Chapter 4

Author: Sunny Embrace
Five days later, the cruise ship arrived at port and docked.

Throughout those five days, Aiden and I did not exchange a single word. It was not until the day we disembarked that he bought me a bouquet in an attempt to make peace.

"I was too rash that day. I'm sorry."

The words were an apology, but his expression remained perfectly at ease.

He had always thought I was easy to coax. In his mind, the smallest gesture was enough to ensure I would never stay angry with him for long.

I looked down at the flowers in my hands and smiled faintly: lilies.

They were Dawn's favorite flowers, and I was allergic to their pollen.

Without a second thought, I tossed the bouquet into a nearby trash can.

Aiden's face darkened, but before he could say anything, tears suddenly spilled down my cheeks.

My gaze had fallen on a little girl nearby who was selling flowers, and I began to cry.

"What's wrong?" Aiden immediately panicked. "If you don't like them, that's fine. I'll just buy you another bouquet—"

"Aiden," I signed, cutting him off. "I had a dream last night. I dreamed we had a daughter, just as adorable as that little girl."

Aiden froze for a second, then smiled as if he understood. "Isn't that a good thing? If we really had a daughter, even spoiling her rotten like a little princess wouldn't be too much."

I smiled quietly, but my eyes were as lifeless as stagnant water.

Aiden's phone suddenly rang.

"Wait." He stepped aside and covered the receiver.

A moment later, he hung up in a hurry and said, "Dawn isn't feeling well. I'm going to get her a cab to the hotel. I'll be back soon. Just wait for me here. Don't wander off."

I nodded quietly.

He turned and hurried away.

The next second, I raised my hand, flagged down a taxi, and climbed in.

A fluent string of words left my mouth. "To the airport."

My throat had only just recovered, so my voice still felt rusty, and a faint ache lingered there.

I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.

Once again, everything before me was drenched in red.

Five days earlier, I had stepped into a memory from ten years in the future and witnessed with my own eyes the moment Aiden "cured" me.

His method was my daughter. He had Dawn push my daughter down the stairs, exactly as my mother had fallen all those years ago.

"Dawn is writing a paper. The subject is whether patients who lost their voice due to psychological trauma can be shocked into speaking again if the original traumatic scene is recreated.

"Vesper, to control the variables, I had no choice but to use your daughter for the experiment. She's your only family left now, after all. Only this way will the shock be strong enough. Only this way will my data be precise enough.

"It's just an experiment. I took precautions. Nothing will happen to her. Don't blame Dawn for this."

The two of them traded excuses back and forth until their experiment succeeded.

I cradled my daughter's body as she lay in a pool of blood and let out a raw, agonized scream.

Their so-called precautions had done nothing. The fall left my child with permanent brain damage.

The instant my 18-year-old self witnessed that scene, I nearly screamed along with her. That was how I regained my voice ten years early.

My future self held me tightly and apologized again and again as her body slowly turned transparent. "I didn't expect you to feel this much pain, even though you haven't lived through any of it yet. But at least now, I get to live a different life."

At last, she smiled with contentment, for her freedom and mine.

The taxi pulled away. I stared into the distance and never looked back.

-

An hour later, Aiden returned to the waiting area and froze.

A passerby offered the information out of simple kindness, unaware of its significance. "You mean the girl in the white dress? I saw her get into a taxi. Looked like she was headed to the airport."

The bouquet Aiden had just bought for Vesper slipped from his hand and crashed to the ground.

How could this be? What would Vesper be doing at the airport? How could she possibly leave him?

He spun around, ready to chase after her, but someone suddenly blocked his path. "She's gone. She won't be coming back."

Aiden from ten years in the future stood before him, drenched in blood from head to toe. His mocking gaze settled on his 18-year-old self.

The younger Aiden stared in terror at the face identical to his own. He stumbled back a step and cried out, his voice cracking, "Who... Who are you?!"

