(Reid’s POV)

The moment I stepped into the office, I could sense something was wrong.

It wasn’t the air, it was her.

Karline was sitting at her desk, not even glancing up as I entered. Her posture was rigid, shoulders slumped slightly forward, eyes hollow and glued to her laptop screen.

Her lips were dry, her hair loosely tied,.she looked nothing like the woman I saw at the ball.

No “Good morning.”

No acknowledgment.

Just silence.

I walked to my chair and sat down, deliberately letting the sound of it echo across the room.

She didn’t even flinch.

I leaned back, eyes narrowing.

Something about her stillness irritated me more than it should have.

“Karline?”

Her name left my mouth sharper than I intended.

Slowly, she looked up.

Her eyes met mine, dull, lifeless, like something had been drained out of her.

I frowned. “You look like hell.”

She didn’t respond. Just stood, grabbed a file from the table, and walked toward me.

The faint click of her heels was the only sound between us.

  • Rejected by my Husband    Chapter 58

THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW The soft morning sun hung lazily over the city, spreading a faint golden hue across the glass walls of Carter Enterprises. The sharp click of heels echoed down the polished marble floor as employees rushed to complete their final tasks before the boss’s departure. Reid Carter was standing near the front entrance, buttoning his dark navy blazer with the same effortless confidence he carried into every boardroom. His black car gleamed at the curb, engine already humming, driver waiting. Beside him stood Karline Russo, calm on the outside, chaos within. She was holding a brown folder close to her chest, her lips pressed in a thin line. Her red eyes from sleepless nights were slightly masked with makeup, but the dullness beneath remained visible to anyone observant enough. Reid, as always, noticed, though he never said it aloud. “Do you have the documents for the contract, Ms. Russo?” he asked without looking at her, his tone steady and distant.

The next morning, the office was unusually quiet. The hum of computers and the faint clack of keyboards filled the space like a dull rhythm.Reid sat in his glass-walled office, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, eyes scanning a stack of documents — but his mind wasn’t really there. The sharp business air that usually surrounded him was still intact, but something had shifted. He didn’t understand it himself — the way his thoughts kept drifting back to her.To Karline. She’d been acting strange lately. Pale. Tired. As if she hadn’t slept in days.Every time he saw her pass by his office, he noticed the dark circles beneath her eyes, the way she walked slower, quieter. It was unlike her.The Karline he knew was always stubborn — fire behind her eyes, venom in her words whenever she spoke to him. Now, it was as if that fire had been snuffed out completely. He pushed the thought aside and exhaled sharply. This wasn’t his business anymore. He pressed the intercom button.“Ask Ms. Russo to

  • Rejected by my Husband    Chapter 56

Third Person POV The fluorescent lights in the hospital hallway flickered faintly above Karline’s head. She had been sitting outside the doctor’s office for almost half an hour, her fingers twisting the edge of her shawl, her eyes red and hollow from too many sleepless nights. When the nurse finally called her in, Karline stood slowly, her legs heavy, and stepped inside. Dr. Benetti looked up from the papers on his desk, his face gentle yet grave. “Ms. Russo… please, have a seat.” Her heart began to race. She could read the weight in his tone before he even spoke. “Doctor, please… just tell me he’ll be fine, right?” she asked, her voice trembling as she clutched her purse against her chest. The doctor sighed softly, taking off his glasses and folding them carefully on the table. “Ethan’s condition… it’s delicate,” he began, choosing his words slowly. “The infection has weakened his immunity far more than expected. We’ll need to start advanced treatment as soon as pos

KARLINE’S POINT OF VIEW It had been two days since the doctor’s words shattered every bit of calm left in my heart. “One week, Ms. Russo,” she had said. One week to start the treatment… or it’ll be too late. Those words echoed in my mind every waking hour — and even in the moments when I closed my eyes, they haunted me like whispers in the dark. *** The first thing I did was sell my car. It wasn’t much, just a small silver sedan, second-hand, already worn out, but it was mine. My freedom. My only luxury after years of trying to rebuild my life. The dealer looked at me and said, “€3,200. That’s all I can give.” I forced a smile. “I’ll take it.” When he handed me the cash, I almost laughed. Not out of joy, but out of helplessness. Because that money, that little sum, was not even one-tenth of what Ethan’s treatment would need. But I still took it. Because it was something. *** The next morning, I woke up before dawn. The car keys were gone. So was t

KARLINE'S POINT OF VIEW CAFETERIA It was around 1:40 p.m. when I finally found a moment to breathe. I hadn’t eaten properly in two days, but I still forced myself to swallow a few bites of the cold sandwich sitting on my tray in the company cafeteria. The cafeteria buzzed faintly with chatter — laughter from a few tables away, the hum of coffee machines, the dull rhythm of spoons against ceramic cups. But none of it reached me. I was staring blankly at my food when my phone suddenly started ringing. We're only allowed to use our phones at lunch time. The sound made my heart jump. I looked down, Mamma. Something in me froze. Her name on the screen at this hour never meant good news. I answered quickly. “Mamma?” Her voice came out trembling, breaking between words. “Kar...Karline! Come fast… please, come fast..Ethan’s not good!” My heart dropped into my stomach. “What? What happened?! Tell me, what’s wrong?” “He’s..he’s not breathing properly, he’s bur

KARLINE POINT OF VIEW 2 WEEKS LATER. I woke up to the same sterile white walls, the same smell of medicine and disinfectant that had already started to crawl under my skin. Ethan was still asleep, his small hand wrapped weakly around my finger. His skin felt warm… too warm. I sat there for a long moment, just staring at his face — his long lashes, the soft rise and fall of his chest. How could something so small be fighting something so cruel? I brushed my thumb over his cheek. “Mamma will be back soon, baby,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “You just rest, okay? We’ll go to the park again… like before.” But there was no response. Just the rhythmic sound of the heart monitor. So I leaned down, kissed his forehead, and forced myself to leave. The outside world felt wrong. Too normal. Too bright. By the time I reached the office, my body was there, but my soul wasn’t. Everything felt like a fog. I could hear people talking, laughing faintly in the distance, typing aw
