Everyone gets their wolf when they turn 18, but I lost mine. ** Now, I'm a rogue, a wolfless rogue. Life is hard, even more so than death, but I have to continue on, as the last survivor and the only hope for my people, for I was told that there is one man who can help me, and I must find him. Fate led me to Moonstone Pack. In the possession of its powerful Alpha, I couldn’t help but wonder, was he the one? I had no way of knowing, what the cruel but extremely handsome man brought to me was not hope. It was rejection and destruction. ** His breath was hot as it twirled with mine, his deep voice rough with desire. "These lips, this body, and this heart. "Mine." I shivered and moaned, "Even if you find out who I really am?" "I don't care who you are or what you are–" A pained gasp flew from his lips and his amber eyes widened at the dagger embedded in his chest. Tears were streaming down my cheeks and blood was dripping from my hand that was still clutching the knife's hilt. "But I do."

Chapter 1 : Lost Wolf

Everyone gets their wolf when they turn eighteen.

But on my eighteenth birthday, I lost mine.

***

Steam rose from the pot of stew I was stirring. I watched the wisps tangle and dance as they ascended toward the night sky. I shivered a little when the steam tickled my bare arms, causing the hairs on them to rise. It felt good in a strange way, even though the warmth from our dinner made the cold on the rest of my body more obvious.

I fought back another shiver, straightening and focusing on the task at hand. Uncle Ben would be back from his hunting trip at any moment and he would likely be painfully famished after a full day of finding food for us. I couldn’t let something like the weather keep me from putting warm food in his stomach.

I needed to be strong. Soon, I would be a child no longer. Tonight, when the moon was at its highest point in the sky, I would be eighteen years old.

I stared down into the pot of stew, watching the chunks of meat float in the murky broth. It was hard to believe that Uncle Ben and I had been living in these woods, on our own, for almost six years.

My chest contracted when I thought back to that fateful day when everything we loved was wrenched away from us.

My parents, and my pack, were taken from us in one terrifying instant. My Uncle Ben raised his voice at me for the first time ever, after he dragged me away from our burning home. “That’s enough, Claire. You’re not going back there!”

We became rogues that night, and Uncle Ben had been my only companion ever since.

The smell of the brewing food in front of me snapped me back to the present. I covered the now-finished stew with a sign.

At least, I should be grateful that Uncle and I had one another. As long as he was with me, I would be okay.

Suddenly, rustling bushes and heavy footsteps approached quickly.

“Uncle Ben!”I smiled and turned around. “You’re back!”

As expected, Uncle burst through the shrubbery. I leaped at him, despite him still being in wolf form, and gave him a hug.

“It’s getting late and I was a bit worried,” I said with relief, my face buried into the thick, warm fur on his neck. “I’ve made your favorite stew for dinner. Ready for my birthday party?”

Silence.

“Uncle?” I pulled away a little to look at him, an ominous cloud shielded the moon. My heart started pounding against my chest when I still got no response from him.

Then, he slumped against me and collapsed.

“Claire…” he panted before a pained whimper went through his large body. It was not until then I noticed a dark patch quickly spreading on his side.

I gasped, “Uncle, what happened?!”

“Rogue…” he murmured. We were rogues, but other rogues were just as dangerous to us as to anyone else. Uncle was a strong man but he wasn’t invincible. Our luck finally ran out.

My shaking hands traced the outer edge of the patch. My breath stopped when I saw red had stained my fingers.

No.

I had to stop the bleeding! Rushing over to my tent, I snatched a thick blanket and dashed back as quickly as my feet would take me.

He had phased back. The giant, furry brown wolf was gone. In its place was the man who had been nothing short of a father to me these last several years. He looked so small. His breathing was labored, his bare chest rising and falling as he bled steadily.

I swallowed the sob that wanted to burst from my lips.

“You’re going to be okay!” My heart stopped, but I pressed on, helping him hobble into his tent and dragging him onto his sleeping mat.

