It was almost early morning when Jeremy returned home.

"Sorry I got back so late, Nina. There was some traffic when I took Sonia home," he put down his camera bag and explained softly.

"I was planning to call a few friends over to witness our proposal, but it's already so late. We should just… postpone the proposal to another time."

"No need," I answered flatly, my eyes not leaving the computer screen.

His movements paused, and he frowned slightly.

"Are you mad, Nina? Things happen sometimes. Besides, we've been together for seven years. A few more days won't make any difference."

Jeremy took out a box of ravioli and gave me an apologetic smile.

"A little gift to make it up to you."

The ravioli was still warm, from the place we loved most before we moved here.

I opened the box and smelled pepper.

Cilantro was sprinkled on top, but there was no parsley.

It was Sonia's preferred taste.

I put the lid back on the ravioli and pushed it aside, then said calmly, "Jeremy, I never eat cilantro."

Jeremy was stunned, then slapped his forehead in annoyance.

"My bad. I was in such a hurry that I mistook Sonia's takeout for yours. Why don't you go to bed first? I'll take this to Sonia right away. If she doesn't get the one with cilantro, she'll definitely throw a fit."

I was stunned. I almost couldn't believe what I just heard.

"You're taking it to her now?"

He nodded, not seeing anything wrong with that.

"Yeah, it's just a quick trip."

Sonia lived twenty kilometers away, so driving there and back would take an hour.

Jeremy, a person who hated wasting time, thought it was just a quick trip.

I took a few deep breaths and forcibly swallowed the angry questions that were about to burst forth from my mouth.

Noticing my expression, Jeremy blinked.

"Nina, you're not… jealous of your best friend, are you?"

Having been together for so many years, I should trust him.

After graduation, I became a lawyer and was so busy every day that I barely had time to eat.

Jeremy had flexible work hours, so I left all the household chores to him.

One time, a friend came to our home for dinner. When he saw Jeremy doing the dishes, he teased Jeremy for doing all the chores I should be doing.

That time, Jeremy almost fell out with the friend.

"What do you mean, the chores Nina should be doing? Being a lawyer has always been her dream. I'm her boyfriend, so it's my duty to wholeheartedly support her."

Back then, I thought we would live happily ever after.

"…If you mind me going alone, we can go together."

Before Jeremy was done speaking, my phone suddenly rang.

It was Sonia.

Her voice was very weak.

"Nina, I think I have a fever… I feel awful. Can you—"

Before I could even say anything, Jeremy snatched the phone from me.

"A fever?! I told you to cover yourself up at the beach, but you wouldn't listen, so serve you right. Wait for me, I'm coming over!"

He rushed out of the house and got into the car.

Just as he was about to start the car, I opened the passenger door and got in.

He looked stunned, as if he had suddenly recalled that I existed. A trace of embarrassment appeared on his face.

"It's so late. Why don't you go to bed, Nina? I can go by myself."

I looked at him expressionlessly.

"Sonia is my friend."

The man fell silent.

The moment the door opened, Jeremy immediately rushed in.

"How are you feeling, Sonia? Are you still nauseous?"

Sonia's cheeks were red from fever. Curled up in the covers, she whimpered, "My head is killing me, Jeremy… I'll definitely wear more clothes next time."

Jeremy frowned, his eyes full of pain.

"You never listen. You always dress for style and not warmth for photoshoots. See what happens when you do that? Hurry up and take your medicine. I'll stay here and watch over you tonight."

Sonia nodded obediently and smiled sweetly.

"You're so kind. I appreciate you, Jeremy."

Standing at the door, I suddenly felt like a third wheel.

So I turned around and walked out. I then replied to the text my father sent me half an hour ago.

"Dad, I'm willing to transfer to the law firm in Seaborough."

