Chapter 1

Author: Geese
First-Person POV:

"Seraphina, it's been ten years." Axel Ravenscar's voice cut cold across the birthday celebration. "I gave you everything. I opened my heart to you and gave you a home, yet how did you repay me?"

He pointed at Vanessa Nightshade beside him, his hand trembling. "Just because I found my fated mate, you went and threw yourself at some Rogue on my birthday? You make me sick!"

"No! Axel!" I crawled toward him through my tears.

"I was set up! I opened my eyes and I was already there... Please, you have to believe me..."

"Believe you?" His eyes were bloodshot, but he laughed bitterly. He threw a stack of photos in my face.

The photos showed 'me' in the woods and in the stables, tangled up with different male wolves.

"No... These are fake... They were edited! Axel! I've never even been to these places!"

"Fake?" Axel descended the stairs step by step, closing in on me.

"When that intelligence leak got six of my best friends killed, the investigation pointed to you. You said the evidence was fake, and I believed you. Then, someone said you were meeting with outsiders. You called it a misunderstanding, and I believed that too!

"But just now, I walked into that lounge and saw you underneath that piece of garbage with my own eyes. Was that fake too? Do I need to catch you cheating a thousand more times before you'll finally admit what you are?"

"It's not true... None of it is true... I've loved you for ten years! I've never done anything to hurt you..." I threw caution to the wind and clung desperately to his legs.

"Love?" Axel let out a bitter laugh, like I had just told the world's funniest joke.

He pulled out the Luna crown studded with moonstones. That crown was the honor I had dreamed of my whole life.

I came from a decimated border pack, and Axel and I were not fated mates. For ten years, the Council of Elders constantly pressured us, but he always swore that he would put that crown on my head. He said true love could beat destiny.

Every birthday, he vowed to the Moon Goddess that in this life, he would only accept me as his Luna. However, as he stared at the crown at this moment, veins bulged on the back of his hand.

"I stood against the council's pressure for you. I was even ready to sever my fate bond with Vanessa and give you everything! And you? What did you give me? One hell of a betrayal!"

He swung his arm sharply, and the crown landed in Vanessa's hands.

"It's yours now," he said coldly.

My heart shattered. I thought his heart shattered too, only we shattered in two different places. Our hearts could never be pieced back together.

How ridiculous. He could stand against the whole world for me, so why would he not believe me one more time? Why, when I was being humiliated and violated—when I needed him most—did he stop believing in me?

All those promises of forever were destroyed by a few fake photos.

My chest burned, and tears kept streaming down.

"She still has the nerve to cry?"

"Cheating and then playing the victim. Pathetic."

The whispers around me grew louder. I used to carry myself with dignity and pride in front of everyone, never shedding a tear. Now, it was all over.

Vanessa smugly linked her arm through Axel's. "Axel, don't be like this... Maybe she just made a mistake. She came from a small pack, after all. She's used to running wild. And you've been spending so much time with me lately. She was probably just lonely..."

She sounded like she was defending me, but really, she was painting me as trash by nature.

"You're lying!" I jerked my head up and pointed at her. "That spiked drink came from you! You wanted to destroy what Axel and I had built over ten years so that you could swoop in as his fated mate! You have no shame!

"If you love him so much, where were you ten years ago when he was buried under a pile of dead wolves?"

"Enough!" Axel pulled Vanessa into his arms protectively. "You're filthy yourself, so you want to drag everyone else down with you? What gives you the right to compare yourself to Vanessa?

"She's kind-hearted. She wouldn't even hurt a fly. And you? A feral wolf from outside the pack who could never be tamed. Your blood is tainted.

"She may have come ten years late, but she's pure. She's better than you in every way! You can't even survive without throwing yourself at the nearest wolf!"

I froze. This was how he saw me?

"Axel..." My voice came out hoarse as I tried to reach him. "Is this really what our ten years mean to you? It's worth less than the one month she's been here? Fine... since you think she's so perfect, let me see if her heart is really as pure as you think it is!"

Rage took over. I lunged forward to claw Vanessa's face, but before I could touch her, Axel kicked me hard. I slammed into a pillar and crumpled to the ground. A sharp pain tore through my stomach.