I laid him down carefully before rummaging through some of the medicine we kept on hand, gripping one of the tiny bottles tightly as I assessed the large gash on his side. Blood streamed in thin rivers from the torn skin.

“You’re gonna be okay,” I chanted, trying to convince him and myself, but tears started to drip from my cheeks.

Uncle placed a hand over my arm, somehow gripping me firmly. “Claire, I’m getting so tired.”

I gritted my teeth together. “Stay awake, Uncle,” I ordered. “Stay with me.”

“Claire…” he gasped. “Please, I don’t…don’t think I have much… time.”

I shook my head hard, adding pressure to the blanket against his wound only to see his blood immediately soaked through it. “Don’t talk like that,” I tried to say lightly. I reached for another blanket and once again, he grabbed my arm.

“Claire…” His voice was fading.

My hands froze and I looked down at him. His deep brown eyes held mine. The pain was gone from his gaze though he was still bleeding heavily. “I wish… I could stay until you are of age. I so want to meet… your wolf. I have no…no doubt that…she’ll be as brave and…and strong as you are.”

My voice shook. “You’ll still be here. I’m going to meet her tonight.”

He chuckled, but his breathing started to quicken. His hand slid down my arm so that it could grip mine. “L-listen, take care of yourself…Be the brave girl I know you are. Do whatever it takes to survive.”

I gripped his hand, bringing it up to my cheek. The gravity of what was happening was finally slamming into me. “I don’t want to be alone. I want to be with you, Mama, and Papa again.”

“No!” he said firmly, seeming to use what little strength he had left to harden his gaze. “You must survive… It isn’t your time to…to go. You are our…our only hope.”

Panic was starting to settle. I croaked, “What am I supposed to do on my own?”

Uncle was fading quickly, his eyes starting to become glassy. “Stay…alive… and you must…must find him!”

I shook my head fiercely. I had no idea who he was referring to, nor did I care at this point. I didn’t want to hear any of these words. I just wanted Uncle to live.

“Pro…promise me!” he demanded.

I squeezed his hand tightly, letting my tears drip on our interlaced fingers. “I will, Uncle.”

He rasped, but the corner of his lips curled up slightly and he closed his eyes.

Tears flooded out and soaked my cheeks. I kept my grip on his hand, even when I sobbed loudly, and laid my head against his unmoving chest, just as I used to do when I was a small child and needed comforting.

I wasn’t sure how much time passed when my body started to tingle. I whipped my head up and wiped off the tears from my blurry eyes.

The full moon was starting to peek out from behind the clouds.

I sucked in a breath.

Uncle Ben, were you watching? It was time. I was going to meet my wolf.

We were going to meet my wolf.

With one last sob, I kissed Uncle’s hand and then his cold cheek before I stood up, my eyes locked on the glowing moon above me.

My body began to shake as I stood in the middle of our tiny campsite. I stretched my arms out wide, allowing the moonlight to bathe me, making me tremble more violently, feeling as if my chest was about to burst.

The pressure throughout my body was almost overwhelming, suddenly as if it wasn’t my own any more. A sweet, female voice began to hum through my mind. I felt light as if I was floating.

Eyes closed, I let the strange, comforting warmth wash over me. The shaking began to grow faster and my bones were rattling.

I gasped when a loud howl filled my ears before it was cut off abruptly.

Then the pressure and strength building inside my body suddenly dissipated. Just like that, gone, in an instant.

Only cold emptiness was left behind as if everything I just felt was only my imagination.

Ice ran down my spine, chilling me to the bone. I couldn’t breathe.

Had I shifted? Where was my wolf? Why couldn’t I sense her now?

Panic turned into fear and shook me to the core. It took all my courage to open my eyes again.

I was still at the cold, dark campsite, Uncle Ben’s body still at my feet.

I was still sobbing like the useless, helpless little girl I was.

I looked down at myself, at my shaking, bare arms.

My very human arms.

