Chapter 2

Author: Frostveil
I rarely joined Camilla in her gatherings, as her friends all hated me and never bothered to hide it.

The sorry state I was in right now wasn't the first time I had been like this, and Caleb was always the one who started it every time.

The reason they didn't like me was simple—they thought I didn't deserve Camilla.

Camilla, Nathan, and the rest had known each other since they were young.

Nathan was like a shining star, being the heir to a wealthy family and always being number one in everything.

Meanwhile, I was a hearing-impaired commoner who only got to study in university due to a scholarship. Without my hearing aid, I couldn't even have a normal conversation with people.

Much like Nathan, Camilla had also been born into a prestigious family and was extraordinarily beautiful.

People like them were often thought of as being favored by the deities, so with them practically being a match made in heaven, they should've had a happy ending together.

However, fate decided that it wanted to play a cruel joke on them.

The Stenson family got in trouble, resulting in Camilla shouldering a heavy debt that had more zeroes than I could count. Because of that, Nathan also fled overseas.

From then on, the debt collectors weren't just Camilla's nightmare, but they became mine too.

Once, the debt collectors had beaten Camilla up till she was battered and bloody all over. Dragging her broken legs behind her, she had somehow crawled her way over to the convenience store I had worked at to beg me to save her.

Originally, I wasn't supposed to be on the night shift that day. Countless times after that day, I had felt thankful that my colleague had decided to switch shifts with me. I couldn't even begin to imagine what fate would've befallen Camilla if that hadn't happened.

I had hidden Camilla in the storeroom, then returned to my post. As the debt collectors followed the blood trail and entered the store, I saw that they were towering over me. When I insisted that I had no idea where Camilla had gone, they threatened to beat me up too.

Ripping off my hearing aid, I gathered my courage to confront them even as I called the police.

Worried about the trouble that I would bring them, they had instantly turned and fled the scene.

Only once I had confirmed that they were truly gone did I drag my trembling body over to check on Camilla, who had gone into shock from too much blood loss.

After passing over the shift to my colleague, I had sent her to the hospital and used all of the money I had on me to pay for her medical bills.

Upon waking up, she asked me who I was, and I learned that she had lost her memories.

Regardless, there was no way I would forget that it was she who had defended me when a group of people had once called me deaf and began throwing my hearing aid around. She had berated them fiercely before snatching my hearing aid back from them.

For the next three months, I had stayed by her side and carefully nursed her back to health.

The look in her eyes had slowly changed, from the cold indifference of staring at a stranger to that of dependence on someone familiar.

I helped her pay off her debts, bit by bit, and in a show of emotion, she had pulled me into a tight hug.

"Hendrick, once I finish paying off my debts, I'll throw you a grand and unforgettable wedding."

Subsequently, a cold sensation had brushed my skin as she had slipped a silver band around my ring finger. Pressing a kiss to my lips, she had promised that she would definitely replace the ring with an even bigger one in the future.

Eight years later, she had finally finished paying her debts, and we were finally about to get married, only for Nathan to return.

Camilla didn't give up even after leaving that day. She stayed back in Smallville and would appear at my shop every day with a bouquet, then order several of the pastries and remain there until closing time.It was truly quite a headache. When Elaine moved to chase her away, I waved my hand at her to stop her, telling her that I would simply treat it as extra income for the shop. This continued for the next two weeks until the shop suddenly stopped having any customers for several days in a row.One morning, I was in the kitchen, preparing the ingredients for the day ahead when Elaine called out to me, "Ricky, you should come and see this."After exiting the kitchen, I shot her a playful glare. This mischievous woman had switched to calling me "Ricky" instead of "Rick" ever since that day.The order printer was spitting out tickets non-stop. Even when the stream of order slips was over three feet long, it still didn't stop.Five minutes later, the printer finally stopped.I pic

