~Zegulf~

Still, one can't take it away from the man that he’s after the welfare of his offspring. The request is for him and his family.

Alaric is a large man, maybe an inch shorter than me, with a barrel chest and thick legs. If I didn’t smell the wolf deep within him, I’d mistake him for something else.

His thick beard and long hair try without success to make him look much older than he probably is.

“We’ll need a proper sit-down,” I say to him, “but now is not a good time. We need to get answers from the hunter before we act tonight.”

Alaric grins through his beard. “No problem here. We’ll keep watch over your mate while you sort things out.”

“The majority of my men can't be found in plain sight, still, If you need help with anything, don’t hesitate.”

“I appreciate that. This city and the surrounding cities used to be big enough for my pack and Warsunng’s when we all migrated from the tropics. But over the last couple of years, it’s changing,” he says, and while I can sense he would like to say more, I know he’s not ready yet.

More and more, this city is becoming a mystery to me. Something beyond what I’ve seen so far...

I offer out my hand again. “We’re here now, and if I have my way, you’ll be at the top of the food chain.”

Grabbing my hand and giving it a shake, Alaric says, “Mind the hunter, something’s off about him. I don’t know what it is, but I can feel it in my bones.”

I pull my hand back and nod. I can feel it too. He reeks of Carmen’s essence so much that I want to end his miserable life for that purpose.

Alaric pulls a cellphone out of his pocket. “We also found this on him. Nothing else. No wallet, no keys. Only the phone and his bag. When you’re asking him questions, make sure you pull up his shirt,” Alaric says, then nods to his men.

Once he leaves, Declan and Xavier move the hunter to a chair. Securing him with duct tape and chains. When I nod at Xavier, he rips the hood off the man.

Gagged with a sock, the hunter blinks his eyes up at me. Sweat gleams across his forehead, and a weird smell oozes out of his pores, making my stomach churn.

“Cut his shirt off,” I say to Brody as I continue to look at the silent hunter.

His eyes are full of rage, like madness has set in. The veins in his arms bulge as he tries to break free from the chains that bind him.

Brody gags. “What the fuck! Did he ingest a can of rotten spray?”

Looking at the others, I ask, “Do you smell him?”

Declan frowns, and Clifton looks at him thoughtfully before saying, “He ingested something forbidden.”

When the hunter’s shirt comes off, I stare at the tattoo on his chest. “You’re truly with the Sect,” I murmur. “How vogue and unique it is to have their symbol. Not that it will serve as any sort of protection for you.”

Grabbing one of the knives from the hunter’s bag, I slash it twice across his chest. Blood weeps instantly from his wounds, and I’m instantly enveloped with Carmen’s very essence, mingled with his.

“What the fuck?” Clifton gasps as he backs away from the vile abomination.

“He ingested her blood,” I whisper in terror.

Brody retches. “He’s fucking human.”

A shrill ring blasts through the room and the hunter’s cellphone vibrates across the table I set it on. The hunter’s eyes widen in terror for only a moment, but it’s long enough for me to know that the phone is a weakness.

I allow the call to go to voicemail. The hunter may have been trained by the Sect to be firm and stoic, but it is not hard to notice the way his body sags slightly in relief.

I smirk through my rage… he has tasted the blood of my fated fucking mate, and he's human! I look at him and pick up the phone. As if on cue, it rings again from the same number.

I accept the call and remain silent. “Kennedy, where are you?” Carmen asks.

The relief I feel at hearing her voice is so all-encompassing that I almost miss her repeating his name.

“Carmen, you have no idea how much I’ve missed you,” I say into the phone.

I hear the shocked gasp of her breath escaping her lungs. Looking out the window, I notice the sun is setting quickly in the east.

I grin.

