LOGINThe first lecture for the morning started. Lucy sat in the third row, her hands were still shaking from earlier. She hadn’t been able to focus or write anything. She just kept staring at the blank page on her notebook.
"Why do you look like that" Zoe whispered, as she sat on the seat beside her just as the bell rang. “How?” “Sad… and distracted” "I'm fine," Lucy lied, her voice low. "I’m Just tired." Zoe patted her back softly as she looked towards the back of the room. "Don't let him get to you. You know Adrian. He’s just in one of his moods. Focus on class, you know this is the big one." Professor Harrison, a tall skinny man with round black-rimmed glasses walked into the class. "Welcome to Advanced Literature. This semester, we explore the theme of 'Tragic Devotion.' To do that, you will be paired up for the entire semester to analyze the book. This project is forty percent of your grade. No exceptions and most importantly, no switches." The students started murmuring. Lucy’s heart skipped. This was her chance. She looked toward the back, searching for Adrian. If they were paired together, he would have to talk to her. They could finally fix this. "I have already assigned the partners based on your entrance essays," Professor Harrison continued, adjusting his spectacles. "I want conflicting ideas. I want debate." He began reading names. Lucy held her breath. "Adrian Matthews... with Zoe Vance." Lucy was shocked and disappointed. "Oh, Lucy! I’m so sorry. This is so awkward. Do you want me to ask for a switch?" Zoe said. "He said no switches," Lucy managed to say. She looked at Zoe, expecting her to be as frustrated as she was but strangely, she looked excited. "And finally," the professor’s said, "Lucy Quinn... with Jonathan Blake." Lucy blinked. Jonathan? She hadn’t heard that name before. She looked round the class and then, she saw him at the back. It was the guy from earlier, the one who had seen her in the hallway. He was sitting at the last row, leaning casually against the chair. When their eyes met, he didn’t smile, he just nodded at her slowly. "Alright,go and pair up with your partners. Discuss your various parts of the project.' You have twenty minutes." The students hurriedly stood up. Zoe hurried off to find Adrian, leaving Lucy sitting alone. A minute later, she saw someone standing close to her desk Jonathan pulled out the chair close to her and sat down. He was even more intimidating as he was closer. He smelt like grease and engine oil. It was way different from the expensive perfumes and colognes Lucy was used to. "I guess we’re stuck together Quinn," he said. His voice was extremely low and deep. "It seems so," Lucy said, trying to regain her composure. She opened her textbook to the first chapter. “I already read this book twice, I think it focuses on sacrifice. The male lead chooses his family over his own desires. It’s romantic, when you think of it. To be that loyal” Jonathan laughed out sarcastically. "Romantic? You actually think it’s romantic?" he asked, "It’s stupid. It’s not beautiful in anyway. He spends his entire life being miserable because he’s afraid to let his family down. That isn't loyalty, Lucy . That’s being a coward." Lucy immediately felt angry. "It’s not being a coward to honor your family. There are things bigger than our own feelings. Families, traditions, the people who rely on us…" "And who relies on you?" Jonathan interrupted. His honey-brown eyes locked onto hers intensely."You talk about loyalty. From what I saw in the hallway this morning, your version of loyalty looks a lot like being treated like a slave." Lucy flinched as if someone hit her "You don't know anything about me or about my life." "I know you’re a girl who's being mistreated and still calls it love," he said bluntly. He voice was louder now. He didn’t sweeten his words. "If your loyalty means you let people belittle you, then I’m sorry, it’s a prison” "We are here to discuss our projects, not me or my love life. Mr Jonathan Blake." Lucy snapped, her voice trembling with anger. She hated that she felt vulnerable, she hated that Jonathan felt like he knew her too well. Jonathan leaned back, a small smirk appeared on his lips. "The book is your life, Lucy. That’s why the professor paired us. You’re the girl who lives by the stupid rules, and I’m the guy who thinks the whole system should be burned down. This is going to be a long semester." Across the room, Lucy caught sight of Adrian and Zoe. They were seated close, looking over a notebook. Adrian was actually smiling.., a real, genuine smile she hadn't seen in months. Zoe laughed at something he said, playfully hitting his shoulder. Lucy immediately felt jealous and frustrated. "They look busy," Jonathan said quietly. He had followed her gaze. His tone completely changed, like he pitied her "Is that the guy? The one you’re sacrificing yourself for?" "He is my fiancé," Lucy said, her voice was still shaking. "He's a fool," Jonathan replied sharply. He stood up as the professor called for everyone’s attention. "Here is my number," he said, he quickly wrote it on a piece of paper and shoved it too her. "We need to start the outline tonight. Don't be late. I don't like waiting for people, I have better things to do." Lucy stared at the paper. Her heart could not stop racing, she could still feel his presence. He was rude and blunt. He had insulted her beliefs and her relationship within ten minutes of meeting her. But soon, she realized she was no longer thinking of how Adrian had ignored her earlier, but rather her only thoughts were on Jonathan, the new transfer student who seemed to enjoy getting on her nerves.Lucy groaned as she woke up, her neck stiff and her back aching. As she blinked her eyes open, she realized she wasn't in her bed. She was still sitting at her desk, her forehead resting on the open pages of her art history textbook. She sat up slowly, rubbing her sore neck. Across the room, Zoe was standing in front of the full-length mirror, blotting her lipstick with a tissue. She was already fully dressed in a stylish knit dress and tall boots."Zoe?" Lucy’s voice was thick with sleep. She glanced at the clock on the wall and her heart stopped. It was 8:15 AM. Her test started at nine. "Why didn't you wake me up? "Zoe didn't turn around. She adjusted her hair in the mirror, her expression neutral. "I saw you passed out pretty hard, Lucy. Honestly, you looked like you really needed the sleep. I figured ten more minutes wouldn't hurt, and then I got distracted getting ready. I thought your alarm would go off eventually.""My alarm was set for six," Lucy said, grabbing her phone. T
