Chapter 1

The moment I signed the contract, my wolf howled in mourning.

Just then, my mate, Rhys, walked out of Chloe’s room.

I had to talk to him. I stepped in his path.

“Not now,” he said, cutting me off before I could speak.

He didn’t even look me in the eye. “I have to check the moonstone reserves with the Alpha. I need to personally test the energy in Chloe’s room tonight, make sure it’s enough to nourish her wolf.”

He rushed past me, distracted, and planted a quick, empty kiss on my forehead.

“Wait for me. Be good. This is for the pack’s honor. We have to take care of the hero’s orphan.”

Then he was gone.

I touched my forehead and forced a bitter smile.

I remember the day my wolf woke up.

My first shift was brutal. The pain of my bones breaking and reforming had me screaming.

I was writhing on the floor. I needed him.

But Rhys wasn’t there.

He was with Chloe at a human music festival.

It was the anniversary of her father's death, and he had to “distract her.”

I walked out of the gleaming new mansion.

My three suitcases were dumped by the door.

My mother pointed to the old Omega quarters at the edge of the woods. “You can stay in a guest room there for now.”

It was a building with no heat. No fireplace. Just bone-chilling cold.

“Mom, is there really no other room in the main house?” I gripped my luggage handle.

Her brow furrowed. “You used to live in the Omega quarters, didn’t you? Eliana, you’re the future Luna. You need to prove yourself. You can’t always be coddled.”

I laughed. A hollow, bitter sound.

Living in a freezing room was how I proved myself?

Ten years ago, I had my own room.

Then the Blood Moon War happened. Chloe, whose Beta father had died, had nightmares every night.

To comfort her, my mother moved her out of the Beta dorms and straight into my room.

And I was kicked out. Into the cold Omega quarters.

“It’s just for a little while,” she’d said. “Until she’s stable.”

A little while. Ten years.

Now, in the brand-new Pack House, they gave Chloe a bigger, better room.

And they completely forgot I needed a place to stand.

I didn’t argue. I dragged my bags to the Omega quarters.

The smell of mildew hit me the second I opened the door.

Damp. Just like ten years ago.

The windows were so small, no moonlight could get in.

The feast was held in the main hall.

The long table was loaded with roasted venison and sweet berry mead. All of Chloe’s favorites.

Jasper, red-faced, was telling the whole pack again how Chloe’s father had taken a silver bullet for him.

Rhys cut the choicest piece of venison heart from his plate.

He gently passed it to Chloe.

“Eat this. It will make you stronger.” His voice was so tender.

I sat at the very end of the table. In a corner.

My plate? A single, dry piece of rye bread.

No one even looked at me.

I stood up and went to the kitchen.

A sharp pain stabbed my stomach. I just wanted a glass of milk.

“What are you doing?!”

The kitchen door flew open. My mother stood there, furious.

“Everyone is out there listening to the story of a hero, and you’re in here hiding and drinking milk?” Her eyes were like ice. “You’re not just disrespecting a hero, you’re disrespecting Chloe!”

“Mom, they gave me one piece of bread tonight,” I said, my voice flat. “I’m hungry.”

“Eliana, don’t be like this.”

Rhys’s tall frame appeared behind my mother.

He frowned, his eyes blaming me.

“It’s a special day. Don’t throw a tantrum now.” He sighed, like I was a spoiled child. “You’ve always been so strong.”

Strong.

Because I was strong, I was supposed to choke down dry bread. Live in drafty Omega quarters. Watch my own mate give all his attention to another woman.

The mate bond spiked with sharp, suffocating agony. I slammed my mental walls shut, blocking him out. I pulled out my phone.

I looked at their righteous faces and suddenly felt so tired.

I picked up the glass of milk.

Tipped my wrist.

The white liquid vanished down the drain in a swirl.

My mother stared, shocked. I put the empty glass down.

“I won’t interrupt your hero worship.”

I walked past them without a word, out of the noisy mansion.

Back in the lonely Omega quarters, I shut the flimsy door.

The wind whistled through the window cracks, but I didn’t feel the cold anymore.

I tapped the screen on my phone.

A final confirmation from the Lycan Research Institute.

[Dr. Eliana, we look forward to your arrival in 20 days.]

I leaned against the damp wall, my heart set like stone.

If there was anything I was reluctant to leave behind before, it was gone now.

I didn’t care about any of it.

In twenty days, I would be gone from this pack for good.

And they probably wouldn’t even notice I was missing for a long, long time.

