CHAPTER FORTY TWO

Lanaya probably would have spit out the meal she was chewing if not for Salvetti. She blinked rapidly to hide the tears that sickness had brought on. She winced as Mattheo stroked her arm with his while sipping her drink.

Her skin was very delicate. She felt she needed to free herself from her body and grip her skull. When Salvetti touched her knee, things had gone from bad to worse. She focused her whole perceptual apparatus on that one cluster of nerve ends. Incredibly, she was able to finish her meal without embarrassingly vomiting.

Mattheo adjusted in his seat, moving away just enough so he wouldn't accidentally touch her but close enough to be a presence. Despite her trembling arms, she took another mouthful while her mind was on Salvetto's touch. The feeling of sickness remained, albeit it was not as intense as before.
