Chapter 4

Author: Geese
Elder Graystone roared that I should be executed, but Axel refused.

He carried the 'unconscious' Vanessa and strode away, leaving only one cold statement behind.

"She's a serious criminal. Until I decide on the worst possible way for her to die, no one touches her. If she dies, you all die with her."

The cell door slammed shut, and darkness swallowed me whole.

He would not let me die? Was it because he could not bear to lose me, or because he wanted to squeeze every last bit of use out of me? I did not know the answer.

All I felt was the emptiness in my stomach. That tiny life was probably nothing more than a puddle of blood now.

I had no idea how much time passed before the cell door opened again. Elder Graystone rushed in with a healer, and Axel followed behind them.

"Alpha," Elder Graystone said urgently, pointing at me. "Vanessa is badly injured! The knife was poisoned, and combined with the shock she suffered, her old wounds have flared up… The healer says we must drain Seraphina's blood immediately to save Vanessa!"

I froze. This was not about taking blood. This was about taking my life. I had just miscarried and been beaten. Draining my blood now would kill me for sure. I struggled to lift my head and looked at Axel.

After a long silence, he asked quietly, "It has to be her blood?"

"Yes!" Elder Graystone's tone was firm. "She and Vanessa are both your mates. Their blood resonates. Vanessa has a special constitution. Right now, only blood with that resonance can save her!"

It was complete nonsense. If I had any strength left, I would have laughed out loud.

Elder Graystone continued, "Besides, she was the one who stabbed Vanessa. Using her blood to save the victim is only right!"

"But Alpha..." The healer beside him hesitated. "Given Seraphina's current condition, draining that much blood might—"

"Might what?" Elder Graystone cut in. "She's a murderer! Is the future Luna's life not worth more than a few vials of this criminal's blood?"

Axel exhaled a cold breath. He finally glanced at me, like he was appraising how much value I had left.

"Do it. Just keep her breathing. Don't let her die. I'm not done interrogating her yet."

The last shred of hope in my heart was crushed completely by those words, and something inside me died with it. This was why I was still alive—to serve as Vanessa's blood supply.

"Get started!" Elder Graystone ordered.

Several guards rushed forward and dragged me toward the medical room.

As I passed Axel, I used the last of my strength to turn my head, wanting to look at him one more time. I wanted to ask him something.

Would he just look at me? Look at my ruined skin, my bleeding stomach, my hands with every nail torn out… Could he really bear to see this happen to me after ten years together? Looking at me like this, did it not hurt him even a little?

Yet he did not look at me. He stood with his body turned away, frowning as he listened intently to Elder Graystone describing Vanessa's "condition".

Those eyes that used to only focus on me were now filled with worry for another she-wolf.

"Bring the medicine to my study."

He was going to personally tend to Vanessa's wounds? Who would care for my injuries, then?

My heart went completely cold. I stared one last time at his indifferent profile, wanting to carve this face that betrayed me into my soul so that I could hate him forever.

Just then, maybe on instinct, Axel suddenly stopped. He turned around reflexively, looking in the direction where they were dragging me away after they had drained my blood.

However, he was too late. I had already exhausted what little strength I had left and closed my eyes. My head fell limply.

We missed each other.

All he saw was a limp, lifeless figure and the trail of blood smeared across the floor. His heart suddenly ached.

This was the last time we would pass by each other in this life. From here on, we would be separated by death itself.

Ten years passed. For long-lived werewolves, it was the blink of an eye. For Axel, it was 3,650 days and nights of burning in hell.Under Axel's rule, the Shadowcrest pack swallowed every neighboring pack and became the sole power across the wasteland. No one dared speak the name 'Seraphina'. No one dared to approach the tattered tent at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, where snow and wind never ceased. It was forbidden ground, the den of the mad wolf Axel....This day brought the worst blizzard of the season. It was also the date carved into Axel's bones. It was his birthday and the anniversary of Seraphina's death. An old courier knelt trembling outside the tent."Alpha... This is a package a lady left with us ten years ago. She paid ten times the normal fee and specified it be delivered to you today."Axel emerged from the tent. Ten years of weathering had streaked his temples with white, but his eyes remained as lifeless as they had been a decade ago.He took the package

