it, the whole thing reminding me of the club, I have no choice but to approach and search for the soul-fateds.I cover the distance quickly, intent on checking and making a speedy exit. Something about the area is setting off my instincts. I don’t know what it is, but I can feel the hair on the back of my neck wanting to stand on end. The closer I get to the booths, the stronger the smell of blood and sex becomes. This is where Dargo and his men have their fun. Peeking into the first dark booth, I see a couple of b
~Carmen~We’re about to teleport into the middle of a viper’s nest. We have no clue where we’ll end up or who we’ll face when we arrive.I don’t have any true control or mastery over my powers. Everything is still very new to me. I feel like a newborn fawn just finding her legs. So, Alpha Gaston is the one teleporting us.The Alpha is so calm, so quiet, so calculated, so careful, and I have no doubt he's also a man of few words…His fingers tighten around mine just before he twirls me in circles, and the world blurs around me, colors... bright pinks, yellows, and purple clouds of black flash in front of my eyes. The world rushes around us until we finally snap into place. Alpha Gaston yanks his hand out of mine, and I open my eyes.‘Where are you?’ Zegulf asks at once through the bond.Wow! The bond can go so far?Blinking against all the dust we’ve disturbed, I nearly giggle as I take in what surrounds us.‘In a store room.’I’m immediately filled with a sense of relief; Zegulf’s rel
