Vincenzo POV
Eight Years Ago
What a rush! This is the good news Alpha Matteo has been hoping for. I can’t wait to get back to the pack and fill him in on how the meeting went. Since we made the decision to move to the United States four years ago, we have struggled to get our design and architecture company up and running. In Italy, we were well known, and sought after for our modern and sleek design aesthetics. Our pack relocated here to escape the plague and get a fresh start for our pack members. Many were skeptical about leaving Italy, but when Alpha Matteo promised that we would have a good-sized territory, gifted to us by a strong Alpha, who was friends with his father, more of our members were excited for the opportunity.
As a young Beta, I am eager to prove myself to Matteo. Sure, he’s my best friend, but I want him to see that I take this role seriously and that our pack has strong leadership. I volunteered to take this business trip and make a pitch to a company in New York City. This allowed Matteo to oversee the pack without worrying about being away for a couple of days. The drive is long; at least eight hours. You can almost drive through the entire country of Italy in that time, and this is only one state I’m driving through. The size of this country is overwhelming at times.I made a pitch to this tech company that wants to construct a new building in the middle of the city. As one of the lead architects and designers of our pack, I felt more than confident leading this pitch. They loved my design and proposal and said yes on the spot. They sent away all the other companies making proposals. This will bring in so much money for our pack over the next few years.
I’m about two hours away still, but the drive is pretty. A lot of trees to admire along the way. This is definitely giving me some inspiration for other types of designs in the future. Incorporating nature into the design in some way. My mind begins to trail off as I think of future creative projects.
I watch as the sun begins to set, and I’m reminded that the next full moon is in three days. Me and Carolina are going to mark each other as chosen mates under this next full moon. We have been together for over a year, and I love her so much. She is a teacher for the young pups of the pack.
Things are truly perfect.
The smile is quickly wiped from my face as I hear Matteo’s voice come to my mind through our pack link.‘Vincenzo! Where are you?!’ His voice is laced with panic.‘Just over an hour away from the territory. What is wrong?’ I do my best to stay calm. It is not like Matteo to get flustered.
‘Get here as fast as you can! There is a fire and it’s spreading through the pack fast! Rapidamente, amico!’ He cut the link before I could say anything else.
I stomp on the gas pedal and weave through traffic. I try reaching out to different pack members, but nobody is responding. Finally, I try to reach Carolina.
‘Carolina! Amore!?’
No reply.
I make it to our territory in half the time and shift to my large brown wolf immediately and take off through the forest. I’m immediately hit with the smell of smoke, fire, and death. We have lost people. I do my best to stay calm so I can focus and help when I arrive at the scene.
I tear through the tree line and see that several of our buildings are on fire. The packhouse, the training facility, and the school. These buildings are all close to each other. If one caught fire, it wouldn’t take much for the others to catch.
I see pack members running with water to try to contain the fire. I see groups of them being treated for burns- so many children. I shift back and throw on a pair of gym shorts that were discarded. I run to Fabian, one of my close friends and warriors.
“Fab, who isn’t accounted for?” I ask quickly as I help him carry large buckets of water to the burning structures.
“The packhouse is cleared. So is the gym. The school had a few children left inside. Alpha Matteo and Luna Rene ran inside to get them out,” he says as we dump the water on the wild flames.
“Carolina?” I ask, my chest tightening as I wait for him to respond.
“I haven’t seen her, Beta. She may still be inside getting the children out as well.”
I run to the school. The packhouse and gym are controlled. The school is still burning uncontrollably. This must have been where the fire started. The wiring in this building is old. We haven’t had a chance to update it yet.
“Carolina!”
Nothing.
I throw another giant bucket of water at the flames. It is so hot; the water turns to steam before it makes contact with the fire- useless.
“Alpha! Luna!”
Nothing.
I see a small window, but black smoke billowing out is obstructing my view of anything or anyone inside. I see a set of tiny hands wrapped around the edge of the window and I quickly grab for them.
“Beta Vincenzo!” Tomas, a younger kid, about six years old, clings to me as I pull him from the window. His skin is covered in soot and his eyes are red from the smoke. He is coughing furiously, trying to breathe.
“Tomas, who else is inside?” I ask him as I carry him to a safe area away from the fire. His eyes are filled with tears, and he won’t let go of my neck.