On my eighteenth birthday, I lost the only person I could depend on in the world and the only hope I could survive on my own.

Chapter 2 : Saved?
Chapter 2: Saved?*Claire*Fear gripped me so hard that it was getting difficult to breathe. Instinct had my eyes snapped open when a rogue crashed through the trees and into the little clearing I had planned to camp out for the night.“Shit!” Jumping to my feet, I cursed under my breath and started running for my life. He was large and covered in patched fur. His vicious eyes glinted in the dark, and he bared his teeth threateningly. No way I could outrun a full-grown wolf, but over the past couple of years, I’d mastered the skill to avoid and evade. This forest was nearing a pack. We, rogues, were well aware that if we dare set foot on pack territory, we would expect to be attacked, or worse, executed. I purposely set up my tent close enough to the pack border to reduce the likelihood of running into other rogues, but not enough to make my presence known to the pack and get myself killed.I just didn’t expect some other rogue to have the same accommodation plan as me.With harsh sna

Chapter 3 : She is Special
My bones rattle as the alpha’s voice echoed through the chamber. My eyes widened and I looked around. All the other wolves had their heads lowered respectfully. I gritted my teeth and turned to face him again, looking him right in the eye.I narrowed my eyes, anger welling up inside of me as the alpha looked down at me with his chin raised. His lips were turned toward in a stern scowl, but something in his eyes glinted.Rage boiled over and I openly glared up at him, keeping my stance firm. His thick, angular eyebrows rose in surprise, taking me aback for a brief moment as well. I had broken through his strict alpha facade. Even if it was just for a second, I felt as if I understood the expression well. The asshole was shocked that I had challenged his authority. It likely never happened before. He would just have to get used to it.The fear I had felt when the alpha announced my sentence was quickly replaced with the stubbornness I needed to survive. Who did this asshole think he wa

Chapter 4 : How Will I Prove Myself
My lips thinned as Jared continued to circle me as if I was prey that he was going to play with before eating.I felt myself bristling when he looked at me and smirked. I had been silent long enough. “And how will I prove myself?” I demanded, gritting my teeth. He ignored me and took his time making his way back to his throne. Once he sat down, he looked at his pack and answered, speaking more to them than to me.“As we all know, water has been scarce over the past several weeks,” he said, his deep voice ringing in my ears. “If this rogue is able to solve the issue, not only will I spare her life, but she will also be allowed to remain in our pack.”Jared grinned wickedly down at me right as I felt the grimace form across my face. His look made it obvious that this would be no easy feat, in fact, it was likely going to be impossible.I was tempted to yell right in his face that I had no interest in helping the likes of him. He was setting me up to fail anyway. So I opened my mouth to

Chapter 5 : My Own Room
“Watch where you’re going, rogue,” he spat in a deep, rumbling voice. My eyebrows raise at his tone. “My apologies,” I muttered, not really meaning it. He should have been able to dodge me. Yes, we were in a rush, but we weren’t running, especially, he had the keen senses of his wolf on his side.It was almost as if he wanted me to bump right into him.He tilted his head slightly, looking down at me with danger swimming in his gaze. “I hope you aren’t messing around,” he said. “You haven’t much time left to find a solution to our problem. The clock is ticking.”“I believe I’ve figured out the problem.” I lifted my chin, hoping to sound much more confident than I felt. “I have reason to believe that there is some kind of blockage along the river. Perhaps it would be best if you sent a team out to investigate. I’d guess by the water level, the blockage is several miles up the river.”I felt a rush of satisfaction when Jared’s eyebrows rose with surprise. For a short moment, he didn’t sp

