Chapter 10

I was having a nightmare again about Steven, so I skipped class, as Sylvia had advised. She was worried sick about me. I tried to ease her worries by making a joke about my health, but the fear in her eyes made me guilty.

"This is not progressing, Nathalie! The medications you were taking do not have any effect on your body anymore!"

"Mom, I'm really alright - "

She cuts me off, "No. Your condition is getting worse, my dear..."

My mother was already stressed about me, and I reassured her that I would do just fine. I could feel my heart clench when I caught her crying in the kitchen. The fact that she cried because of me made me feel guilty.

A doorbell was heard in our house when I was chilling in the living room. Sylvia was cooking and stopped me, saying that she would get it.

"Mom, who was it?" I asked while turning on the TV screen. When she didn't reply, I looked back and saw that it was an unexpected guest.

"Professor Evan..." I whispered and looked at him with widening eyes.
