CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY ONE

“D-Damien,” I clutch on to his clothes, not even caring that I’m acting like a little scaredy cat right now. “Are you seeing that?”

“Stay behind me,” he orders.

“I mean you no harm,” the girl smiles. “In fact, you’re the first ones who offered to give me food. That never happens. The usual reaction is running away and screaming. Or, just walking away, leaving a helpless little child to survive all by her lonesome.”

“There’s nothing helpless about you,” Damien growls. “I did wonder why your clothes didn’t have so much as a scratch on them. Something about you didn’t make any sense. A child in the forest and not a word in town. That old man would have mentioned something. He barely shut up long enough to breathe.:

The girl looks down at the nightgown and her voice is full of amusement, “Ah. I should work on this next time.” Looking up, she glances at me, “I do mean what I said. I mean you no harm, Righ. You can stop hiding behind your mate.”

“I’m – I’m not hiding.”
