Chapter 3

Author: Geese
The stone floor of the dungeon felt like ice, but my heart was colder. My stomach hurt like it was being torn apart by knives. Axel's kick had been brutal.

I curled up, trying to protect the pup that might already be gone.

In the darkness, there was only the sound of dripping water. It reminded me of that snowy night ten years ago.

Before that night, I was the daughter of the Moonshadow pack's Alpha. After that night, the pack was destroyed, and I was the only one left.

I crawled out from under a pile of bodies and found Axel. For some reason, he was barely alive too. He was covered in blood with his chest torn open.

Maybe it was because we were both on the brink of death, but I used my frozen hands to dig him out bit by bit. I carried him on my back across the wilderness, running from those who hunted us. I chewed herbs and fed them to him, and I used my body to keep him warm.

When he woke up, he only said one thing. "From now on, my life is yours."

Later, he became the Alpha of the Shadowcrest pack. The elders opposed me because of my background, calling me 'the cursed survivor of a dead pack'. They thought I was bad luck.

However, Axel shifted into his wolf form and stood in front of me. "If you want to hurt her, you'll have to go through me first."

For ten years, he gave me everything he could. Even a month ago, when Vanessa, that damned fated mate, showed up, he did not push me away.

That night, he held my trembling body and kissed my forehead over and over.

"Seraphina, don't be afraid. That bond is just a physical reaction, something the Moon Goddess forced on us. You saved me. My heart belongs only to you."

This past month, he lived like a monk. Vanessa moved into the pack, but he told me where he was every single day.

"Vanessa brought me soup today. I had someone throw it out."

"The elders tried to make me see her. I refused."

He even took suppressants to fight the instinct that made his heart race around his fated mate, all for me. He did everything right, so much so that I truly believed we could beat destiny. Now, however...

The man who had sworn he would fight fate destroyed our ten years with his own hands over some fake photos and a misunderstanding. He even killed our pup.

Tears fell silently.

If he knew the truth, would he regret it?

A bucket of salt water hit me, and I screamed in agony.

Vanessa stood outside the cell holding the empty bucket, grinning. Where was that fragile act from earlier?

"Still alive?" She looked thrilled.

"Vanessa..." I gritted my teeth.

"Those photos... That Rogue... And the recent intelligence leak... It was all you, wasn't it? Why would you do this to me?"

"Do this to you?" Vanessa laughed softly. She dismissed the guards, opened the cell door, and walked in. "If Axel didn't love you so much, I wouldn't have bothered competing with a lowlife wolf like you."

She crouched down and patted my filthy face with her perfectly manicured hand.

"For an entire month, he wouldn't even touch me, his fated mate. And he was secretly preparing a Luna ceremony for you! Why should you get that?"

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my chin hard. "I'm the fated mate the Moon Goddess gave him! Since he was willing to throw me away for you, I decided to ruin you. I decided to make you dirty and disgusting. I'd drag you through the mud until he saw you as nothing but a cheater!

"That way, he'd have no choice but to pick me."

"You..." My whole body shook with rage. "Just for that... you had a Rogue attack me?"

The vile memories flooded back. The shame, the helplessness… Combined with the despair of losing my pup, it made me snap. I lunged at her and wrapped my hands around her throat.

"You evil witch... Give me back my innocence! Give me back my pup! I'll kill you!"

However, Vanessa did not struggle. Instead, she smiled strangely. She mouthed silently, "You fell for it."

The next second, she pulled out a knife she had prepared and stabbed herself in the shoulder. She quickly shoved the knife into my hand, then screamed.

"Seraphina, don't kill me! Help!"

The cell door burst open.

Axel stood in the doorway, his eyes bloodshot. With him was Vanessa's uncle, Leon Graystone. He was also an elder of the pack.

What they saw was Vanessa covered in blood on the ground, a knife in her shoulder. There was also me, with my hands soaked in blood. It looked like I was about to stab her again.

"By the goddess!" Elder Graystone shouted. "Axel! How long are you going to protect this lunatic?"

He turned and stared at Axel, enunciating every word, "She leaked classified information and conspired with enemies. Now, she's trying to murder the future Luna! Alpha! For the sake of the pack, this menace must be executed!"