Chapter 6 : He Wanted to Break Me
I stepped back, my heart pounding when the man who just entered my room shut the door behind him, locking it firmly.I didn’t recognize him. His eyes were so dark, they looked black in the dim lighting of my room. His sandy brown hair was choppy and messy around his angular face. He grinned when he saw me and it wasn’t a kind smile.“Get out,” I snapped, having a bad feeling that he wasn’t going to obey.I was right. His dark eyes just danced with amusement as he sauntered toward me. “My apologies,” he said, though he didn’t sound sorry in the slightest. “I just figured I would offer you a greeting of sorts. That was quite the show you put on in the throne room earlier.”I hugged the towel tighter around my body and raised my voice, making it firmer and hopefully more threatening. “Get the hell out, now!”He just chuckled, rolling his eyes as if I was a silly child. “Don’t think so. I was sent over with strict orders from the alpha to make sure that the filthy little rogue stays out

Chapter 7 : Don't Look Now
He paused and I stiffened, sitting up a bit straighter. His light brown eyes were calculating as he gave me a once-over. My heart stuttered nervously. Avery glanced at me in concern as well when she caught Jared’s look.He gave me a long look before facing the rest of the pack. “Needless to say, rogues are extremely dangerous and must be treated as such.”Again, his hard gaze fell on me and my eyes widened. “And tonight, we have one among us.”It was clear that word of my arrival had not reached many people, which wasn’t extremely surprising. Gasps and shocked exclamations echoed throughout the room. I ducked my head slightly, cursing Jerkface Jared to the pits of hell when a few members at our table sent looks of fear and disgust my way.All Jared had to do was narrow his eyes slightly over the crowd and they quieted immediately. “That being said, interacting with the rogue girl without my permissio

Chapter 8 : Get Out
Her pointed nose was tilted up as she walked, but she somehow kept her icy blue eyes on me the entire time she crossed the space between us. While the other men and women at the dinner were dressed in semi-formal attire, Amanda took it upon herself to wear a shimmering blood-red gown that looked like it belonged on a runway. She was undoubtedly angry about something. Her black heels clicked against the smooth floor. Her fiery hair fell in luscious waves down her back, with shimmering pins holding a few strands away from her heart-shaped face.I hated to admit it, but she had a pretty face.I felt Avery straighten in her seat as Amanda approached. She tried to keep her tone pleasant as she smiled at the girl. “Hello, Amanda. Is there something you need from me?”Amanda flipped some of her wavy red locks off her shoulder before poking her lower lip out. “I just wanted to offer my condolences to you, Avery. Chapter 9 : What Are You Waiting For?
I shivered delicately, Jared’s voice seemed to echo through the small space of my bedroom. His eyes burned in the dim lighting. For some strange reason, I wasn’t afraid. A part of me felt resigned. From the moment I stepped foot on Moonstone territory, I knew that death was a possibility for me. Perhaps I had been lucky to make it this long. However, I also felt a spark of rage rise up within me. I tried to jerk my chin out of Jared’s grip, but he held me tightly. “If you’re here to kill me, then what are you waiting for?” I spat coldly. “Get on with it!”I swallowed as my own arrogant voice reached my ears. I regretted the way I spoke as soon as the corner of Jared’s lips tightened before tilting upward slightly. If I didn’t know him better, I might mistake the bastard’s sneer for amusement.Either way, I refused to break eye contact with him. If he killed me, I wanted to look him defiantly in the eye as he did.My coherent thoughts scattered for a moment as I attempted to glare at h

Chapter 10 : Rogue Girl
I should have known better than to trust a rogue, I thought to myself as I paced along the edge of the lake. She would apparently rather die by drowning than by my hands, which I respected in a way. I cursed again, even louder.I could have easily grabbed her before she dove in. She was quick, but I knew that I was faster. Why was I hesitating so much?I was just about to jump into the lake to look for her when a small dark head emerged from the depths.Rogue Girl shook her long dark hair away from her eyes and peered up at me. She waved her arm, gesturing behind her. “This way!”I blew out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. Looking in the direction she was gesturing, my eyebrows rose at the island toward the middle of the lake. Before I could say anything, she turned and started to swim toward the island.I hesitated briefly before jumping in after her.She didn’t look like it considering how small and frail she appeared, but Rogue Girl was a decent swimmer. She seemed to e
