It was her father's voice. Nyra stared at the broken floor.

"Dad?"

Nothing replied. Kael caught her arm before she could move forward.

"Don't."

She turned on him.

"You said that was his voice."

"I said I recognized it. That's not the same thing."

"No. Then let me go."

Kael didn't. Nyra looked down at his hand.

"Kael."

He released her. Ryker walked closer to the opening.

"Darian?"

The darkness below consumed the name. The prison

The photo lay in the centre of the car seat. Nyra had stared at it so much during the car ride that she knew every detail. The small bed, the stained wall and the man sat with his head down. Her father. There was no date, address or any clue as to who had taken the photo, but she recognised the scar along Darian's jaw and the silver line on his sleeve. He was alive. That was all she knew. But it was enough to make her hands shake."How long ago was this taken?""We don't know," Kael replied, keeping his eyes on the road."It doesn't look old.""They could have given him new clothes.""What about the room?""I've never seen it." Nyra picked up the photo. "Someone sent this to try and stop us looking for him, why would they do that?""Maybe they don't want us looking in the wrong place.""Or they want us to think he's alive." Kael glanced at her."It could be." She hated that she was making sense. Th

"Give it to me, son." Kael looked down the corridor. Although the voice was older and more gravelly than he remembered, the pause before saying 'son' was exactly the same. This was how his father always talked when he wanted Kael to do something without question. He instantly remembered being seventeen, standing in the courtyard outside Westbridge as the smoke filled the upper levels. He remembered waiting for his dad to return home. He remembered asking his mum where the search parties were and she refused to answer. But above all, he remembered the funeral."Kael,” Nyra whispered. He didn't respond. The voice came again.“You've kept me waiting long enough.” Edmund dragged his chained leg across the floor making the metal clatter. He flinched as if expecting to be hit.“Don't answer it,” Kael gripped his weapon tighter. "You said my dad was following a voice that night. What voice?" Edmund s

The handle screeched and stopped half way. Kael raised his weapon."Stand back." The man inside chuckled. "Still taking charge. Just like your father." Kael's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?""You should know.""I want to hear you say it.""Edmund Hale." Nyra shared a look with Kael. The council archivist. The man whose name had been on the night shift list 11 years ago but had been erased from the official story of the fire."You should have been on holiday." There was silence."That's what they wanted people to think.""Who?""The survivors." Kael walked over to the door. "You said my father left you to burn. What do you mean?""Open the door.""I want to know what you mean." There was the sound of something heavy hitting hard against something e. A heavy thud came from inside the room."I'm not going to spend another eleven years talking through a door while someone else decides what you d

"If Garrick is alive, Nyra, he isn't the only one who survived the fire." Kael's words echoed in the hallway long after he had finished speaking. Nyra looked at him, waiting. When he didn't explain, she folded the tiny scrap of paper with the number seventeen on it and tucked it into her pocket."Who else survived?""I don't know.""You said it like you did.""Because my father wasn't the only one to disappear that night.""And the other one was?" Kael's gaze flicked toward Ryker. Nyra followed his eyes. "Don't look at him. I'm asking you.""Someone not officially associated with the records office.""Name.""Edmund Hale." Ryker's expression changed and Nyra turned to him. "You know him?""I knew the name. He was a council archivist prior to resigning. He was responsible for old pack records, property transfers, birth notices...and the sealed family dossiers.""He was in the building when it burned?""He was supposed to be.""Supposed to be?"

Nyra was already moving toward the sitting room when she said, "There's something else we need to see.""What?" Ryker asked."The letter my father left in the underground room. The one that mentioned the northern window.""Why?""Because he knew someone would come looking," Nyra said. "He left us a map to the house, and now we have a badge from the building that burned down eleven years ago. If he knew about Westbridge, he probably left us something else." Ryker frowned. "The letter is in the basement.“"Then we'll get it."”No," Kael said. "Not tonight." Nyra turned to him. "Why not?""Because we've had two voices calling from outside, someone has been inside the passage, and the thing that wore Mara's face knew how to get in. We're not going back down there until we've made sure every entrance is secure.""While we're busy checking doors," Ryker said, "whatever it is can take another look at those windows." Nyra hesitated. She k

"Kael. Open the door." Nyra knew that voice. She had heard it beneath the northern house, coming from the back of the carved door with her family name etched into its surface. She had also heard it in the passage, where the darkness seemed to carry her father's words from one end of the stone corridor to the other. This was different. It was clearer, closer. And there was the same impatient tone she remembered from childhood, the one Darian Vale used when he found her in places she wasn't supposed to be For one breathtaking moment, Nyra forgot the warnings Kael had made about the voices. She took a step toward the door. Kael gripped her shoulder."It's not him.""Who's to say?""I do.""Then prove it." Kael's jaw tightened, but he didn't answer. The voice beyond the door spoke again, closer this time"Kael... Nyra, sweetheart. Open the door." Her heart twisted. Her father had used that pet name when she was little, w
