Chapter 2

Grant held his wine glass and raised his eyes to look at me.

His gaze paused for a moment on my diamond fringe earrings.

"Why the sudden change of earrings?"

"Sometimes I want to change things up."

I curled my red lips and calmly took my seat.

My new seat was three people away from him. The project coordinator from the streaming platform sat next to me.

I went from being the woman who shared his bed to a staff member running errands.

The hierarchy was made perfectly clear.

Halfway through the party, Calloway, a heavy-hitting investor, walked over with a glass of whiskey.

Eager to show off, Tessa stood up first and called out sweetly, "Mr. Calloway!"

Calloway's smile faded slightly.

Tessa didn't think that was enough.

"I heard your wife used to love this kind of yacht party. Why didn't she come tonight?"

The deck went silent for a moment. The smile on Calloway's face completely vanished.

His wife had passed away two years ago. Since the funeral, no one had ever mentioned those two words in front of him.

Completely oblivious, Tessa raised her glass again.

"I heard you're secretly acquiring a rival theater chain and planning to let Grant buy in."

This time, it was a pin-drop silence. The acquisition was highly classified. It was a make-or-break secret neither side could breathe a word about.

Calloway put down his glass. "The little starlet Grant brought along sure makes a great corporate spy."

Grant's face instantly darkened.

I picked up my champagne, stood up, and took over the conversation with a smile.

"Please don't take it to heart, Mr. Calloway."

"Tessa got confused. She heard about our brand endorsement negotiations for next quarter and mixed things up out of excitement."

I turned to him. "Isn't your new smart hardware brand looking for a global spokesperson?"

"Grant is willing to lower his current endorsement quote by thirty percent for a three-year exclusive. The contract will be on your desk at ten tomorrow morning."

His assistant froze for a brief second before nodding in immediate understanding.

Calloway raised an eyebrow. That was the product he wanted to push the most this year, and Grant was the highest-paid actor in North America.

He picked up his glass and clinked it against mine.

"Ms. Reese is always a pleasure to do business with."

A crisis that could have gotten the company completely blacklisted was resolved just like that.

But Tessa's eyes grew red. She shrank back into Grant's arms, looking wronged, and sobbed softly.

"I just wanted to help Grant build a better relationship."

"Does Reese think I'm stupid? Did she use all that jargon just to embarrass me?"

I nonchalantly swirled the ice in my glass.

She was the one who caused a massive disaster, and I was the one who came out to clean up the mess. Yet now, she was the one playing the victim.

Grant lowered his head and coaxed her with a gentle voice for a good while.

When he looked up at me again, the usual indulgence in his eyes hadn't changed.

"Play nice, Reese." He sighed, like he was coaxing a jealous child. "She just entered the industry. It's her first time at this kind of celebrity party. Mistakes are bound to happen."

"You've always been the most understanding one. Why did you have to embarrass her so badly in front of outsiders today?"

Hearing what he said, a memory from three years ago suddenly flashed through my mind.

Back then, it was my first time attending the Film Association dinner on his behalf. I only mispronounced one syllable of a producer's wife's last name.

Grant locked me in the hotel room and made me memorize the dossiers of every VIP for the entire night.

He stood behind me, pressing his fingers into my shoulders, and said in a low voice:

"The number one rule of being my woman is knowing your place."

"Doing things that embarrass me is a sign of not knowing the rules."

But now, an even more fatal mistake made by Tessa was dismissed as being innocent and straightforward.

It turned out his so-called rules had double standards depending on who it was.

"Mr. Superstar, I was just saving your botched deal."

"Do you need me to repeat the stakes to you again?"

All the warmth vanished from Grant's face. He even looked a bit terrifying. Seeing this, Tessa quickly grabbed his sleeve.

"Grant, let it go."

"Reese never liked me anyway. I'll just avoid her at the company from now on."

She put on a generous front, but her tears kept falling one by one.

People in the nearby booths were already whispering and watching the drama.

Grant used to hate it the most when women cried in public.

In the past, if my eyes even got slightly red, he would tell me to go to the restroom and compose myself before coming back out.

This time, he pulled a tissue and wiped Tessa's tears himself.

Then, he stared at me from across half a table full of champagne.

He poured a glass of warm water, handed it to me, and kept his voice low. "Reese, be a good girl."

"Apologize to Tessa."

