Chapter 2

Author: Sunny Embrace
Night had fallen, but Uncle Hubert replied almost immediately. He was overjoyed and went on and on about how my father and stepmother would only hold me back. If I was willing to go abroad, he insisted, I would surely have a better life.

But as I stared at the screen, a needling pain spread through my chest, sharp and unrelenting.

Of course I had not stayed here for them. So why had I stayed?

I gazed at the sea beyond the window, lost in a haze of pain. There was only one person I could not let go of.

So why was he entangled with Dawn?

The familiar voice broke the silence. "It's not your fault."

My future self sat on the edge of the bed, hazy as a patch of moonlight. "It's his heart. It was never steady. Not once."

I stared blankly at "her."

Never?

Aiden and I had known each other for more than 10 years. He had moved in next door when he was six. His father was violent and beat him every single day.

My mother had taken pity on him. She often invited him over for meals, bandaged his wounds, and gave him a place where he could breathe for a while.

Before my mother died, he knelt beside her sickbed and swore that he would take care of me for the rest of my life. He promised he would never let anyone hurt me.

Yet now, his own hand gripped the knife buried in my heart, twisting the blade until everything inside me felt raw and torn.

I smiled bitterly.

Then my future self continued, "Tomorrow, he'll give you a birthday gift. It belonged to your mother, but you can't let it move you. You can't soften toward him because of it.

"Because Dawn gave it to him. And Dawn is the one who killed our mother."

My head snapped up.

"Our mother didn't fall by accident. Dawn pushed her down the stairs during an argument. Then she took the necklace your mother was wearing. She kept it as a trophy."

"What did you say?" I reached out instinctively, desperate to stop her, but before I could sign another question, the hazy figure vanished again.

…

It was not until the following evening that the aquamarine necklace appeared in Aiden's palm as he held it out to me.

Every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze.

"Ves, haven't you always wanted something of your mom's back? Don't you like it?"

Aiden did not get the tearful, touched reaction he had apparently expected.

He looked slightly surprised, then gave a quiet laugh. "We're limited by what we can do on the ship. Once we're back, I'll make it up to you and celebrate your birthday properly. What else do you want?"

I raised my eyes to him, my expression blank and hollow.

Then I smiled.

"Then I want Dawn and her mother to disappear," I signed. "If it weren't for them, my mother would still be alive."

Aiden's face darkened instantly. "Dawn's mother was in the wrong, but Dawn is a victim too, just like you."

It was the first time he had ever called her that.

"People call her the mistress' daughter. That's how she ended up with depression. None of that was something she could help."

"Something she couldn't help?" I gritted my teeth and stared at him, my hands signing faster and faster. "Every single day at the Tyson house, she provoked my mother and flaunted herself in front of her. The day my mother fell, it might have been because of her..."

"That's enough!" Aiden cut me off sharply.

At that moment, I saw a brief flicker of panic in his eyes. Aiden knew the truth.

The instant the realization struck me, it felt as though I had fallen straight into hell. I could barely breathe.

"You're being too rash. Calm down." Aiden turned and walked away without looking back.

I sat alone in a corner of the dining hall.

"What would the original me be doing right now?" I signed calmly.

My future self stood beside me. "Moved by his gift, you're confessing your feelings to him right now.

"He accepted your confession. But when he returned to his room, he found Dawn so worked up that she was on the verge of an episode. So, to comfort her, he confessed to her too.

"The fireworks went off above the ship all night, and you thought they were a birthday gift for you."

The moment she finished speaking, a firework bloomed beyond the window.

Across both lives, Aiden's feelings for Dawn had never changed.

A cold laugh escaped me. Then I rose and left the dining hall, heading toward the secluded corner of the deck where the two of them stood wrapped in each other's arms.