Ten years passed. For long-lived werewolves, it was the blink of an eye. For Axel, it was 3,650 days and nights of burning in hell.Under Axel's rule, the Shadowcrest pack swallowed every neighboring pack and became the sole power across the wasteland. No one dared speak the name 'Seraphina'. No one dared to approach the tattered tent at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, where snow and wind never ceased. It was forbidden ground, the den of the mad wolf Axel....This day brought the worst blizzard of the season. It was also the date carved into Axel's bones. It was his birthday and the anniversary of Seraphina's death. An old courier knelt trembling outside the tent."Alpha... This is a package a lady left with us ten years ago. She paid ten times the normal fee and specified it be delivered to you today."Axel emerged from the tent. Ten years of weathering had streaked his temples with white, but his eyes remained as lifeless as they had been a decade ago.He took the package

The blizzard stopped.Axel returned from the Forbidden Forest without Seraphina's body, but death clung to him like a shroud. When he pushed open the council hall doors, the overwhelming smell of blood made every elder tremble."Axel..." Vanessa's wrists were wrapped in thick bandages. She was still kneeling on the ground, trying to play on his emotions. "You came back... I'm in so much pain… I'm your fated mate. For the sake of the Moon Goddess, please forgive me this once...""Fated mate?" Axel walked up to her, his eyes as empty as dried wells. "I don't want it anymore."He raised his hand, gathered his power, and plunged it into his own chest. With brutal force, he ripped out the glowing golden bond thread.Vanessa's agonized screams tore through the hall as she writhed on the ground. Axel was in pain too, but he did not so much as flinch."Break."The golden thread snapped in his hand and scattered into particles of light."From today onward, the Shadowcrest pack has no

The blizzard cut across his face like knives, but Axel felt no pain. He tore through the snow and rushed toward the Forbidden Forest like a madman."Seraphina!"The wind scattered his shouts into nothing.Drag marks were seen on the ground. Though snow covered them, the blood trail stood out like a red serpent, stretching all the way to the cliff's edge. That was his Seraphina, drained of blood and dragged here like garbage.Axel collapsed to his knees at the cliff's edge. Below stretched a bottomless dark pit, filled only with wind that sounded like wailing ghosts."No... No..."He reached out, trying to grab the figure that had fallen, but there was nothing—only cold snow.Suddenly, the wind carried a filthy scrap of cloth. It caught on a dead branch at the cliff's edge.Axel's pupils constricted. He crawled over while trembling. Ignoring the thorns that tore his hands, he grabbed it.A handkerchief. Though caked with mud and frozen blood, he recognized it instantly. It was

"Then do it! Kill me!" Vanessa tilted her neck back and screamed, putting on the act of a martyr. "Without your trust, what's the point of being your fated mate? I might as well die!"She cried pitifully, but her body shook violently. She was betting on Axel's instinctive need to protect his fated mate. This time, she lost the bet."Fine." Axel's eyes were dead as he grabbed the knife from the table. "Since you want to die, I'll grant your wish.""No... Axel..." The defiance in Vanessa's eyes turned to fear.He seized her wrist with one large hand. The next second, blood sprayed out, splattering across his clothes like blooming flowers. Her scream echoed through the room. Vanessa stared at her blood-soaked hand and nearly fainted from terror. The martyr act vanished completely."Does it hurt?" Axel's voice was as cold as ice. "When they drained Seraphina dry, it hurt ten thousand times worse than this."He released her and let her writhe in her own blood."Guards. Watch her. E

When he reached the healer's quarters, Axel grabbed the head healer by the collar."Tell me how a she-wolf who just miscarried, broke her ribs, and had 800 milliliters of blood drained managed to knock out guards and escape!"The head healer trembled. "She... She pulled out the needle after the blood draw and jumped out the window..."A young healer nearby said quietly, "Didn't she knock people out before running?"The stories did not match.Just then, Leon rushed over, wiping sweat from his brow as he explained, "Alpha, it was so chaotic at the time. We must have gotten confused… Besides, I suspect she had an accomplice! It must have been that Rogue! He snuck in and rescued her during the chaos!""Right! She definitely had help! Otherwise, she couldn't have escaped!" The other healers quickly agreed.Axel said nothing. He touched the notebook in his coat. It was still warm against his chest. He might have trusted the wrong ones before—and paid the price for it. From now on, he

Axel closed the diary, his chest unbearably tight."You really were good to me back then." He spoke hoarsely to the empty air. "But that doesn't change the fact that you betrayed me. Seraphina... I need to know exactly when you changed."He shot to his feet while clutching the old diary and rushed toward Seraphina's room. If he was going to investigate, he would do it thoroughly.…Seraphina's room was in the most remote corner tower of the estate. It was small and cold. Axel rarely came here.He tore through drawers and cabinets until finally, in her bedside table, he found over a dozen old notebooks. All of them were his used account ledgers or meeting records.Axel's hands trembled. He refused to believe someone could have a change of heart without leaving a trace. If she had stopped loving him—if she had betrayed him—surely, her diary entries would show it!He flipped through them frantically.[Year Five. He had a stomachache today. I made him soup.