It was the first time I had seen Aiden since we parted ways on the cruise four years ago. He had lost a great deal of weight. His eyes were sunken, worn down by something heavy and enduring. He sat across from me with his head bowed, unable to keep still. "I'm sorry. Am I interrupting?"I met his eyes calmly. "Not at all. We were about to head out anyway. Was there something you wanted to say to me, Mr. Tyson?"The moment those words left my mouth, his shoulders sagged. His lips trembled as if a thousand words were fighting to get out, but in the end, only three escaped. "I am sorry."I smiled faintly. "You've already said those words to me hundreds of times in those letters."Aiden looked up, his breath unsteady. "Then have you...""I don't forgive you," I said calmly. "Mr. Tyson, no one forgives the person who destroyed their life. Not even when given a second chance. Not ever."Aiden covered his face with both hands and gasped like a fish out of water. "I know. But I still n

Summer passed quickly. By September, I had arrived at a prestigious university abroad, completed my registration, and begun a new life. For two full months, I heard nothing from Aiden. He seemed to vanish from my life like chalk wiped from a blackboard, gone without a trace. And that was exactly what I wanted.Uncle Hubert came to pick me up the moment I landed. He had already arranged an apartment for me and taken care of everything else.I changed my phone number. Aside from a few close friends back home, I deleted every contact from my old life, including every last relative from the Monroe family. My worthless excuse for a father never reached out to me either. Not until a month after the semester began did I finally receive a call from him.He opened with a sharp, relentless interrogation. "Vesper, your sister's being sued by that little psycho Aiden. Get back here and help her, now!"I let out a cold laugh. "First, she's not my sister. Second, I've already made myself clea

Aiden's heart sank. He pressed on with question after question."She already submitted her application. How could she not come back?"Elvin glared at him, irritation written all over his face. "Huh? What's the application got to do with anything? You think there aren't universities abroad?"That uncle of hers has been pushing her to study overseas every other day. She must've applied to some school over there. She's leaving for good!"Tch. Let her go. Her uncle can pay every cent of her tuition. She's not getting a single dollar out of me!"Elvin went on grumbling and cursing, with no sign that he would stop anytime soon. However, Aiden could no longer hear him. He staggered backward, barely able to breathe through the pain.Vesper really was leaving. No. She was already gone."Going to look for her?" That familiar voice sounded behind him again and followed his hurried footsteps. "And then what? Hurt her all over again once you find her?""Shut up!" Aiden whirled around and d

Aiden stared at the white pills on the counter in disbelief, feeling as though someone had slapped him out of nowhere."How could this be? How could this be..." Even after leaving the pharmacy, he wandered in a daze, like a man who had lost his soul, muttering under his breath. "I saw her episodes with my own eyes. That medical record...""She made all of it up to fool you." Future Aiden appeared again, his tone devoid of emotion. "All she had to do was cry a little and play the victim a few times, and you believed every word.""What about Vesper?""Aiden, you got tangled up with the one person she hates most in this world, and you hid it from her for years."She loved you that much. She trusted you with everything she had. And what did you do? You even brought Dawn along on your graduation trip behind her back."She was foolish enough to think she'd finally found happiness. All the while, she had no idea what you were doing in that room with Dawn every single night!""I didn't

The man in front of Aiden stepped closer, his voice low and rough. "Who am I? You don't recognize me?"Aiden had nowhere left to retreat, yet he still couldn't believe his eyes."I'm you, ten years from now." The other Aiden let out a cold laugh. "Don't bother looking for her. She's never coming back. She finally gets to leave. Good for her.""What the hell are you talking about? What are you?!" Aiden reached for him as though trying to grab a ghost, but his hand passed straight through empty air.He spun around. There was no one behind him either."A hallucination?" he muttered, but the panic tightening his chest only grew worse. It wasn't the sudden apparition, whether ghost or man, wearing his own face that frightened him most. It was the fact that every call to Vesper went unanswered. She had blocked his number.Aiden had never felt so helpless or out of control. He forced himself to steady his breathing, flagged down a taxi, and prepared to head for the airport. Then Dawn