“Alpha and Luna found me. I was with Miss Carolina. They pushed me to the window, but then I heard a loud crash, and they told me to run to the window,” he says as he breaks out into loud sobs.
I hand him off to somebody else and rush back to the school.
As I run up to the school, the fire is now swallowing the entire building. I look up and see the roof is beginning to cave in. There are still over two dozen pack members around, trying to put the fire out.
“Everyone, get away from the school now!” I yell at the top of my lungs, pushing my Beta aura out. It isn’t nearly as strong as Matteo’s Alpha aura, or command, but it works. Everyone looks up and runs away from the school. Not even a moment later, the building collapses to the ground.
In the same moment, everyone drops to the ground in pain.I have felt this pain before. I felt it when Alpha Antonio, Matteo’s father, passed away from the fated plague. My head throbs; my chest tightens.
No. Not Matteo! Please, Moon Goddess!
Everyone lets out a loud howl as we all feel the link snap and we know that our Alpha has been taken from us. I shift to my wolf to try to ease the pain.
The air around me ripples and I feel my bones being pulled and elongating. I can feel my aura changing. Fabian is next to me, and I watch through my wolf’s eyes as he looks up at me and bows.
“Alpha Vincenzo…” He drops to one knee, as do the rest of the pack members.
The Alpha title has just been passed down to me. I stand up, feeling slightly taller, and make my way back to the school.
The flames are going down now that the majority of the structure has been burnt and smothered. I scan the scene as my pack members cry over the loss of their loved ones and our Alpha. I walk through the rubble, and I find him. Matteo has been crushed under a giant beam. Next to him is the body of his chosen mate, Rene. We have lost our Luna too.
I walk a little further and I can smell burned flesh, mixed with the faintest hint of jasmine.
No! Please!
Under a pile of debris, so close to a window, is her body.My Carolina…
Gone.
Emmy POV I make my way over to the training fields. With the unpredictable attacks from The Underground and the recent attack from The Forza Pack, Darius has started requiring all pack members to attend training. It is a smart move; everyone should have the basic skills to defend themselves and protect the pack as needed. I’m relieved Darius finally sent The Forza prisoners back to their territory. I never want to see them again. Their Beta killed Lyle, one of our strongest warriors. His older brother, Logan, is helping to lead training sessions now. Leslie, his younger sister, is one of the newer female warriors, but she hasn’t been back to training yet. Pearl has grown closer to her than I have since they are around the same age. I look for my sisters and see Amy and Pearl stretching off to the side. “Good morning, Emmy!” Pearl greets me excitedly. It’s hard to stay in a sulky mood around Pearl. She evokes happy energy; you can’t help but to be in a good mood ar
Vincenzo POV I’m pacing at the entrance to our territory, waiting for the twenty warriors I sent to Running River Pack to return. It’s been over two weeks since they left to do a simple recon mission. I quickly found out that their mission turned into a small attack when they were spotted and had to defend themselves. An attack was never in the plans. I spoke with Alpha Darius, and it seems my Beta, Renz, got carried away in the heat of battle and killed one of their warriors. This is a mess. I explained to Alpha Darius that we received threats from his pack that they would attack us. We both realized that this was all coordinated by The Underground. Alpha Darius explained that they're a rebellious group of wolves in the territory. This is not what I need right now. My pack has been doing really well the last couple of years. Our numbers have grown. The design and architecture business has been taking off and creating lots of jobs for our pack members. I need to tal
Emmy POV “Just a little more blush, okay, Em?” Pearl suggests as she helps me with my make-up. I angle my head to the side, giving her better access. “I don’t know why you’re so insistent that we get so dressed up tonight, Pearl,” Amy walks up, trying to put her earrings in. “You two are the worst, I swear. First, it’s the full moon tonight. We could meet our mates! Don’t you both want to look your best in case you meet them tonight? Second, Saph and Nathan are taking each other as chosen mates tonight. We are having an early dinner with them before they head out to… you know…” Pearl’s voice trails off and she hides her face in her hands, blush staining her pale skin. “Yea, yea. They’re gonna seal the deal,” Amy says, while obnoxiously thrusting her hips in the air. I throw a pillow from my bed at her, making her stumble. “I swear, Amy, you’re no better than a twelve-year-old boy. Grow up!” I scold her, then turn back to Pearl to let her finish my make-up.