When I opened the door to my old home, I saw strangers.Or rather, familiar people who had become strangers. My mother’s hair was completely white. She looked twenty years older. My father stood behind her, stooped, his eyes hollow.Jasper was off to the side, his hands clenched into fists, knuckles scarred. He looked at me with a painful, pleading expression."Eliana…" My mother's voice broke on the first word. She fell to her knees, grabbing my hand, tears streaming down her face."I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, your mother is so sorry…"She sobbed, a raw, wracking sound, trying to purge a decade of regret.I looked at her white hair, at the dark circles under her eyes.I bent down and helped her up."Mom."Just that one word made her cry harder.Dinner was a few clumsy dishes on the table."This is... your favorite rosemary roast," my mother said, wiping her tears. "We tried our best, but it's probably not very good."I looked at the burnt edges of the meat. I felt a faint tremor in my he

The clinking of champagne glasses, and the host's voice rang out."For ten years of groundbreaking work on the Gene-Origin Project, the Chief Contributor Award goes to… Dr. Eliana."The entire hall stood and applauded.I rose. The Institute had tailored a gown for me, silver silk that flowed like liquid moonlight. The power inside me was calm and strong. I was no longer the girl who had to beg for bread.Halfway through the party, a figure cut through the crowd.Dressed in sharp, practical gear, her back straight, her eyes clear and steady.Chloe.She stopped in front of me and bared her neck in submission."Eliana. I'm sorry."Her voice was clear in the noisy hall."I took everything that should have been yours, and I was never brave enough to admit it."I looked at her calmly. "Get up, Chloe."She straightened, her eyes red but resolute."Thank you for leaving," she said. "The ten years you were gone... it was like a slap in the face that woke everyone up."I sipped my drink, listeni

As the first light of dawn crept into the room, a maid pushed the door open."Luna, you're here again."Aria blinked, pulled from her trance. She spent another night curled on the floor of the old Omega quarters. The cold seeped into her bones. Just like it had for Eliana. It was so quiet you could hear the single, looping thought in her mind.I drove my daughter away."Luna, you should eat," the maid said, holding a tray.Aria shook her head. "Leave."She stared at her hands. The hands that had soothed Chloe for a decade but had never once touched Eliana's hair. She laughed, and the laugh turned into a tear. The Moon Goddess's punishment. At the next Elder's council, Alistair's voice was unnervingly calm. "I have decided to pass the title of Alpha to Rhys, effective immediately."No one objected. In the years since Eliana left, his hair had turned completely white. He looked twenty years older than he was. He thought he was passing on a legacy, but all that was left was a joke.On the

"Dr. Eliana, please surrender all outside tech. Phones, trackers, everything."The Institute security officer was all business, her hand outstretched.I handed over my temporary phone."Last chance," she said, tapping the screen. "Confirm you want to erase communication permissions before checking for any pending messages."I stared at the small screen.[Inbox: 0 Unread Messages]I’d thrown my old phone away nineteen days ago. This new one was a temporary device from the Institute, active for only seventy-two hours. In seventy-two hours, not one person had sent me a message. Not my mother. Not my father. Not Jasper. Not Rhys.I thought it would hurt to see that empty inbox. It didn't.I smiled and pushed the phone back to her. "Erase it."She nodded. The screen went blank.I walked through the base's gates, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. The research facility was hidden deep in the mountains, completely cut off from the world. The pack guards found Eliana's old phone in the mud. The confirmation letter for a ten-year, closed-door research project with the Lycan Research Institute was the final blow."Connect me! Please, just connect!"Aria screamed at her own phone, her finger trembling on the call button. The screen lit up. A robotic voice from the Institute answered."Luna Aria, the Institute operates under Level One Alpha clearance." The cold voice ground every word into her soul. "All participant data is classified. Access denied.""I'm her mother!" Aria wanted to smash the screen. "I just want to know if she's okay!""I'm sorry, that information is not available."The call cut off.Aria stood frozen. Her phone fell from her hand with a clatter. She stumbled out of the main house and found herself in front of the Omega quarters again.Small windows, peeling paint, cold as a tomb. She pushed the door open. Empty. Not a single trace of her daughter left. She suddenly remembered. In the last ten years, she

The old Pack Seer stood in the middle of the main hall, leaning heavily on his cane.In his hand, he held the moonstone from the battlefield, sealed for ten years. The hall was dead silent.Rhys and Jasper stopped in their tracks.Chloe peeked down from the stairs, a flicker of unease in her eyes."I was reviewing the archives of the Blood Moon War. About the 'hero' you've all been worshiping."The Pack Seer didn't waste words. His dry finger tapped the moonstone.A beam of blue light shot out, projecting a scene into the air.The bloody battlefield from ten years ago appeared before them, terrifyingly real. There was no heroic last stand. No noble sacrifice. The projection showed Jasper, cornered by five enemy wolves at the edge of a cliff. At the last second, a lone wolf, a stranger, leaped from nowhere and took the fatal blow for him.And the man they had honored for a decade—Chloe’s father—was hiding behind a boulder. He saw the number of enemies, and his eyes filled with pure terr
