Lucien drove without speaking.

City lights slid across the windshield in broken lines. Aria sat with her hands loosely joined in her lap and watched the side mirror instead of the road. Behind them, the glow of the estate had already disappeared.

Her pulse had not settled.

She could still see Kael standing in the entrance. The way the room adjusted around him. Serena’s hand resting near his arm. The small delay when Serena tried to steer his attention and he did not follow at once.

The gallery held its quiet like a held breath. Kael stood beneath the winter coastline painting with the same easy balance Aria remembered from another life. Up close, the years between that riverbank and this polished floor compressed into nothing. The golden eyes were the same. The measured stillness was the same. Only the context had changed — and the fact that she was no longer on her knees. Lucien remained half a step behind her left shoulder. Present. Unmoving. Kael’s gaze flicked to him once, cataloguing, then returned to Aria. “You left the gathering before we could be introduced,” he said. “That was deliberate.” “Yes.” “Why?” Aria kept her hands relaxed at her sides. “Because I decide when conversations begin.” Something faint moved at the corner of Kael’s mouth. Not a smile. Recognition of a boundary. “Dominic Vale’s daughter,” he said, tasting the words. “I was told he didn’t have one who appeared in rooms like that.” “He does now.” “And she arrives with Lucien

Morning light found Aria already dressed. She had slept in fragments, waking each time the house shifted or a patrol passed beneath her window. The black card sat under the comb beside the blade. Address. Time. No name. She had memorized both before dawn and still checked the card twice, as if the ink might rearrange itself into a clearer warning. Dominic’s lockdown held. The corridors felt narrower. Even the air in the training level seemed claimed. Silas worked her until her arms shook. He corrected footwork with the same flat precision as always, but his eyes tracked her longer between sequences. At the end of the session he tossed her a water bottle and spoke quietly enough that the words stayed between them. “You’re planning something.” Aria drank, wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist, and met his gaze. “I’m following the rules.” “That’s not what I said.” She capped the bottle and set it down. Silas exhaled through his nose. “Whatever you’re carrying, weigh it ag

Aria did not sleep. She sat on the edge of the bed with the blade across her knees and watched the clock on the desk carve the night into smaller pieces. Each minute rearranged the same question without answering it. Stay inside Dominic’s structure and let him control the answer Kael received. Or walk to the east service door and take the risk that the anonymous voice was offering a different kind of control. Neither option was clean. Both would cost her something. At 1:40 she moved. Dark clothes. Soft-soled shoes. The blade strapped where her hand could find it without thought. She left the plastic comb on the desk like a marker that she intended to return, even if the night had other plans. The hallway outside her room was dim and empty. Patrol patterns had tightened since morning, but the east wing still held a narrow window between passes — three minutes, sometimes four, if the men on duty kept to the schedule Silas had drilled into them. Aria timed the first turn, then t

By noon the estate had changed temperature. Extra men walked the inner paths. The side gate that staff sometimes used for quick errands stayed locked. Even the usual delivery truck was stopped, searched, and waved through under watch. Aria felt the difference in the way doors shut — firmer, final, as if the house itself had decided to hold its breath. She was not asked to stay in her room. She was simply never left without a line of sight to someone loyal to Dominic. Training began early and ended late. Silas did not mention Kael. He did not mention the message. He only increased the speed of every drill until Aria’s lungs burned and her reactions shortened to pure necessity. When she misjudged distance, he made her repeat the sequence until the correction sat in her muscles. Between rounds she stood with her hands on her knees and tasted copper. “Again,” Silas said. She straightened and stepped back onto the mat. In the old life she would have asked how long the lockdown wou

Aria read the two lines until the handwriting stopped looking like language and became only shape. He saw you. She made sure of it. The paper was thin. Ordinary. The kind of scrap that could have come from any desk in the city. She turned it over. Blank. No mark, no crest, no lingering scent worth trusting. She set it down beside the comb and the blade and pressed her thumb hard into the opposite palm until the small pain steadied her breathing. Silas arrived twenty minutes later with coffee she had not asked for. He took in the open envelope, the strip of paper, and her face in one pass. “Another one.” “Yes.” He picked it up by the edge, read it, and put it back exactly where it had been. “I’ll take it to Mr. Vale.” “Not yet.” Silas’s eyes lifted. Aria kept her voice level. “If Kael saw me, the next move is already in motion. I need an hour to think before this house starts closing doors.” Silas studied her. Then he gave a single, short nod. “One hour. After that the p

Sleep did not come. Aria sat at the desk with the lamp on and wrote the report Dominic had demanded. Faces. Timing. The order in which people had approached Serena. The moment Kael entered. The exact words Serena had used when she asked if they had met before. She kept the language clean and left the riverbank out of every line. When she finished, the page looked almost ordinary. She folded it once, set it aside, and flexed her writing hand until the stiffness eased. A soft knock came just after two. Aria opened the door to find Lucien standing in the hallway, jacket gone, sleeves pushed back. He looked like a man who had also been kept awake by conversation. “He finished with me,” Lucien said. “Your turn left marks.” “He already knew about Kael.” “I told him.” Lucien’s voice stayed low. “Better coming from me than from someone else in that room.” Aria stepped aside. He entered but only far enough for the door to close. The room felt smaller with him in it. “What did he say