Grant's POVAt the Annual Power List Financial Summit, the lights were blinding.I sat in the very last row of the venue, off to the side.No exclusive security, no VIP pass. On the temporary admission badge pinned to my chest, my name was printed very small.I stared at the center seat on the main stage, the ultimate symbol of absolute power.Sitting in it was Reese. She wore a sharply tailored haute couture suit. On her earlobes were still those dazzling diamond fringe earrings, the ones I had given her for Christmas three years ago. At the time, she had merely said a faint "Thank you."Facing the tough, tricky questions from streaming giants and Wall Street tycoons, she answered flawlessly."Reese, the outside world is saying your move this time is a massive gamble," someone in the audience held a microphone. "What if the merger fails?"She smiled, unhurried and calm. "The merger won't fail. Because I never place my bets on luck. I place them on the contract clauses."The hundred-mi

Three days later, my production company officially opened for business. On the East Coast, the building converted from an old theater hung a new sign at the door.Only when the guests had mostly dispersed did Grant appear. He didn't bring flowers, only a bound deal book.It compiled all the streaming copyright deals I had facilitated over the past five years. At the end of every high-stakes contract worth over a hundred million, it was officially stamped and signed with the name Reese. "The industry-wide announcements have been made." He spoke with a hoarse voice. "The entire industry will know that you were the one who did these.""Thank you."It was the first time I had said thank you to him since I left.In those eyes that were so accustomed to radiating charm on the silver screen, a faint, sudden glimmer of light flickered. "Reese, since the accounts are settled, can we get to know each other all over again?" "Not as boss and date, nor as client and agent.""Jus

On the morning of the hearing, I saw Grant at the bottom of the courthouse steps. He didn't bring a lawyer. He was holding that velvet box in his hand. The sapphire necklace."I fully accept all felony charges and commercial damages."I walked past him.He suddenly grabbed my wrist."If I pay back everything I owe you, can we start over?"I pulled my hand back."Grant, settling the bill only means you no longer owe me.""It doesn't mean I still want you."The heavy brass doors of the courthouse slowly opened outward. My lead attorney stood at the top of the steps waiting for me. And this once high and mighty superstar stood frozen in place, having lost the right to step into my territory for the first time. Grant's legal team had filed three consecutive motions for a pre-trial settlement regarding the defamation case. I outright rejected the first two without even looking at them. The third time, he promised to disclose all of the company's internal encrypted records t

There were seven leaked private recordings in total. In one of them, Grant aggressively ordered his subordinates to snatch the top magazine cover I had booked. In another, he could be heard saying:"Reese won't throw a fit for long. Cut her card, take her car, and she'll come back on her own." But the most fatal one was the final recording. Tessa was crying on the phone, asking him what would happen if the rumor-mongering was exposed. Grant said:"As long as I have you covered, absolutely no one in this industry will dare touch a hair on your head." Through malicious editing and splicing, the line sounded exactly as if he had protected her and orchestrated this humiliation against me from start to finish. Less than an hour after the recordings were broadcast on the gossip station, the production company's stock price took a nosedive. Several international luxury brands issued overnight statements announcing their contract terminations. Amid overwh

At dusk, Grant showed up at my door in person. He was holding a brand-new copy of the same vinyl record. It looked almost exactly like the out-of-print edition I had treasured for five years. Unfortunately, no matter how similar it was, it wasn't the original version anymore. "Let's talk." "You have ten minutes." For the past five years, whenever he was with me, I would always proactively pour him a whiskey on the rocks or untie his tie. But this time, I didn't even pour him a glass of plain water. He stood in silence for half a minute before speaking in a hoarse voice. "I've already kicked Tessa out of the mansion, and the FBI is investigating the encrypted drive." "I don't need a report on her fate." I pushed the transfer agreement for ten percent of the company's equity back across the table to him. "Take your shares and get out." "Do you think the shares are too little?" "I think getting dragged into your mess is too much t

The papers scattered all over the table and the floor.Tessa flinched in terror, shrinking her shoulders."But Reese left, and the company's core projects are all in chaos. I just wanted to prove that my commercial value is no less than hers!" Listening to her twisted logic, I almost laughed out loud on the spot. "Tessa, stealing a core encrypted drive, colluding with a shell company, and forging a hundred-million-dollar completion bond." "You proved it very successfully. At least when it comes to committing felonies, I am truly no match for you." Humiliated and enraged, Tessa snapped her head up and glared at me. "If a washed-up agent like you hadn't stubbornly clung to his side, would I have needed to make such a risky move?" "If you really had the skills of a Hollywood power player, you should have been able to keep the seat once you took it." Her face turned an ugly shade of blue, then sickly pale. "Didn't you sleep your way to the top with those old
