Serena

I heard the knock before I saw him.

Three slow, deliberate taps.

Not like a neighbor. Not like a stranger.

Like someone who had every intention of being let in.

I glanced at Ma. Her hands froze mid-cut above a tomato. Her expression said it all.

It was him.

I opened the door slowly, heart pounding, hand tight on the knob.

And there he was.

Kael.

Tall. Dark. Eyes colder than I remembered.

But when he saw me, something in his face softened—just for a second.

He stepped back slightly, giving me space.

“Serena,” he said, voice low. Rough.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I had to come.”

I stepped outside and shut the door behind me, blocking the view of the apartment.

“You tracked us?”

“I asked around,” he said. “Quietly. I didn’t want to scare you. I just needed to know you were safe after what happened.”

My jaw tightened. “We were safe until they came for him.”

“I know,” he said, his face tense. “I heard. I should’ve been there.”

I crossed my

Serena It started with laughter. Not mine. Ari’s. The sound of it echoed through the east courtyard like a song. It was bright, sharp, wild—the kind of laughter that didn’t belong inside a cold estate like this. It pulled me from the window. I stepped out onto the stone balcony and looked down toward the stables. And there they were. Kael and Ari. My son sat on a small dark bay horse, reins held in one tiny fist, the other clutching Kael’s sleeve as the Alpha led the animal in slow, careful circles. Ari was beaming, legs too short to reach the stirrups, his laughter ricocheting off the walls like magic. Kael said something, and Ari shouted, “Again!” And Kael—Kael laughed. Not a smirk. Not a scoff. A real laugh. I hadn’t heard it in years. It didn’t sound royal. Or proud. Or guarded. It sounded human. I leaned against the rail, arms crossed, heart tangled. I’d told myself I would keep my distance. That I’d never fall for this again. But it was

  • Rejected for being human    Chapter 21: Back

Serena It didn’t take long for the whispers to start. They floated through the halls like perfume. Sweet to some, bitter to others. Most didn’t say them directly to me, but I heard them just the same. “Did you see her walking past the garden? Not even wearing a uniform…” “She’s living in the eastern suite. Alone. No Luna seal on her door.” “I heard the Alpha visits the boy every night.” “She used to mop these floors.” “She used to bow.” Now, I held my head high. Not out of pride, but necessity. If I let them see the weight I carried, they’d pounce. And I wasn’t here to be devoured. The Moonclaw mansion hadn’t changed much. The halls were still spotless. The walls still held the same grand portraits of Kael’s ancestors, the kind with stern eyes and bloody legacies. The omegas still scrubbed and folded and served like shadows. And the Luna still swept through the halls with perfume and poison clinging to her heels. But I had changed. T

Serena They say when you return to the place that broke you, your breath catches in your throat like you’re swallowing the past. They’re right. When the gates of the Moonclaw estate opened, the memories didn’t just trickle in. They flooded. Not in words. Not in images. In feeling. The coldness of the marble floors beneath my bare feet. The sting of whispers behind my back. The thick, choked silence in my throat the night I realized Kael wasn’t going to fight for me. All of it came rushing back the moment the SUV rolled through those gates. But this time… I didn’t bow my head. I held it high. My son’s fingers wrapped around mine. My mother sat silently beside me, back straight like a sword. And Kael? Kael didn’t look at me like he used to. Not like I was invisible. Not like I was a problem he couldn’t name. He looked like a man finally willing to carry the weight of what he’d broken. Still. I didn’t relax.

Serena Two days later, the sun was too bright, the sky too blue like the world was mocking me. Ari was playing in the small patch of grass behind our building. It wasn’t much just a fenced yard, worn with patches of dirt and weeds—but he loved it. I could hear his laughter through the open kitchen window as I washed dishes. His giggles rose and fell like music, chasing the wind. Ma sat at the table, slicing fruit, eyes flicking toward the window every few seconds. She never trusted the quiet. Neither did I. But I let him play. I needed to let him play. He deserved at least one piece of childhood untouched. Until I realized the laughter had stopped. I froze, dish in hand. Water running. No more giggles. Just… silence. Then the wind blew, and I heard it—something faint. A thump. Then nothing. I dropped the plate. It shattered on the floor. Ma stood instantly. I was already at the door. “Ari?” I called, stepping into the yard. “Baby?” No answer. I ra

  • Rejected for being human    Chapter 17

Serena The ride home was quiet. Ari slept with his head on my lap, soft breaths fogging the quilt pulled over his face. The roads blurred past the windows, wet with last night’s rain. Forests. Empty fields. A world moving on like nothing had happened. But everything had. Kael had claimed his son. Mirah had watched it. And the Elders—they knew now. It was only a matter of time. The moment we reached the edge of town, my heart began to settle. Not because I felt safe, but because I knew this place. These streets. The cracked sidewalk outside the bakery. The rusted mailbox with its crooked lid. The people who waved even when they didn’t know your name. This wasn’t just where I hid after being thrown away. This was where I rebuilt. Where I became something stronger. Our building came into view. Third floor. One window cracked open. A flowerpot still hanging from the balcony railing, wilted but alive. Home. Not perfect. Not protected. But ours. The driver
