LOGIN~Selene's POV~The Inter-Pack Council chamber is larger than the Cresthaven elder council room and colder in the way that formal neutral spaces tend to be, the kind of place designed to belong equally to everyone who uses it and therefore to feel personal to no one. Selene has been in it once before, years ago, for a routine territorial review that Caden led while she sat at the table beside him in her capacity as Luna. She remembers it as a room full of careful, measured language where very little was said directly.Today is going to be different. She arrives with Miriam and Dax and takes her seat on the petitioner's side of the table before anyone else is in the room. She does not pace. She does not review her notes again. She has read the counter-argument enough times that she knows every word of it and reading it once more will not make it stronger. She sets it on the table in front of her and folds her hands on top of it and waits.Vivienne enters four minutes before the session
~Pack Witness — Third Person~Rhys is the first one to arrive at the elder circle perimeter, though he would not be able to say afterward exactly when he left Pack Hall or how long the drive took. He knows only that after Caden drove south through the settlement and the gate reports stopped coming in and the pack bond settled back into something that felt less like a held breath and more like an exhale, there was only one place that made sense to go.He parks at the edge of the road and walks the rest of the way.Others are already there when he arrives. He does not know who came first. A few of the senior patrol captains, still in their gear from the night, mud on their boots. Two women from the main settlement who have lived in Cresthaven longer than Rhys has been alive. Nadia from Pack Hall, standing very still with her arms crossed over her chest. More coming along the road behind him, ones and twos and small quiet groups, all of them drawn by the same thing, which is nothing anyo
~Selene's POV~She listens to all of it.She does not rush any part of the listening. She lets each sentence arrive and settle before the next one comes, the way she has learned to receive things over the past ten months, without the old instinct to process everything into something manageable before she has actually taken in its full weight. He speaks plainly and without performance, and she stays on her knees on the cold stone and takes every word in properly. When he is finished she waits another moment. Not for effect. She wants to be sure she has the right words before she opens her mouth, and she has learned this year that the right words rarely arrive in a rush."I don't forgive you yet," she says. She watches him take that in. He does not flinch and he does not try to explain or qualify or reassure her that he understands. He receives it. The way she told herself months ago she would need him to, before she could believe any part of this was real."It isn't a performance," she
~Caden's POV~The battle ends just before dawn. Not with anything dramatic. The line holds, Dorian's warriors pull back in stages, and by the time the sky starts to lighten at the edges, the northern gate is quiet. Two of his men are injured. No one is dead. He stands at the gate for a long moment after the last of Dorian's force disappears back across the border, and Rhys comes to stand beside him without saying anything."How many of ours?" Caden asks."Seven wounded. None critical." Rhys pauses. "Something happened in the middle of it. You felt it?"He had felt it. Everyone in the pack had felt it. He doesn't have a precise way to describe what it was, only that at the moment the line had started to waver, something moved through the pack bond, steady and clear, like a hand pressed flat against a wall that was about to give way and holding it still through sheer presence. The wavering stopped. The conviction came back into his warriors and drained out of Dorian's at the same time.
~Selene's POV~The elder circle sits at the edge of the settlement, a wide ring of standing stones worn smooth by centuries of weather and reverence, and Selene reaches it just as the first faint grey of pre-dawn begins to soften the black at the edges of the sky, Dax falling back at the outer boundary without being asked, some instinct in him recognizing immediately that whatever happens past this point is not his to enter. She stands at the threshold for a long moment, the vibration she felt through the south house walls now arriving as something closer to sound out here, distant and irregular, the unmistakable noise of a battle she cannot see but can feel pressing against the edges of her awareness from somewhere north along the gate line. She does not know, stepping across the boundary into the circle itself, exactly what she expects to happen. She knows only that something in her has been building toward this for months, the dreams in Silvermere, the marks along her wrists growin
~Caden's POV~The alert comes through at 3:02 in the morning, three separate signals arriving within the same minute from three different points along the northern gate, and Caden is awake and dressed before the second one finishes registering on his phone. He has run enough border incidents over the past months to know, almost before he has fully processed the details, that this one sits in a different category entirely. The earlier incursions were probes, measured, testing rotation gaps and patrol timing, the kind of pressure designed to find a weakness rather than to force a breach. This is not that. The reports flooding in over the next several minutes describe coordinated movement along the entire northern perimeter, numbers far beyond anything Dorian has committed before, the unmistakable shape of a force that has decided it has nothing left to lose by spending everything at once.He reaches Pack Hall in under ten minutes, the streets empty and dark, and finds the war room alrea
~Caden’s POV~Four months.Four months since she walked out of this building and I have done nothing but work, manage, control, and refuse to think about the precise way she looked when the bond broke — the colour that left her face, the sound she didn't quite manage to suppress.I spin my phone sl
~Selene’s POV~The rejection is scheduled for nine o'clock.I know because Caden's message at six in the morning is clinical and precise, as if he is confirming a conference call.Pack Hall, third floor, nine a.m. Come alone. My mother reads the message over my shoulder and says nothing. She presse
~Selene’s POV~I hang up.I don't think about it — my thumb simply moves and the call ends and I stand on the pavement outside the flower stall with my heart hammering so loud I can hear it in my temples.Three seconds later, she calls again.I watch the screen. Let it ring. Let it ring. Let it rin
~Selene’s POV~"Congratulations, Luna Ashford. You're going to be a mother."Dr. Priya Noel's voice is still ringing in my ears as I step out of the private clinic and into the pale afternoon light.I stop on the pavement, pressing one hand flat against the cold stone wall to steady myself, the oth
