Cole POV I had felt the tension rising in Jessica through our bond. Knowing she was in distress, I immediately excused myself from the discussions with a Beta from one of our allies and made my way upstairs. I had met Carson on his way, surprised that he was also heading towards our suite. “I just had a message from Marly that Elder Susan was in your suite, causing some issues,” Carson shared. Elder Susan was starting to become a pain in my ass. I wanted to believe she had good intentions, but I had to question her motives the more she inserted herself in our lives. She had naturally been invited to this evening’s ceremony. It would have been unusual had we not invited her. We were working with her, and she was an Elder with an ally pack. There would be no reason not to include her. I did not expect her to be upsetting Jessica before her celebration. I saw Elder Susan leaving our suite, “Wha
Jessica POV Everything was happening in a whirlwind. Marly had helped me select a dress that I hoped would be appropriate. We picked out shoes I hoped I would not fall flat on my face in. And were now getting our make-up and hair done. Marly had refreshments brought in, which I appreciated as I was starving. “Are you doing okay, babe?” I heard Cole ask me through our mind-link. I sighed, “As good as can be expected,” I replied. Cole chuckled, “I cannot wait to see you,” he stated. I felt a moment of nervousness. I hoped I would make Cole proud. “You always make me proud, Jess,” he commented before closing our link. I smiled as I tucked away that moment. Every moment with Cole was special; each one just more special than the last. “We are almost ready,” Marly squealed as I sat there facing away from the mirror. I had not been permitted to see make-up or hair since the women had started.
Jessica POV The next morning was Saturday, and we were having breakfast with Marly and Carson. Everly was sleeping in her baby chair. I was convinced if all babies were this perfect, I would want one of my own. She was so peaceful and that peaceful feeling surrounded you when you were near her. Marly seemed to be more excited than usual, and Cole seemed like he was smirking at her. As if they were sharing a private secret. It should not have bothered me, but the jealousness I felt was real. And it was embarrassing. I knew they had always been close friends, but being left out stung a little. “You are never left out, and I love that you are jealous,” Cole chuckled through our mind-link. I growled through our link, annoyed that once again I had not kept my thoughts private. I needed to keep that at the front of my mind. “I think it is time to tell her, Marly,” Cole said with a smile. “Finally
Jessica POV I stood there in shock, trying to process what I was hearing. “How do you even know she is still alive?” I asked, disbelief rolling over me. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a picture. She passed it over to me, “I get one every month. They are dated and are pictures of her in various situations, but they all show my daughter is still alive,” Susan replied softly. I took the picture with shaky hands and my heart sank. Any memories I had of my mother had been long lost. This picture is not how I wanted to see my mother for the first time after all these years. She had been beaten and abused. I could see the scars littering her body. Cole had stepped closer and was looking at the picture. “It looks like a newer dungeon,” he commented. “How do you know?” Susan asked, moving closer so she could also see what he was looking at. “Those right there,” he said pointing to the chains holding my abus
Jessica POV I took a step backwards as Elder Susan moved towards me. Cole stood beside me, his arm holding me up, so I did not fall. “What?” I whispered, as she stood with her hand lifted towards me. Her lower lip trembled, “I am sorry I did not tell you sooner,” she responded. “Why tell me now?” I questioned, as I felt anger start to surge within me. “I want you to fight, Jessica. For us, for your mother,” Susan replied. “My mother? Is she with you?” I bit out, feeling the betrayal within me. “No, she was lost to me long ago,” the Elder admitted. “Did you know about me all along?” I asked tightly. Susan looked uncomfortable and without her reply I knew. She had known all along that I was at my father’s, and she had never come to get me. “You knew what he was doing all along and you never cared enough to come for me?” I questioned, as tears filled my eyes. Shaking her head, “I knew you w
Jessica POV “Again, Jessica!” I heard Elder Susan shout in my ear. It had been a week since I had convinced Elder Susan and Marly that I could do this on my own. Today, I was not so certain. I was tired and bruised. No matter how fast Belle was healing me, I was still getting banged up. I knew Cole was concerned. If this was not as bad as it would get, I did not know how I would get trained enough to fight whatever was coming in a couple of weeks. So much was riding on this, and I knew it would be up to me to protect the pack, and potentially the wolves from other packs, from these beasts. I could feel Cole through the bond, he was feeding me his strength to get through this next fight. I was now training with the warriors. Elder Susan had decided that having real fights with real warriors was better than nothing. I was building strength and the odd time my powers would jump out. Some of my
Marly POV “It means somebody, in this case Rogues, are at our borders. Until we know why, they are considered to be a threat,” I shared with her. I snuggled in with Everly, wishing there was a way to break through to Jessica. Anything to help her come out of her shell a bit
Jessica’s POV I was embarrassed that Cole had seen my scars, but he had said they did not matter. We had returned to our room and were settled into bed. I hated to admit it, but sleeping with Cole by my side, made me feel safer and more content. Belle whispered in my mind, “Tou
Cole POV I looked to Jessica in awe, as she looked completely shaken up. Carson had already moved towards Marly and Everly, checking them both over. “The wolf never got near us,” Marly stated, smiling at Jessica. Jessica stood shaking in my arms. Likely adrenalin racing th
Cole POV I watched helplessly as Jessica panted through her shift. “What did you say?” she asked me. “I did not say anything?” I responded, hopeful that she might be hearing from her wolf. “Her wolf is starting to return,” Gunner, my wolf, stated excitedly.