## Chapter Fifty-Five: The Two WorldsJonathan sat at the head of the table surrounded by six senior executives at the Blake Holdings building. He was no longer wearing a worn-out hoodie or carrying a backpack. He wore a charcoal-grey suit tailored to his frame, a crisp white shirt, and a silk tie. His hair was brushed back, revealing the sharp expression he usually hid from the world. His Uncle Marcus sat to his right, leaning back with his arms crossed. Marcus didn't speak; he was there to watch his nephew take the lead."The Matthews Global quarterly report was released this morning," Jonathan said. He didn't look at his notes. He kept his eyes on the executives. "At first, they look like they are doing well. But if you look closely at their debts, you see the truth. They owe way too much money.""They have the Quinn merger to stabilize them, Mr. Blake," one of the older executives said. "Once that contract is signed, their valuation will jump. It will be much harder to move agains
The library was almost silent, the few remaining students were huddled at the far end of the floor, their backs turned. They were completely hidden in their shadow-drenched corner.Jonathan turned his gaze back to Lucy. His hand was still resting on her arm, his thumb tracing small circles against her skin. He didn't just lean in. He stopped, his face inches from hers, his eyes searching hers with a raw, quiet sincerity."Can I kiss you?" he asked. His voice was so low. Lucy didn't reply with words. She couldn't have found them if she tried. Instead, she leaned in, closing the small gap between them. When his lips finally met hers, the rest of the world simply evaporated.Jonathan’s mouth claimed hers slowly. His hand slid from her arm to the back of her neck, fingers threading into her hair as he tilted her head just enough to deepen the kiss. His lips were warm, soft yet insistent, moving against hers with a deliberate rhythm that made her stomach tighten and her toes curl.Lucy g
Lucy’s mother stood by the window, clutching her phone as if it were a lifeline. She looked at Lucy, her eyes red from crying, then dialed a number."Adrian? It’s Martha Quinn," her mother said, her voice trembling. "I am so sorry I didn't thank you properly at the hospital before you rushed off. Things were so chaotic, and I was in such a state... I just wanted to tell you that you are a godsend. We would be lost without you."Lucy sat stiffly in the plastic chair, her skin crawling. Adrian’s voice came through the speaker, it was completely different from the cold, threatening man who had just whispered in Lucy’s ear that he owned her."Please, Martha, don't apologize," Adrian said, his tone dripping with fake sincerity. "I understand completely. Family looks out for family. I’ve already arranged for a private nurse to arrive this evening so you can go home and be with Leo. You shouldn't have to handle this alone.""You are so kind, Adrian. Truly," Martha sobbed."I’ll check in toni
The lilies Adrian had given her were still sitting on the desk when Lucy returned to her room, their white petals beginning to curl at the edges. She walked to her bed and lay down, staring at the shadows moving across the ceiling. Her mind was far away from the flowers and the campus gossip. She was thinking about Jonathan. She imagined what it would feel like to walk into the university ballroom with him. In her mind, there were no cameras and no grand speeches. There was just the way he looked at her in the library and the steady warmth of his hand. She imagined dancing with him in a corner where no one could see them, she smiled slowly as she drifted into the fantasy. Her phone rang and shattered the silence.Lucy stood up and picked up the phone. "Lucy!" Her mother’s voice was a high, broken scream. "You have to come back! Your father—he was talking to me, and then his face just... he couldn't speak. He collapsed. They’ve taken him to emergency.""I’m coming, Mom. I’m coming righ
The heavy scent of the lilies followed Lucy around as she walked toward the library. She had left the massive bouquet in her dorm room, but the floral perfume seemed to have soaked into her sweater. The campus was still buzzing. Every time she passed a group of students, they stopped talking and stared at her. She kept her head down until she reached the arts department. She turned the corner and nearly walked straight into Jonathan. He was standing by a stone pillar with a stack of heavy books tucked under his arm. He looked up, and for a second, neither of them moved. The air between them suddenly felt very thin. Lucy felt heat rush to her face, her skin prickling with the memory of his apartment. In that moment, she remembered the way his hands had felt on her waist. She remembered the taste of him. Judging by the way Jonathan’s ears turned a deep, burning red, he was thinking about the exact same thing. "Hi," Lucy said. Her voice was barely a whisper. "Hey," Jonathan replie
The atmosphere in the small apartment remained tense, despite the cool rain outside. Jonathan seemed to realize he had pushed too far. He saw the way her lip trembled, the way her eyes searched his for a lie she couldn't find. He sighed in frustration and ran a hand through his damp hair."I’m goin
The ride ended in a narrow alleyway behind a row of old brick buildings. Jonathan put off the engine. "We’re here," he said, his voice raspy.Lucy came down with shaky legs, her knees nearly buckling. Jonathan caught her by the elbow, steadying her as he led her toward a heavy steel door. He fumbl
Lucy barely felt the cold morning air, as Adrian dragged her to the administrative courtyard. His grip on her upper arm was extremely tight, his fingers digging into the soft skin just above where her bruise was starting to turn yellow. Zoe followed a few paces behind, pretending to be worried. "A
The ride home from the Matthews estate was quiet. Adrian was already tipsy from drinking too much wine. He kept his hand on Lucy’s thigh, his thumb stroking the red silk of the dress Zoe had picked out. Lucy sat still staring out at the blurred streetlights, feeling the cold night air from the wind
