Sylvia's POV

We got back from the cemetery just after nine.

The apartment smelled like coffee. Bella had made a pot — a big one — and Romano had cleared the living room table, spread out the papers we'd collected over the last few weeks, and set up what looked, for all intents and purposes, like a war room.

Nobody said anything when we walked in.

Nobody asked how the cemetery was.

They just looked at us, and we looked at them, and then Bella stood up and poured me a cup of coffee and set it dow

  • Rented Husband    The LawSuit

Chapter Sixty-TwoSylvia's POVThe lawyer's office was on the thirty-fourth floor of a building that looked like it had been designed to make people feel small.I walked in with the three boxes stacked in a cart, Adrian beside me, Bella and Romano behind us. The receptionist looked up, took in the cart, took in our faces, and didn't ask a single question. She just picked up the phone and said a name I didn't catch. We were shown into a conference room. The lawyer's name was Margot Reyes. She was in her fifties, silver-haired, sharp-eyed, and had a reputation for winning cases that nobody else would touch. She'd been recommended by a friend of a friend of Romano's, and she'd agreed to see us on the condition that we bring "everything we have" and "don't waste my time."We didn't waste her time.We laid it all out. The originals from Charles Ashford. The folder from William's safe. Romano's internal files. Elizabeth's confession. My mother's statement. My father's letter. Every piece of

  • Rented Husband    Clearing Father’s Name

Adrian's POVI drove back in the dark. The files were in the trunk — three boxes, taped shut, the kind of paper weight that made the car sit a little lower on the road. Every mile I put between that house and the city felt like something. Not relief. Not yet. Something quieter than that. Something that felt almost like the moment before a storm.Sylvia called twice on the drive. The first time, just to hear my voice. The second time, to ask if I was okay. I told her yes. I wasn't. I was thinking about Charles Ashford's hands — the way they'd shaken when he handed me the first folder, the way he'd kept looking toward the window the entire time I was reading. He'd been afraid for fifteen years. And tonight, for the first time, he'd let someone else carry a piece of it.I pulled up to Romano's building just after eleven.Sylvia was waiting on the front step. She didn't run to me. She just stood up slowly and waited, the way she always did — like she'd learned a long time ago that running

  • Rented Husband    Finding Charles

Adrian's POVWe split up at noon.Bella took the laptop. Romano took the phone calls. Sylvia took the notebook, her father's notebook, the one she'd been filling in since the cemetery and sat down at the kitchen table with a pen and started writing down every name she could remember her father ever saying out loud in front of her.I took the car.My job was simple: find Charles Ashford. Not as simple as it sounded. The man had disappeared fifteen years ago. No public records, no recent addresses, no social media. Whoever he was, he'd either changed his name or gone completely off the grid. Either way, my usual methods weren't going to work.I started with what I had.A first name. A last name. A connection to Leon Chen. A phone call to Sylvia's mother sometime in the last decade. That was it.I drove to a coffee shop on the edge of the city and sat in the back with my laptop. I pulled up every business database I had access to. Every corporate filing. Every property record. Every addr

Bella pulled up a chair next to him.For a while, nobody said anything. Then Romano spoke."So," he said. "What do we actually have?"I looked at the table. At the papers. At the documents we'd collected from Vermont, from William's safe, from Elizabeth's confession, from Francesca's dropped hints. Everything we had. Everything we'd gathered. Every piece of a puzzle we'd been assemb

  • Rented Husband    Visiting Dad

Sylvia's POVI don't remember going upstairs.I don't remember walking past the others, or climbing the steps, or finding my way into Adrian's room. I just remember that at some point I was sitting on the edge of the bed, and Adrian was beside me, and the rest of the apartment was quiet. He didn't say anything. He didn't ask me how I was, or tell me it was going to be okay, or try to explain what had just happened. He just sat down next to me, close enough that I could feel the warmth of him, and stayed there. Waiting. Not for me to talk. Just for me.I stared at the wall for a long time.I thought about my father. I thought about the morning he died, the same morning I'd stood in front of him in the kitchen and asked him for money for a movie. He'd handed me a twenty and told me to have a good day. I remembered his hand. I remembered the way he'd ruffled my hair. He'd known, that morning. He'd known it was going to be the last one.And he hadn't told me.I thought about the bathroom.

  • Rented Husband    Decisions

Sylvia's POVI walked down the stairs.I don't remember deciding to. I don't remember standing up, or leaving the study, or passing Romano in the hallway, or getting to the front door. I just remember that suddenly I was outside, and the night air was cold, and I was standing on the front step of Romano's building, and there she was.My mother.Standing by a black car at the curb. She was wearing a long coat and she looked exactly the way she had the last time I'd seen her, thin, pale, tired. The hospital bracelet was still on her wrist. She'd left the hospital without being discharged. She must have. That was the only explanation. She saw me.She didn't move.I walked toward her.I don't know how. I don't know how my legs worked. I don't know how I got across that sidewalk. I don't know how my voice came out when it did. But it did. And it was quiet, and it was steady, and I was shaking so hard I could barely hold myself upright."Mom.""Sylvia.""Elizabeth told me."My mother's face
