Chris

Ilsa shows up late, as always. We hear her before we see her.

Heavy boots clomping down the gravel path like she’s auditioning for a role as a particularly aggressive horse, swearing at something under her breath, and muttering about “idiot border glyphs” and “tripping hazards.”

Then she rounds the corner with three bags slung across her body, a weatherproof pack banging against her hip, and her blond hair piled on top of her head like it gave up on gravity halfway through.

She looks exactly the same as she always does. Like she couldn’t give a damn about what anyone thinks, while still managing to be the most gloriously attractive single female in the vicinity.

She grins when she sees me. “Hey, Chris.”

“Ilsa.” I smirk. “Still dragging around ten kilos of cryptid teeth and conspiracy notebooks, I see.”

“Shut up. One of those notebooks helped me survive a three-day detour through fog that whispered. Whispered, Chris. I don’t care what Soren says, that was not weather.”

HildaThere’s something obscene about how arrogant he looks.Arlo.Leaned back in a chair two sizes too small for him, ankles crossed, beer dangling from one hand like he owns the damn moon.“Stop looking at me like that,” I mutter. He lifts a brow. “Like what?”“Like you’re picturing me bent over the kitchen table.”“I mean…” He grins. “Now I am.”I huff and toss my towel over my shoulder, pretending I don’t feel heat flicker low in my belly. The kids have scattered.Scarlett vanished with her human again, Chris and Elliott are probably tangled up somewhere trying not to scar anyone emotionally with their adoring amorousness, and the house is finally quiet.Too quiet. Which is always dangerous. I walk past him toward the sink, just to prove I can.He doesn’t stop me, but I hear the shift in his breathing. Feel the press of his gaze on the back of my neck like a hand. He can smell my desire.I wash one dish. Just one. Then I turn around slowly to face him.Arlo’s still sitting in the

ErikScarlett is already in bed when I step into the cabin. She’s sprawled across the mattress like she owns every inch of it. Which, to be fair, I suppose she does. One leg is kicked out, the sheet barely covering her hips, her hair a dark mess over the pillow. Her head turns as I close the door. She doesn’t speak, She just watches me. And that’s a problem, because she always sees too much.I know she’ll tell me not to worry about ageing. That she doesn’t care what I look like. That I’ll always be hers and she mine. But it’s not that simple.I toe off my boots and peel off my shirt, moving slowly. I’m not tired, I just don’t want this to end.The laughter outside. The warmth in this room. The way she looks at me like I’m still her first and last choice.I’m not sure how long I have with her, but I know it’ll never feel like enough. Even if we have eternity. She sits up as I cross the room, and when I reach the edge of the bed, her hands find my waist. Fingers slide beneath the waistb

ScarlettThe first thing I do when I wake up is sniff the air.Not for danger, for coffee. But I can’t smell any, which should be classified as a crime. A terrible violation of basic werewolf hospitality.I fling the blanket off and stalk out of bed. Erik’s not here. His boots are gone, and so is his scarf. The one that smells like pine and citrus and him. My favorite one to steal. How dare he?I throw on his hoodie in revenge and make my way toward the kitchen, half-expecting to catch my mom wrestling a coffee pot into submission.Instead, I find Chris perched on the counter, shirtless and smirking, eyeballing the apple in his hand like it’s plotting something.“Why is there no coffee? And stop looking so smug,” I say.He lifts the apple in a lazy salute. “You look like you lost a fight with a storm cloud, I’ll stick with smug, thank you very much.”“Your face looks like it lost a fight with evolution,” I tell him, staring balefully at the cold, empty coffee pot.“Aw. I missed this.”

Five years laterErikIt’s been less than an hour since we arrived, and Scarlett’s already vanished into a cloud of wine and women.Which is to say, Hilda dragged her off with a bottle and a grin, muttering something about ‘catching up’ and “Howling at the moon.”I know better than to ask questions. Scarlett will tell me later what they’d been up to.The pack lands haven’t changed much since our last visit. The forest still leans in close like it wants to listen. The wind still smells like cedar and smoke. Wolves pass by with nods or grunts.I’m not quite one of them, but I’m not a stranger either, so they tolerate me.I find Arlo behind the training ring, chopping wood with the kind of force that suggests the wood did something to piss him off.He glances up when I approach, eyes narrowing. “You looking to help, or just loitering like prey?”“Would helping involve splinters and shame?” I ask, eyeing his huge form.“Definitely.”“Then I’ll loiter.”He snorts and plants the axe into th

ChrisIt’s quiet. The good kind of quiet. No danger humming in the corners, no sense of someone watching, no magic crackling in the air.Just the sun filtering through the windows of the inn, and Elliott beside me, one leg bouncing under the table like he’s trying not to explode.“Stop doing that,” I murmur. He glares at me, but he stops.I grin and nudge him with my knee. He nudges back. We’re pressed together hip to knee, close enough to share warmth, close enough that I can feel the buzz of nerves radiating off him like electricity.“They’re going to be fine,” I say.“You don’t know that.”“I do.”“You’re too confident.”“And you’re too beautiful to be this stressed.”Elliott chokes on a laugh and his cheeks go pink. “That’s not how this works.”“It should be.”He looks at me, eyes softening. “Are you scared?”I consider it.“No,” I say honestly. “Not of them.”And I’m not.I’ve seen what the world looks like when it’s falling apart. I’ve stood on broken streets with blood on my ha