Ten years passed. For long-lived werewolves, it was the blink of an eye. For Axel, it was 3,650 days and nights of burning in hell.Under Axel's rule, the Shadowcrest pack swallowed every neighboring pack and became the sole power across the wasteland. No one dared speak the name 'Seraphina'. No one dared to approach the tattered tent at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, where snow and wind never ceased. It was forbidden ground, the den of the mad wolf Axel....This day brought the worst blizzard of the season. It was also the date carved into Axel's bones. It was his birthday and the anniversary of Seraphina's death. An old courier knelt trembling outside the tent."Alpha... This is a package a lady left with us ten years ago. She paid ten times the normal fee and specified it be delivered to you today."Axel emerged from the tent. Ten years of weathering had streaked his temples with white, but his eyes remained as lifeless as they had been a decade ago.He took the package

The blizzard stopped.Axel returned from the Forbidden Forest without Seraphina's body, but death clung to him like a shroud. When he pushed open the council hall doors, the overwhelming smell of blood made every elder tremble."Axel..." Vanessa's wrists were wrapped in thick bandages. She was still kneeling on the ground, trying to play on his emotions. "You came back... I'm in so much pain… I'm your fated mate. For the sake of the Moon Goddess, please forgive me this once...""Fated mate?" Axel walked up to her, his eyes as empty as dried wells. "I don't want it anymore."He raised his hand, gathered his power, and plunged it into his own chest. With brutal force, he ripped out the glowing golden bond thread.Vanessa's agonized screams tore through the hall as she writhed on the ground. Axel was in pain too, but he did not so much as flinch."Break."The golden thread snapped in his hand and scattered into particles of light."From today onward, the Shadowcrest pack has no

The blizzard cut across his face like knives, but Axel felt no pain. He tore through the snow and rushed toward the Forbidden Forest like a madman."Seraphina!"The wind scattered his shouts into nothing.Drag marks were seen on the ground. Though snow covered them, the blood trail stood out like a red serpent, stretching all the way to the cliff's edge. That was his Seraphina, drained of blood and dragged here like garbage.Axel collapsed to his knees at the cliff's edge. Below stretched a bottomless dark pit, filled only with wind that sounded like wailing ghosts."No... No..."He reached out, trying to grab the figure that had fallen, but there was nothing—only cold snow.Suddenly, the wind carried a filthy scrap of cloth. It caught on a dead branch at the cliff's edge.Axel's pupils constricted. He crawled over while trembling. Ignoring the thorns that tore his hands, he grabbed it.A handkerchief. Though caked with mud and frozen blood, he recognized it instantly. It was

"Then do it! Kill me!" Vanessa tilted her neck back and screamed, putting on the act of a martyr. "Without your trust, what's the point of being your fated mate? I might as well die!"She cried pitifully, but her body shook violently. She was betting on Axel's instinctive need to protect his fated mate. This time, she lost the bet."Fine." Axel's eyes were dead as he grabbed the knife from the table. "Since you want to die, I'll grant your wish.""No... Axel..." The defiance in Vanessa's eyes turned to fear.He seized her wrist with one large hand. The next second, blood sprayed out, splattering across his clothes like blooming flowers. Her scream echoed through the room. Vanessa stared at her blood-soaked hand and nearly fainted from terror. The martyr act vanished completely."Does it hurt?" Axel's voice was as cold as ice. "When they drained Seraphina dry, it hurt ten thousand times worse than this."He released her and let her writhe in her own blood."Guards. Watch her. E

When he reached the healer's quarters, Axel grabbed the head healer by the collar."Tell me how a she-wolf who just miscarried, broke her ribs, and had 800 milliliters of blood drained managed to knock out guards and escape!"The head healer trembled. "She... She pulled out the needle after the blood draw and jumped out the window..."A young healer nearby said quietly, "Didn't she knock people out before running?"The stories did not match.Just then, Leon rushed over, wiping sweat from his brow as he explained, "Alpha, it was so chaotic at the time. We must have gotten confused… Besides, I suspect she had an accomplice! It must have been that Rogue! He snuck in and rescued her during the chaos!""Right! She definitely had help! Otherwise, she couldn't have escaped!" The other healers quickly agreed.Axel said nothing. He touched the notebook in his coat. It was still warm against his chest. He might have trusted the wrong ones before—and paid the price for it. From now on, he

Axel closed the diary, his chest unbearably tight."You really were good to me back then." He spoke hoarsely to the empty air. "But that doesn't change the fact that you betrayed me. Seraphina... If he was going to investigate, he would do it thoroughly.…Seraphina's room was in the most remote corner tower of the estate. It was small and cold.