  • Relationship Advice From the Future   Chapter 9

It was the first time I had seen Aiden since we parted ways on the cruise four years ago. He had lost a great deal of weight. His eyes were sunken, worn down by something heavy and enduring. He sat across from me with his head bowed, unable to keep still. "I'm sorry. Am I interrupting?"I met his eyes calmly. "Not at all. We were about to head out anyway. Was there something you wanted to say to me, Mr. Tyson?"The moment those words left my mouth, his shoulders sagged. His lips trembled as if a thousand words were fighting to get out, but in the end, only three escaped. "I am sorry."I smiled faintly. "You've already said those words to me hundreds of times in those letters."Aiden looked up, his breath unsteady. "Then have you...""I don't forgive you," I said calmly. "Mr. Tyson, no one forgives the person who destroyed their life. Not even when given a second chance. Not ever."Aiden covered his face with both hands and gasped like a fish out of water. "I know. But I still n

Summer passed quickly. By September, I had arrived at a prestigious university abroad, completed my registration, and begun a new life. For two full months, I heard nothing from Aiden. He seemed to vanish from my life like chalk wiped from a blackboard, gone without a trace. And that was exactly what I wanted.Uncle Hubert came to pick me up the moment I landed. He had already arranged an apartment for me and taken care of everything else.I changed my phone number. Aside from a few close friends back home, I deleted every contact from my old life, including every last relative from the Monroe family. My worthless excuse for a father never reached out to me either. Not until a month after the semester began did I finally receive a call from him.He opened with a sharp, relentless interrogation. "Vesper, your sister's being sued by that little psycho Aiden. Get back here and help her, now!"I let out a cold laugh. "First, she's not my sister. Second, I've already made myself clea

Aiden's heart sank. He pressed on with question after question."She already submitted her application. How could she not come back?"Elvin glared at him, irritation written all over his face. "Huh? What's the application got to do with anything? You think there aren't universities abroad?"That uncle of hers has been pushing her to study overseas every other day. She must've applied to some school over there. She's leaving for good!"Tch. Let her go. Her uncle can pay every cent of her tuition. She's not getting a single dollar out of me!"Elvin went on grumbling and cursing, with no sign that he would stop anytime soon. However, Aiden could no longer hear him. He staggered backward, barely able to breathe through the pain.Vesper really was leaving. No. She was already gone."Going to look for her?" That familiar voice sounded behind him again and followed his hurried footsteps. "And then what? Hurt her all over again once you find her?""Shut up!" Aiden whirled around and d

Aiden stared at the white pills on the counter in disbelief, feeling as though someone had slapped him out of nowhere."How could this be? How could this be..." Even after leaving the pharmacy, he wandered in a daze, like a man who had lost his soul, muttering under his breath. "I saw her episodes with my own eyes. That medical record...""She made all of it up to fool you." Future Aiden appeared again, his tone devoid of emotion. "All she had to do was cry a little and play the victim a few times, and you believed every word.""What about Vesper?""Aiden, you got tangled up with the one person she hates most in this world, and you hid it from her for years."She loved you that much. She trusted you with everything she had. And what did you do? You even brought Dawn along on your graduation trip behind her back."She was foolish enough to think she'd finally found happiness. All the while, she had no idea what you were doing in that room with Dawn every single night!""I didn't

The man in front of Aiden stepped closer, his voice low and rough. "Who am I? You don't recognize me?"Aiden had nowhere left to retreat, yet he still couldn't believe his eyes."I'm you, ten years from now." The other Aiden let out a cold laugh. "Don't bother looking for her. She's never coming back. She finally gets to leave. Good for her.""What the hell are you talking about? What are you?!" Aiden reached for him as though trying to grab a ghost, but his hand passed straight through empty air.He spun around. There was no one behind him either."A hallucination?" he muttered, but the panic tightening his chest only grew worse. It wasn't the sudden apparition, whether ghost or man, wearing his own face that frightened him most. It was the fact that every call to Vesper went unanswered. She had blocked his number.Aiden had never felt so helpless or out of control. He forced himself to steady his breathing, flagged down a taxi, and prepared to head for the airport. Then Dawn

  • Relationship Advice From the Future   Chapter 4

Five days later, the cruise ship arrived at port and docked.Throughout those five days, Aiden and I did not exchange a single word. It was not until the day we disembarked that he bought me a bouquet in an attempt to make peace."I was too rash that day. I'm sorry."The words were an apology, but his expression remained perfectly at ease.He had always thought I was easy to coax. In his mind, the smallest gesture was enough to ensure I would never stay angry with him for long.I looked down at the flowers in my hands and smiled faintly: lilies. They were Dawn's favorite flowers, and I was allergic to their pollen.Without a second thought, I tossed the bouquet into a nearby trash can.Aiden's face darkened, but before he could say anything, tears suddenly spilled down my cheeks. My gaze had fallen on a little girl nearby who was selling flowers, and I began to cry."What's wrong?" Aiden immediately panicked. "If you don't like them, that's fine. I'll just buy you another bou