The blizzard stopped.Axel returned from the Forbidden Forest without Seraphina's body, but death clung to him like a shroud. When he pushed open the council hall doors, the overwhelming smell of blood made every elder tremble."Axel..." Vanessa's wrists were wrapped in thick bandages. She was still kneeling on the ground, trying to play on his emotions. "You came back... I'm in so much pain… I'm your fated mate. For the sake of the Moon Goddess, please forgive me this once...""Fated mate?" Axel walked up to her, his eyes as empty as dried wells. "I don't want it anymore."He raised his hand, gathered his power, and plunged it into his own chest. With brutal force, he ripped out the glowing golden bond thread.Vanessa's agonized screams tore through the hall as she writhed on the ground. Axel was in pain too, but he did not so much as flinch."Break."The golden thread snapped in his hand and scattered into particles of light."From today onward, the Shadowcrest pack has no

The blizzard cut across his face like knives, but Axel felt no pain. He tore through the snow and rushed toward the Forbidden Forest like a madman."Seraphina!"The wind scattered his shouts into nothing.Drag marks were seen on the ground. Though snow covered them, the blood trail stood out like a red serpent, stretching all the way to the cliff's edge. That was his Seraphina, drained of blood and dragged here like garbage.Axel collapsed to his knees at the cliff's edge. Below stretched a bottomless dark pit, filled only with wind that sounded like wailing ghosts."No... No..."He reached out, trying to grab the figure that had fallen, but there was nothing—only cold snow.Suddenly, the wind carried a filthy scrap of cloth. It caught on a dead branch at the cliff's edge.Axel's pupils constricted. He crawled over while trembling. Ignoring the thorns that tore his hands, he grabbed it.A handkerchief. Though caked with mud and frozen blood, he recognized it instantly. It was

"Then do it! Kill me!" Vanessa tilted her neck back and screamed, putting on the act of a martyr. "Without your trust, what's the point of being your fated mate? I might as well die!"She cried pitifully, but her body shook violently. She was betting on Axel's instinctive need to protect his fated mate. This time, she lost the bet."Fine." Axel's eyes were dead as he grabbed the knife from the table. "Since you want to die, I'll grant your wish.""No... Axel..." The defiance in Vanessa's eyes turned to fear.He seized her wrist with one large hand. The next second, blood sprayed out, splattering across his clothes like blooming flowers. Her scream echoed through the room. Vanessa stared at her blood-soaked hand and nearly fainted from terror. The martyr act vanished completely."Does it hurt?" Axel's voice was as cold as ice. "When they drained Seraphina dry, it hurt ten thousand times worse than this."He released her and let her writhe in her own blood."Guards. Watch her. E

When he reached the healer's quarters, Axel grabbed the head healer by the collar."Tell me how a she-wolf who just miscarried, broke her ribs, and had 800 milliliters of blood drained managed to knock out guards and escape!"The head healer trembled. "She... She pulled out the needle after the blood draw and jumped out the window..."A young healer nearby said quietly, "Didn't she knock people out before running?"The stories did not match.Just then, Leon rushed over, wiping sweat from his brow as he explained, "Alpha, it was so chaotic at the time. We must have gotten confused… Besides, I suspect she had an accomplice! It must have been that Rogue! He snuck in and rescued her during the chaos!""Right! She definitely had help! Otherwise, she couldn't have escaped!" The other healers quickly agreed.Axel said nothing. He touched the notebook in his coat. It was still warm against his chest. He might have trusted the wrong ones before—and paid the price for it. From now on, he

Axel closed the diary, his chest unbearably tight."You really were good to me back then." He spoke hoarsely to the empty air. "But that doesn't change the fact that you betrayed me. Seraphina... I need to know exactly when you changed."He shot to his feet while clutching the old diary and rushed toward Seraphina's room. If he was going to investigate, he would do it thoroughly.…Seraphina's room was in the most remote corner tower of the estate. It was small and cold. Axel rarely came here.He tore through drawers and cabinets until finally, in her bedside table, he found over a dozen old notebooks. All of them were his used account ledgers or meeting records.Axel's hands trembled. He refused to believe someone could have a change of heart without leaving a trace. If she had stopped loving him—if she had betrayed him—surely, her diary entries would show it!He flipped through them frantically.[Year Five. He had a stomachache today. I made him soup.
