Nyra stood frozen, trying to withstand Kael's glare while ignoring the growing anxiety in her gut. The tension between them was a thick, palpable thing. Kael offered her a deal, then fell quiet. She couldn't decide if the silence was worse than the offer itself. Nyra averted her gaze, focusing on the ground.

“I am not interested,” she finally said. She was impressed by how level her voice was. She had imagined that her rejection would feel more substantial, but it felt emptier.

Kael did not respond, not a blink, just an unhurried step forward.

“You will be," he said.

Nyra felt her lungs freeze. Kael had a dispassionate tone, but his words were gratingly certain, and maddeningly infuriating. She felt her resolve slip away. She quickly took a step back, and the frigid night air contrasted painfully with the heat in her chest.

“You know nothing about me. You’re assuming a lot.”

Kael kept his cool gaze locked on her.

“I know enough. Ryker made sure you’ve got nothing left to lose," Kael said.

His words were painfully, infuriatingly true. But that didn’t mean she was too weak to turn down his proposal.

“I don’t need a man to solve my problems,” she answered icily. “Least of all, you.”

Kael smiled, and this time it was neither a polite nor a restrained smile. It was something else, something that made her feel his smile was too personal.

“You believe I came to ‘solve’ your problems? Think again.”

                  She raised an eyebrow.

“Then what is it?”

“It is about control,” he said, his smile now possessor. “I’m giving you the opportunity to regain control of your life and to stop being a player in someone else’s game.”

The word control made her pulse race. It was the only thing that she was trying to regain after everything she had lost. Ryker had taken that control away from her. She was leaning more and more to the side of accepting Kael’s proposition, which appeared to have no strings attached.

“I don’t need you to regain control,” she said, and this time her voice was a little more resolute.

Kael tilted his head, observing her too calmly.

“You can’t. Not without a push. And you don’t have the time, Nyra. Ryker will be back, and when he does, you will remember your place.”

Ryker’s name made her blood boil. Kael was right, though she hated to admit it. Still, she wouldn’t be anyone’s pawn.

“Why me?” she asked him.

“What makes you think it’s you that I need?” Kael stepped forward one more time. “I see potential in you. You have an option to walk away. I’m offering you an opportunity. It’s your choice to walk away and end everything you have worked toward.”

Nyra had to swallow as the opportunity had the same cold hard truth. He was right; if she walked away, she would have nothing but a life of running and looking over her shoulder. The room was closing in on her decision, but her pride kept her standing tall.

“I don’t need to be owned,” She blurted.

Kael’s expression grew more serious, but empty of anger, more like understanding.

“I wouldn’t ask you to be owned. I would never even think to have such control over you. What I am offering you is a partnership. You need power, and I can offer you that.”

She took a slow breath; each second of it was a battle to control herself from the impulse to scream at him and tell him to back off, the rational side of her that was telling her to listen that was so tired and so desperate for something more that it was keeping her engaged.

“You’re offering me a fake marriage over a contract. Is this for real? What’s the catch?” she said, almost at the end of her rope.

                      Kael stepped closer to her.

"The catch? You get everything you want—revenge, power, freedom. But I claim you."

Nyra's heart skipped a beat when he finished talking. She swallowed hard as she fought down the fear rising inside her.

"I don't need a man to get what I want," she said, doubt creeping into her tone. Kael stepped back, watching her with dark eyes seeing past every mask she wore.

"You'll find you do. And when you say yes... leaving becomes impossible."

His last words hung in air between them sharp as wire. Nyra stayed silent, staring at him. His words, his presence, felt like a net closing tight. She hadn't agreed to anything; didn't even trust him; yet deep down, something shifted. "Think about it," Kael said softly, almost pleading. "This isn't just an offer. You get to pick how to play."

She wanted to shove him off but his steady, unchanging gaze made her pause.

"I'll think on it," Nyra said, sounding colder than she felt. Kael nodded slowly, then turned away from view.

"Don't take too long to make your mind," he said aloud. "Ryker isn't waiting forever"

He walked away and silence came back around her again. Nyra stood still there, her heart pounding strong inside her body. She could feel the weight of the deci

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER FIVE

Nyra moved around her tiny apartment, the silence crushing down on her with the same oppressive weight she had experienced while Ryker was there. Her mind continued to hear his words, always reminding her that the road she was on was not as pure or easy as it first looked. "Should he shut you out, don't come crawling back to the pack house." Long after Ryker departed, the words had haunted her, hanging in the air like smoke. She could still sense his warmth, the way his rage had seeped into the space and threatened to burn everything in its path. She was through with him, nevertheless. Completed with the pack. Through with serving another person's game. She had made up her mind. She simply questioned whether it was the correct one. A quiet knock at the door broke her thinking. Before she even had time to process it, her heart skipped in her chest. Before she even opened the door, she knew who it was.

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER FOUR

Three weeks Nyra had been listening to the pipes in Kael's house's west wing rattle, waiting for the other shoe to fall. Kael had not troubled her. Actually, she only saw him at breakfast, when he mostly read legal documents on his tablet and sipped black coffee without looking at her. It felt like a strange, quiet business residency, not a great, gloomy love story. But the peace was a lie, and they both knew it. Ryker was not one to let a past partner simply enter a competitor's property without causing a disturbance. The scene began on a Tuesday evening just as a violent thunderstorm was knocking the lights off. The knock on her ground-floor balcony door wasn't a soft touch. The glass pane trembled from a strong, steady thump. Nyra let her book fall on the bed, her throat drying right away. Though the storm was strong enough to silence a military, Kael's security squad was meant to be monitoring the perimeter.

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER THREE

Nyra found it hard to believe what was going on. With a weight upon her back, she felt as if she was jogging across sand; the days and hours were flying by ever more quickly. She had to decide something. She couldn't keep procrastinating it. Her mind kept bringing back the image of Kael in all his towering, self-assured height, standing confidently and declaring himself to her as something which he obviously was – the center of power and control in any room he entered. She also couldn't get out of her head the offer he had given her. At night, she spent hours gazing out her window. The far-off city's lights were vibrant and strong. The air in her tiny apartment made her feel suffocated. She was still undecided on whether she should take Kael's offer. Nyra understood he would not wait for too long for her to decide, even if he was not pushing her for an response. If she didn't say yes quickly, the door to

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER ONE

“I, Alpha Ryker, reject you, Nyra Vale, as my soulmate." The rumbles of destruction never came. This was the unwinding of a great monster. A thread by thread destruction. Reality became blurry and everything became quiet. The air was slowly disappearing, and for a moment it seemed like the room was entangled in this time-stopping silence. The world returned, but not the same. A sleeve brushed against the chair. Or maybe it was the chair rubbing against its leg. A hesitant hand was out. Like the release of a brake, it began. Rapid, but quiet. Nyra remained still, the world moving around her. She wished the ceiling wasn't so bright. She wished everything wasn't on the light, but instead focused on her. She felt like she was put on display. In the dimmed lights, the judging eyes began to haunt her. The lights touched her the most, giving no room for escape, for avoidance. The world was a blurred mass of moving faces, glances, a