Emmy POV I make my way over to Darius’ office at the packhouse the next morning. I am still feeling apprehensive about what he wants to discuss. He mentioned something about travel. Did he find out that I am making plans to leave the pack and move to New York City? No. There’s no way he could possibly know. I clear my head and make sure my heartbeat is normal before I knock on his office door. “Come on in, Emmy!” he calls out before I even get a chance to knock. My hand is still raised up inches from the door. His hearing is so good. I turn the knob and find that Daya, Tobias, and Lucas are already waiting inside as well. I swallow down a lump in my throat. It’s going to be fine. Nobody knows. I take my usual seat next to Lucas, but I can feel the awkward tension between us. I have been doing my best to avoid him. I can’t deny how much it still hurts to feel unwanted, but nobody needs to know about that either. I look up at Darius, waiting for
Vincenzo POV I am sitting in my office, finishing up some e-mails. The Running River Pack Alpha, and his entourage, have arrived. Viviana let them inside, but I’m not going to rush down and put on an act like I’m happy to meet him. I’m not. He imprisoned my pack members and maimed my Beta; he can wait a few minutes. I hear the clicking of Viviana’s heels against the dark, wood floors. She knows I hate it when she stomps on the floors in her heels. I make a note to check the floors for scratches after this meeting. “Vin! What the hell? We have company! An Alpha, his mate, and his Gamma are here. And some quiet girl. May I say how adorable his Gamma is, oof, so cute!” Her rambling is already giving me a headache. I massage my temples with my elbows on my desk, looking down at my keyboard. “Viv, please. Tone it down for a half-second, per favore,” I beg her. I slowly stand up and run my hands through my hair. “All right, let’s go,” I say to her, gesturing for her to l
Emmy POV Chapter 9 Emmy POV And just like that, I’m alone again. Separated from my sisters- not that any of them want to be around me right now. I make a mental note to reach out to Pearl to apologize to her. That is, if I ever get a second alone. Viviana has just brought me up to my room. This girl is…perky. She is extremely loud, talks fast, and has a permanent smile on her face. “So, this is your room, Emerald. It has great light in the mornings. Are you a morning person? If not, this remote will completely black out the windows. Personally, I like to sleep in a little. But now that it’s getting warmer out, it’s nice to wake up with the sun and go for a run in the mornings. You know?” Am I supposed to answer? She seems pretty content talking to herself. She holds her gaze on me for a few more seconds and when I don’t answer, she just shrugs and continues to busy herself around the space. “And you have a good-size closet. It doesn’t look like you packed to
Vincenzo POV I have been restless all night. I don’t like having people in my home. I’m still annoyed Viviana would offer for these two to stay here; there are plenty of guest rooms in the pack house. I roll over for the hundredth time and faintly hear footsteps going downstairs. I focus harder and hear some rustling in the kitchen. I grunt in frustration. If one of these visitors makes a mess in my kitchen, I’ll go ballistic. I throw the covers off and get out of my bed. I sleep in the nude, so I pull on a pair of dark navy sweatpants. I creep down the spiral staircase and the smell of desserts and pastries hits my nose. Now they’re eating my desserts? I peek around the corner and see it’s the quiet, mousy girl. Emerald. She definitely is like a little mouse right now- creeping around in the kitchen and eating…tiramisu. I saw her admiring it earlier and she never took a bite. I watch her slip the fork into her mouth and listen to her hum as the dessert
Emmy POV Embarrassed doesn’t begin to cover how I’m feeling. Mortified. Terrified. Confused. Yet, for some reason…excited? I ran up to my room so quickly after he told me to have one more piece of cake. At first, he seemed annoyed that I was downstairs in the kitchen. Then, he appeared to be almost playful. I’m not going to lie; it pissed me off that he called me a mouse. I’m not some dirty vermin, sneaking around. I could tell he had turned our exchange into some kind of game. I just wanted it to be over and go back to bed. He wouldn’t let me leave. He wasn’t using his alpha command on me, so he wasn’t forcing me to stay, but I couldn’t move. My feet were stuck in place. With every demand he made, I found myself wanting to say yes to him. And I’m so embarrassed to admit that I felt excited when I complied. As much as I didn’t want to make him angrier, I didn’t want to make a complete fool of myself. He wanted me to eat the entire cake. Why? To prove that
