Scarlett’s magic smells different now. Not like wolf, feral and wild and tangled in instinct. Not like blood-magic either. That always carries the scent of iron and wrongness.

This is older. Sharper. Burned jasmine. Cracked stone. Ashes wet from rain. I’ve only smelled it once before. In a vision of the battlefield at Verrad’s Gate, when a conjurer burned down both armies in a single breath and left behind nothing behind but scorched earth and silence.

The Weavers called it world-fire. And Scarlett is carrying it in her bones like a secret trying to speak. I watch her from across the room.

Cerelia and Soren are walking in circles around the inn. He’s protecting her while she reinforces the perimeter wards. It’s been decided Erik and Scarlett will stay here for now. Close to us, if help is needed.

Erik is pretending not to pace just outside the hall. He’s smart enough to give her space, but not brave enough to leave her alone entirely.

Scarlett sits by the hearth with her knees p

ErikWhen Victoria returns, she’s different. It’s subtle, at first. Her shoulders are more relaxed. Her steps are lighter. She seems much more relaxed. Like something that had been straining beneath her ribs finally let go.She doesn’t meet my eyes and I don’t press her. But I watch her closely. The way her fingertips hover too long over the warding stones. The way her magic flickers just out of sync with mine. The way she smiles at Cerelia just a touch too sweetly. And later, when she tells me she’s ‘too tired to train,’ her voice is too smooth. The words seem rehearsed. And there’s no trace of the genuine exhaustion she normally feels by this time of the day.Loki’s been here. Not in body perhaps, but in influence most definitely. And I missed it again. He always seems to be at least one step ahead of me and it’s infuriating.I find her in the hallway after dinner, pretending to read one of my mother’s books on elemental attunement. She’s leaning against the wall, back straight, per

VictoriaI’m sure magic shouldn’t feel like this. It shouldn't be alive. Coiling beneath my skin, pushing against the edges of my bones like it wants to stretch, spill, consume. I may not exactly be an expert on the field, but Erik never seems to be fighting to co-exist with his magic.I don’t wield it. I contain it. Barely. Erik keeps telling me I’m improving, but I think he’s lying. Trying to make me feel better. The training circle behind the inn is scorched from our last attempt at flame control. He says it was ‘impressive for someone untrained’. I say I nearly lit his eyebrows on fire. He laughed. I didn’t. I don’t want to hurt him.Today, he watches me with that same patient frown, arms folded, eyes narrowed against the afternoon sun. I can feel him tracking every flick of my fingers, every wobble of power behind my spells.“Again,” he says. “I already did it again,” I complain. “And your ward collapsed, so again, and this time keep it in place.”I grit my teeth. “It held for te

HildaSomething’s wrong. Not loud, fight-in-the-streets, blood running freely kind of wrong.No. This is the kind that comes creeping in on soft feet. The kind that makes the birds go silent and the wind too still. The kind that sets a wolf’s teeth on edge before the first drop of blood falls.Raventon is too quiet this morning.I sit on the edge of the inn’s balcony, legs swinging over empty air, eyes trained on the cobblestone street below. No carts. No chatter. Just the occasional flicker of movement behind curtains. The humans feel it too. They don’t know what’s coming, but their bones are whispering.Mine are howling.Arlo leans against the door frame behind me, arms crossed. “You’re watching again,” he comments. “I’m waiting,” I say. “For what?”“For the thing that’s making everything else wait.” He doesn’t argue. Just walks over and settles beside me, big and solid and steady. Like always.“Something’s shifted,” I add. “Scarlett smells like lightning and burnt earth. Signe look

CereliaI’ve spent the last two hours elbow-deep in scrolls I promised myself I’d never touch again. Most of them were deemed too old, too damaged, or too cursed. I kept them anyway. And now I understand why I couldn’t throw them away. Scarlett’s magic isn’t just changing, it’s fracturing. That’s what the runes show me when I trace her magical signature. Not a clean line. Not the natural progression of power evolving. Splinters. Fragments of an identity being pulled in two directions.Light and shadow. Bloom and burn. Human and something else. We all knew that someday there might be more to deal with.Lilith was ancient when she died, a legend of twisted power. But even she had to start somewhere and we don’t know much about her origins.Underneath Scarlett’s power there’s something far older than even the Court of Fire. A resonance I’ve only ever read about before. Something divine. Or monstrous. Depending on your point of view.I press a palm to my forehead, trying to steady my puls

ErikShe’s not in bed when I wake up, but her side is still warm. Which means she only just left.I sit up, blanket falling away, and push a hand through my hair. The sky outside the window is just starting to bruise with morning light, casting the room in a half-shadow that makes everything feel unsettled. The rooftop door creaks open a minute later. Scarlett steps inside, barefoot and flushed, wrapped in moonlight like a second skin.Something’s changed. I feel it before she says a word. Her magic hums beneath her skin, more present, more alive. It pulses with each heartbeat, answering to nothing but her. Or maybe not even to her anymore. Maybe to something older. She closes the door gently behind her. “Where were you?” I ask. Her head tilts slightly, lips parting, but there’s no guilt in her expression. No shame. Only truth.“I spoke to Loki,” she tells me. The words hit like a fist to the ribs. I stand and stare at her in disbelief. “You what?” We discussed the necessity of gettin