With one look, I could tell something was terribly wrong with him.He had lost a lot of weight and looked utterly exhausted. He had cut his hair into a buzz cut. When his gaze landed on me, his eyes lit up."Nina, long time no see."I subtly frowned. Because no one else was around, I took a few steps back."What are you doing here?"He looked hurt by my wariness and forced a strained smile."I'm the photographer your firm hired to take promotional shots."That only made me more baffled.Jeremy had always preferred personal jobs. He never took on commercial or corporate gigs.He had always complained that that kind of work was tedious. But this time, he agreed to shoot for a law firm—my law firm."Did you take this job on purpose?"A trace of pain flickered in his eyes as his voice rasped out, "Yes. I just wanted to see you. I was afraid that if I came looking for you out of the blue, you wouldn't see me, so I used this job as an opportunity to get close to you."I came he

He didn't turn back.He had seen right through this unhinged woman. She did not love him at all.She was simply bitter. Her actions were driven purely out of hatred for Nina. When Jeremy refused to stop, Sonia clenched her teeth so hard they nearly shattered, and she blurted out, "If you go look f

Jeremy stood still for second, unable to process what he had just heard."Hank, did you just say Nina's best friend reported her?"Hank was growing increasingly impatient."You didn't know? The one who reported my daughter is Sonia. She puts on this pitiful, innocent act, but deep down, she's vile!"Alright, stop wasting my time. Get out of my sight."With a loud bang, he slammed the door shut.Jeremy froze, his mind blank for a long time. The anonymous whistleblower who reported Nina was actually Sonia.Weren't they supposed to be best friends? His mind was an absolute mess, completely incapable of gathering his thoughts. After a moment, he got in his car, slammed his foot on the gas pedal and drove to the law firm.He needed to get to the bottom of this. When the receptionist saw Jeremy storming in, she immediately blocked his path."Sir, do you have an appointment—Wait, it's you?"She eyed the anxious-looking man suspiciously."I saw you taking pictures the last time.

"Say that again? Where did Nina go?!"He suddenly rushed forward and demanded fiercely. The two girls jumped in fright."Who the heck are you?!"Jeremy's breathing turned ragged. He felt as though the situation was rapidly spinning out of his control."Why has Nina suddenly transferred to Seaborough? Why didn't she tell me? Where is she right now?!"The rapid sequence of questions caught the girls off guard."Are you out of your mind? The whole firm knew about Ms. Wallace's transfer. It was her own request.""Whoever you are, you'd better hurry up and go find her instead of wasting time here questioning us."They rolled their eyes hard at him.Jeremy's brain was a complete mess, and he stood rooted to the spot. There was no way. Nina couldn't have possibly left him.She promised to get a marriage license with him today...His heart was beating so fast it felt like it was going to smash through his chest. A second later, he sprinted back to his car.If Nina had left, her p

"Jeremy!"Sonia waved at him with enthusiasm."Why didn't you pick up your phone when I called? I had to come here to look for you."Sonia pouted.Jeremy forced a smile, though it didn't reach his eyes."I'm busy today."Although Sonia knew full well what he was busy with, she still feigned ignorance."What could you possibly be busy with? Surely you're not going to get a marriage license with Nina, right? Stop joking."Didn't you hear? She fooled around with a client. Aren't you mad at all?"Jeremy frowned slightly, but didn't refute her."Come on, let's go. I've booked a photo spot under the cherry blossoms. Come take my pictures."She looped her arm around his to pull him away.To her surprise, Jeremy actually pushed her hand away."Sonia, I'm going to get a marriage license with Nina today. The photoshoot will have to wait for some other day."Sonia's smile froze."You—are you for real?"Jeremy nodded."It's been seven years. We need to move on to the next phase of

I froze, unable to believe my ears."What did you say?"Jeremy frowned."Nina, to be honest, you aren't even among the top lawyers in your firm. I have no idea why you're so busy every day."He paused, his gaze growing increasingly complex."Sonia mentioned before that when you were handling her divorce lawsuit against her ex-husband, you secretly met up with him several times behind her back. Is that true?"The blood in my veins felt like it was frozen solid.Jeremy did not believe me.All it took was an utterly absurd and clumsy trick.Sonia's ex-husband was not easy to deal with. I had to resort to various tactics just to force him to slip up.I couldn't believe Sonia would twist that into an attack against my character."You don't believe me?"Jeremy pressed his lips tightly together without giving a direct answer."To be honest, it's hard for me not to overthink after something like that happened."The last remaining bit of warmth in my chest thoroughly turned to ice
