I open the first message.

It’s a photograph of Soren and me leaving one of the boutiques. Another shows Emerson holding shopping bags, laughing at something I said. There’s one of the three of us standing beside the car, and another of Soren opening the passenger door for me.

All of them were taken weeks ago.

From a distance.

Without our knowledge.

My stomach tightens.

I scroll down.

Another message appears, this time containing documents.

My overseas bank account.

The account I’d opened under

The woman who killed the other woman.I turn back slowly. The girl’s face is partly hidden by her hair, but as she shifts again, I catch sight of her chin. There, just beneath it, is a small patch of dried blood. My stomach drops. It’s her.The woman I watched tear out another person’s throat. The woman who searched a dead body, found whatever she wanted, and walked away laughing. She’s asleep in my bathroom.I take a step backward.I consider waking her, but the thought of confronting a murderer in a room with no witnesses makes my blood run cold.I don’t know how strong she is.And I don’t know what she’ll do if she realises I saw her.I tighten my grip on my journal and leave the bathroom as quietly as I can.My eyes keep darting toward the door as I cross the bedroom.I don’t stop to look around.I simply get out.I need distance from that girl.I need to think. And above all, I need to avoid becoming the next person whose throat she decides to tear out.I’m halfway down the stair

The sound of traffic grows louder ahead. I quicken my pace, hoping to find the main road where I can flag down a taxi.Instead, I reach a narrow alley between two buildings. Two women are arguing near a metal door. One is dressed in a short, revealing outfit, with heavy makeup and a cigarette dangling between her fingers. She looks irritated rather than angry, as though the conversation is an inconvenience she has been forced to endure. The other woman stands several feet away, her hands clasped in front of her.“Please,” the second woman says. “Just give me a little more time. I’ll get the money. I swear I’ll pay you back.”The first woman laughs.“You’ve been saying that for days.”“I just need enough for tonight. Put it on credit. I’ll pay you back when I get the money.”“No money, no product. That’s how it works.”“Please!”The woman with the cigarette flicks ash onto the ground.“Do I look like a charity?”“I’m begging you.”“And I’m telling you to pay. No one takes these things

For one brief moment, I think she might actually consider it.Then she lifts her chin.“I gave you life and a future.”“Ha! A cage more like! You’re calling a cage a future.”Her expression changes.“Enough.”“No, it isn’t enough! You don’t get to decide who I marry. You don’t get to monitor my money. And you don’t get to send people to follow me because you’re unhappy that I’m living somewhere you can’t control.”“You are making a terrible mistake.”“Then let me make it! It’s my bloody life for goddess’s sake!”She takes a step toward me.“Why are you being so difficult? If you want to ruin your life, at least have the decency to do it quietly. I cannot handle the shame of you hanging around that homewrecker anymore.”For a moment, I don’t understand what she’s saying. Then the words sink in.“Homewrecker?”“Soren Wystern. The man you’ve decided to parade around with while your mate waits for you to come to your senses.”I feel something inside me snap.“Why do you want me to get bac

Information she shouldn’t have had access to.At the bottom of the messages is a short command.‘Come home right now.’For a moment, I can’t move. Then anger rises so quickly that it feels like something hot has been poured into my veins. What the hell is wrong with these people? Why can’t they leave me alone? Why can’t they accept that I am no longer willing to live my

-Carrie-The afternoon sun spills through the windows of our penthouse, painting the living room in warm gold.I’m sitting cross-legged on the soft rug in front of the coffee table, surrounded by paperwork, while Soren occupies the space opposite me. The table between us is so crowded with documents that we’ve resorted to spreading some of them across the floor. We’re reviewing the arrangements for manufacturing once the Exesus detection technology has been successfully tested. There are contracts to consider, potential suppliers to investigate, distribution agreements to prepare, and a dozen other details that make my head ache if I think about them for too long. It’s odd really. Since I’ve seen that the product will do well, I wanted to push ahead with the documents for manufacturing so I thought I’d have to convince Soren about it but turns out he was already considering it. That’s what we’ve been working on.Soren, naturally, seems perfectly comfortable. He has a pen in one hand a

“Mrs. Matthews,” I begin carefully, “our personal decisions have very little to do with the technology we’re presenting today. I’d be happy to explain the business proposal and answer any questions you have about the agreement.”“Oh, I’m sure you would.” She waves a hand dismissively. “Young women often think that if they can present themselves well enough, people will overlook their poor judgement.”The words sting more than they should.Perhaps because I’ve heard similar things all my life.Perhaps because I spent years trying to be the kind of daughter my mother wanted, only to discover that no amount of obedience would ever be enough.Or perhaps because a part of me still remembers the girl I was before my first life ended, the girl who believed that if she loved Kaiden well enough, he would never hurt her.Vivienne leans back in her chair.“Let me give you some advice. A woman should be careful about the decisions she makes. There are consequences to rejecting a mate, especially
