Chapter 5

Author: Northern Puppy
A woman's choked sobs filtered through from the other end of the line. "Blake, I-I got away… They're at an abandoned factory in the western suburbs… They all ran off… I'm so scared…"

"Don't be scared! I'm coming right now!" Blake's voice changed instantly. The cold, ruthless edge from just now vanished, replaced by a tenderness I'd never heard from him before.

"Are you hurt? Find somewhere safe to hide first." He was in such a rush to leave that he even forgot to hang up. He let go of my wrist and bolted for the door.

The blade slipped out of my flesh as he yanked his hand away, ripping the wound further open. A fresh wave of agony tore through me.

I lay helplessly on the bed and watched his back disappear through the doorway.

The comments froze for a second before exploding once again.

[Seriously? He left just like that?]

[Joanna's wrist is still bleeding!]

[Couldn't he have at least called an ambulance?]

[Is this what his so-called love is like? He can just hurt someone else without hesitation for Keira's sake?]

[How did I ever think he was devoted…]

I lifted my uninjured hand with difficulty, trying to reach the phone on the nightstand. My fingertips were shaking. The phone was only inches away, but it might as well have been miles.

The blood kept flowing. A large portion of the sheets was already dark red from my blood, but the stain was spreading wider and wider.

I clenched my teeth and used every last bit of strength to drag myself forward an inch. My fingers finally brushed the edge of the phone.

The comments went wild again.

[Come on! You've got it!]

[Call 911! Hurry!]

[Don't pass out! Stay with us!]

I unlocked the phone screen, but my vision was so blurry I couldn't make out the numbers. All I could do was press 9, 1, 1 from memory and hit the call button.

The dial tone rang in my ear. Once, twice…

My breathing was getting weaker, and more dark spots were eating away at the edges of my vision.

Then, the call connected. "This is 911 Emergency…"

My lips parted. I tried to speak, but I only managed to let out a gasp.

"Hello? Can you hear me? What's your emergency?"

I wanted to say I was at a hotel, that I was bleeding, that I was about to die. But it felt like something was lodged in my throat. I couldn't make a sound.

"Hello? Hello?"

The voice on the other end sounded farther and farther away. The phone slipped from my hand and landed on the carpet with a dull thud.

The comments went crazy.

[No, don't!]

[Somebody help her!]

[Where are the hotel staff? Did no one hear the commotion?]

[Screw you, Blake Stone!]

My consciousness was unraveling. Amid my daze, I felt like I floated upwards. I saw myself curled up in a pool of blood, my face as white as paper.

Then, I saw the comments again.

[Blake just picked Keira up.]

[She threw herself into his arms, crying.]

[He's comforting her and telling her it's okay.]

[She kissed him.]

[They're making out.]

[And Joanna's just lying here, bleeding out.]

The comments paused for a few seconds. Then, they started to shift.

[Suddenly, I just feel… sick to my stomach.]

[What did Joanna do wrong? She just loved the wrong person.]

[She gave her all for six whole years, too.]

[What gives Blake the right to treat her like this?]

[If she dies, then he's a murderer.]

[I want to see him regret this.]

[I want to see him grovel at her feet and beg her to forgive him.]

[But she might not live long enough for that.]

[Is there seriously no one who can go to the hotel to save her? I can't watch this anymore.]

The countdown timer was still on and flickering faintly. 8 days, 9 hours, 1 minute. The game wasn't over yet, but it looked like this player was about to get kicked out early.

Blake abruptly grabbed my hand. "You're not going to die! I've already contacted the best doctors. We'll go to them—there has to be a way…""Blake, it's pointless." I gently pulled my hand back. "This is my punishment for failing the romance strategy game. Neither of us can change the rules of the game."He froze. "Romance strategy game? What are you—"I smiled. "You don't need to know. You just need to know that for me, these past six years were only a dream. And now… it's time to wake up."He just stared at me, like he couldn't understand a word I was saying. Before my eyes, the countdown timer went on.10, 9, 8, 7…I stood up and walked to the railing. The sea breeze lifted my hair. At the horizon, the sky was turning pale. The sun was about to rise."Blake." I kept my back to him. "Promise me one thing.""Anything.""If I die, don't hold a funeral for me. Cremate me and scatter my ashes into the sea. I want… to be free to go anywhere I want."Blake's voice shook. "Anna…"