It’s time to go…

~Zegulf~Pulling Carmen close to me, I help her step over the dying ghoul.Tucking her head into my chest, Carmen asks, “What... What do we do about Marielle?”“Declan,” I say and turn my head toward him. “Is the battle done with?”“It is,” he says, staring at me with eyes I can’t quite read.“Send them off,” I order, and move through the door.Behind me, I hear Declan start to hum a tune about being happy.Weird Howling! In front of me, scattered all over the not-so-Cabin-looking-Cabin, I see countless dead bodies.Alaric slowly makes his way over to me. Blood is splattered all over his hairy, bare chest. He’s picked up a slight limp but otherwise seems whole. He has really proven himself, and it warms my heart that this town will officially become his after we get rid of the Sect, that I have no doubt its members will be scrambling away from this city once the news of Dargo’s death breaks out.Sticking my hand out to meet Alaric’s, I ask the question that fills me with dread. “How do

~Zegulf~I can feel the bones in Dargo’s hands grating against each other, ready to snap.Squeezing down on his hands with all my might, I laugh as he slams his forehead into my face. Not caring when my nose shatters in a spray of blood. Roaring out with glee, I spit the blood running into my mouth into his eyes.“You should have run, Dargo! You should have never let me get my hands on you!”Unintelligible squeals pour from his lips as he feels the bones in both of his hands crushing into dust.Carmen, my soul-fated, my world, my other half, my everything…Those are the words that pummel through my veins as I yank Dargo to me.My fangs hitting the air, I take a deep breath of the fear I smell pouring out of him.“You fucked up, Dargo. You touched her.”Dargo starts laughing. “I’m untouchable, Zegulf. You think I would sit back and let you win me in my own town?”Almost immediately, the air in the room ripples as an auburn-haired, wretched-looking man appears in the room.I know the fo

~Zegulf~Without thought or reason, my body flies across the field where we’ve stationed our starting point, my claws bursting through my skin, my eyes instantly filling with the red haze of seething fury.Carmen is in danger, and it’s completely my fault. How fucking stupid can I be? How fucking naive was I to think she’d be ready for something like this? All around me, I hear roaring. Is it me or my men?No, I can hear it’s different than ours, it’s more guttural. Deep primal roaring.Alaric and his men have begun their attack. Even in my raging bloodlust, I have the presence of mind to remember them. The distance between me and Dargo’s hideout is quickly covered as I use every ounce of my enhanced abilities to reach Carmen. Through our bond, I know she’s in there, but she can’t focus on me.It’s like a wall of cotton stands between us, muting everything. The whole world is falling apart in the seconds it takes me to reach the door on the side of the building. I want to go home!”“Yes, you have been a very good girl, Marielle,” Dargo says.Jerking my head to the right, I see him standing in the doorway. ~Carmen~I find myself inside a bar area that’s been abandoned by time. The décor is straight out of the nineties. The smell of old cigarette smoke oozes out of the brown walls. Soft, buttery light comes from a couple of old lamps suspended from the ceiling above the bar.The bar itself is covered in bottles, empty glasses, and dirty plates. A faint moan drifts over from the booths lining the opposite wall, and several heartbeats thrum in that direction. As much as I dread it, the whole thing reminding me of the club, I have no choice but to approach and search for the soul-fateds.I cover the distance quickly, intent on checking and making a speedy exit. Something about the area is setting off my instincts. I don’t know what it is, but I can feel the hair on the back of my neck wanting to stand on end. The closer I get to the booths, the stronger the smell of blood and sex becomes. This is where Dargo and his men have their fun. Peeking into the first dark booth, I see a couple of b

~Carmen~We’re about to teleport into the middle of a viper’s nest. We have no clue where we’ll end up or who we’ll face when we arrive.I don’t have any true control or mastery over my powers. Everything is still very new to me. I feel like a newborn fawn just finding her legs. So, Alpha Gaston is the one teleporting us.The Alpha is so calm, so quiet, so calculated, so careful, and I have no doubt he's also a man of few words…His fingers tighten around mine just before he twirls me in circles, and the world blurs around me, colors... bright pinks, yellows, and purple clouds of black flash in front of my eyes. The world rushes around us until we finally snap into place. Alpha Gaston yanks his hand out of mine, and I open my eyes.‘Where are you?’ Zegulf asks at once through the bond.Wow! The bond can go so far?Blinking against all the dust we’ve disturbed, I nearly giggle as I take in what surrounds us.‘In a store room.’I’m immediately filled with a sense of relief; Zegulf’s rel