I opened up a dessert shop in Smallville, a sleepy town whose inhabitants took things slow and easy. Because of this, the store's operating hours were only from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon.Slowly but surely, business grew for the shop. Unable to handle the workload alone anymore, I decided to hire someone to help me out. When I first started up this store, Elaine Goodman was a frequent customer who loved to sit down for hours as she typed away at her laptop. As time went by, we grew closer and more familiar with each other. Eventually, she told me that she had been having difficulty finding a job, and since I just so happened to need a helper, we swiftly came to an agreement.Like me, she also had impaired hearing. However, she was luckier than me in that her left ear was healthy. One day, I was busy in the kitchen when she told me that a customer was specifically requesting to meet me.I made a sound to acknowledge her words, then placed down the rolling pin I h

Only I knew that what was once broken couldn't be mended and that we hadn't actually reconciled. Beneath the calm waves surged a fierce current.Due to my hospitalization, my wedding with Camilla was pushed back three months. She began to search online for all sorts of wedding ideas, which she would then present to me."Honey, how about we hold it at the beach? We could parachute off a plane. That would surely leave a lasting impression on the guests."Excitement colored her voice as she spoke, as though she truly was looking forward to marrying me.Previously, I had been alone in handling all the details of the wedding. No matter what I asked her, she would always tell me to decide and that it was okay as long as I liked it.Either that, or she would brush me off with messages like, "I'm busy. Hendrick, stop bothering me with such small matters."Taking in her excited demeanor now, I made sure to respond with equal fervor, giving her more than adequate emotional feedback by agr

The next time I opened my eyes, I was already in the hospital.Camilla was sitting by my bed, and when she saw me wake, her eyes actually reddened.Dark shadows lined the area beneath her eyes, while her complexion was deathly pale. She looked completely different from her usual calm and composed self.Noticing the dazed look in my eyes, she pulled me into a tight hug."Hendrick, I'm so glad that you're okay. You truly gave me quite a scare. I'll revise my plans for the wedding and throw you another one, one even grander than the first."A tear slid from the corner of my eye without me realizing it. I didn't speak, for I didn't know what I could say. After that, Camilla kept watch over me for the entire duration of my stay in the hospital. It was as though all the work she had placed before me in the past was now no longer important. When I refused to let her come close to me, she curled up on the couch. It was a rather pitiful sight, her tall figure barely fitting in it.Every

The night of the gala, Nathan was also present. He was now Camilla's secretary, so it wasn't at all strange for him to attend as well.He was dressed in a form-fitting champagne suit today. When he spotted me, he deliberately straightened his tie, instantly drawing my attention to the ruby brooch pinned to his lapel.I recognized it as the auction piece Camilla had bought a few days ago for an exorbitant price. The final price she had paid far exceeded what it was actually worth, so the media outlets were claiming that she was doing it all to please her fiance.I dipped my head at Nathan and mouthed to him, "You're not worthy."That pissed him off greatly, but he couldn't throw a fit right there, as all of the city's elites and influential figures had come to this gala tonight. Everyone was dying to build a connection with Kevin, but Nathan certainly didn't dare do so.Camilla led me over to Kevin and his wife, her arm hooked through mine intimately."Ms. Stenson, you and your fi

That night, I told the butler that I was feeling unwell and wanted to retire early. After he delivered me a warm glass of milk, I instructed him to only come and wake me up the next afternoon. Then, before going to bed, I did something I had never done before—I called Camilla and exchanged sweet nothings with her for a while.Only once I had confirmed that she was indeed out on a business trip did I relax.Following that, I simply waited until everybody else in the house had gone to sleep before sneaking out of my room and heading downstairs in complete darkness.Since I wasn't bringing any luggage with me this time, it was much easier for me to move around.I had already bought my flight ticket to Morington yesterday and scheduled a taxi ride ahead of time, so the taxi should be waiting for me by the entrance to the back garden right now.I carefully made my way through the dark to ensure that I didn't make a single sound. Then, after climbing over the fence in the back garden,