As I slowly lowered my hands, the lights faded, and the music cut off. The curtain fell. There was silence, then the applause crashed over me. I lay on the stage, gulping for air. My heart was pounding so hard that it felt like it would tear out of my chest. The countdown timer flickered like mad in my mind. 2 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes.I had two days left.Professor Cale rushed onto the stage and helped me up, tears spilling down her face. "Joanna, you were amazing. Absolutely amazing!"I hugged her and said softly, "Thank you, Professor. That was… my last performance."By the time I left the theater, the sky was dark. Blake was waiting for me at the door. He pulled off his mask, tear tracks still visible on his face."Anna," he rasped. "That scene…""I did it for you," I said calmly. "And for myself. Now, it's time for us both to take our bow and exit."He stepped forward, reaching for my hand. Then, he froze halfway. "If… If I'd figured things out earlier—""There are no if

Blake turned to look at me. "Anna, what I said was true. At least in the moment I said it, it was real."I looked at his red-rimmed eyes, suddenly finding him ridiculous. "Blake, do you even know what it means to love someone?"He fell silent."Loving someone means wanting her to be free. It means watching her soar higher. It means that even if she stops loving you, you respect her choice. It doesn't mean locking her in a cage, clipping her wings, and then saying, 'See? No one but me will ever want you.'"That's not love. That's possession. And you've never loved me. You just needed someone there to prove you could be loved and needed. That someone could've been me, or Keira, or any other woman willing to pull off this performance with you," I said.Blake's face slowly turned pale. He parted his lips to argue, but no words came out. Because he knew I was right. The comments floated past my eyes.[She's completely seen through him.][Blake has never ever loved a real person. He

"I don't regret loving you, giving up my career, or believing your lies. What I regret most is not slapping myself awake and walking out without looking back the day I found out the truth," I said evenly.I threw back the covers, got out of bed, and walked to the window. "Just go. I don't want to see you for the next five days. If I'm still alive in five days…"I turned to look at Blake with a small smile. "I'll see you in court. Intentional assault should be worth a few years, right?"All the color drained from his face. He stumbled back a step and had to brace himself against the wall to stay standing."Anna…" He called my name, his voice shaking. "Do we really have to end up like this?""You're the one who crossed the line first," I said. "The moment you put a knife to my wrist, there was no going back."He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened them again, something inside had shattered. He said, "Fine, I'll go. But I'm not giving up on you. I'll spend the res

"I started this stream today because I want to tell a story," I said. The live chat was going insane. Some pitied me, some doubted me, and some were just there to lap up the drama. All the comments flew past.I picked up my phone and pulled up a photo. It was of me from six years ago, standing onstage at my film academy's showcase performance with my costume on. My eyes had been bright and full of life."This was taken on my graduation day. That day, I played a woman who'd been imprisoned, who burned everything to the ground in the end. My advisor said I had real talent, and a producer wanted to sign me. But I walked away from all of that."I swiped to another photo. It had been taken on the day of Blake's proposal. I was tearing up as I nodded, and he slipped the ring onto my finger."Because the man I loved told me he would take care of me for the rest of my life. He said the entertainment industry was too filthy and wasn't for me. He said having him was enough."My voice staye

Keira burst into the room, her face pale and her eyes red. Without even sparing me a glance, she threw herself straight into Blake's arms. "Blake, I finally found you! The nurse said you were here…"She tipped her head up, tears sliding down at exactly the right moment. "Did you come to see Ms. Yarrow? I'm sorry. This is all my fault… If I hadn't been kidnapped, you never would've misunderstood her…"She turned to me and bowed her head. "Ms. Yarrow, I'm so sorry. I really didn't know Blake would treat you like that. If I'd known, I never would've—""Never would've what?" I cut in. "Never would've gotten yourself 'kidnapped' to some abandoned factory? Never would've cried so pitifully on the phone? Never would've kissed Blake the second you were rescued?"Keira froze.Blake frowned. "Anna, Keira is the victim here. How can you—""The victim?" I laughed. "Did you even look into those people, Blake? What were they doing before this? Why would they suddenly choose to kidnap Keira, of
