Chapter 3

Author: Shirley
When Grant's words fell, the entire deck went silent.

Eyes darted my way.

Some were gossiping, some were watching a show, all waiting to see how I'd talk my way out of this.

After all, everyone in this industry knew that Grant's Reese was ruthless and decisive.

I pushed down the coldness rising in my chest, slowly set down my wine glass, and kept my smile flawless.

"Grant Hale."

For the first time in five years, I called him by his full name in front of others.

"You know perfectly well who said the wrong thing just now."

"I know." His gaze didn't soften at all.

"You also know that I'm the one who salvaged Calloway's fifty-million-dollar investment along with that endorsement contract."

"It's not worth getting so angry over a mere fifty million."

He reached out, tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, and spoke softly. "Tessa is new here. You're usually so generous. Putting her on the spot in front of the entire inner circle today is really beneath your usual standard."

His words pierced me like a fine needle. Not fatal, but throbbing with pain.

So he knew everything. But even so, he still stood by her side.

Just like he had many times before.

Tessa grabbed his sleeve with red eyes.

"Grant, don't force Reese."

"She's so proud. How could she ever bow her head to me?"

This manipulative victim act put me right back on a guilt trip.

If I didn't apologize, it meant I was flexing my seniority after being with him for five years, unable to tolerate his junior rookie.

Grant had only a sliver of patience left in his eyes.

He pinched my earlobe, but his words left no room for refusal. "Reese, don't make this hard for me. It's just an apology. Be a good girl."

He looked at me like I was a troublemaker who had suddenly gone crazy and made him lose all face.

Tessa looked down, touched the sapphire necklace, and then glanced at my original seat.

"This is all my fault."

"I shouldn't have worn Reese's necklace, and I definitely shouldn't have sat next to you and made her angry."

"How about I take the necklace off right now and give it back to her?"

As she spoke, she pretended to reach for the clasp on her neck.

Grant immediately held her hand down.

"Things I give you don't need to be returned."

Then he took a deep breath, turned to look at me, wrapped an arm around my shoulder, and leaned close to my ear.

"It's just a seat and a necklace. They don't mean anything."

"It's all just for show, baby. Don't make a scene, okay? Let it go."

I lowered my eyes, my fingertips brushing against the diamond fringe by my ear.

So the position I had guarded for five years was something he could just casually give away.

And my heart for him was something he could just casually trample on.

"I'm not making a fuss."

"On the contrary, I'm making room for you two."

I pulled the VIP pass straight out of my clutch and dropped it cleanly into the wine glass in front of me.

"Since Tessa loves that center seat so much, let her sit there for good."

The card slowly sank.

"From now on, let her slowly learn how to handle those difficult producers. Let her cover up your scandalous affairs."

"Just don't come looking for me."

Grant stared at me, starting to panic a little. "What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said."

"Didn't you think I was making her look bad here?"

"Then from now on, I'm washing my hands of all your messes."

He laughed. "Reese, think about it. What right do you have to throw a tantrum at me?"

"The hillside mansion you live in, the limited-edition sports car you drive, aren't they all the best things I provided for you? I spoiled you so much, but not so you could go out and throw a fit over a rookie."

The executives around us gasped.

That sentence finally tore away the last shred of dignity.

I shrugged and nodded. "A perfect reminder from the great superstar."

"Since you want to keep score, let's settle up."

I took out my phone and dialed finance directly in front of everyone.

"Pull my commission statements from the five years I've managed him."

"Also, calculate every single cent of the luxury endorsements I secured for him, the high-stakes deals I negotiated, and the fifty-million-dollar contract I just saved tonight."

The finance person on the other end froze. "Reese, is this..."

"Cash me out."

Grant's eyes instantly darkened to the extreme.

"Reese, what exactly is wrong with you today? Why must you throw a tantrum and piss me off at an event like this?"

"Is calculating my rightful commission considered going crazy?"

I hung up the phone sharply and gave him a mocking smile.

"Grant, the one thing we can't put a price on is feelings."

"So if we strictly have a business relationship, let's follow the standard business protocols for the cash."

I picked up my clutch and decisively turned to leave the table.

When I reached the gangway, I looked back.

"Please have the bill settled before the end of the month."

Grant's POVAt the Annual Power List Financial Summit, the lights were blinding.I sat in the very last row of the venue, off to the side.No exclusive security, no VIP pass. On the temporary admission badge pinned to my chest, my name was printed very small.I stared at the center seat on the main stage, the ultimate symbol of absolute power.Sitting in it was Reese. She wore a sharply tailored haute couture suit. On her earlobes were still those dazzling diamond fringe earrings, the ones I had given her for Christmas three years ago. At the time, she had merely said a faint "Thank you."Facing the tough, tricky questions from streaming giants and Wall Street tycoons, she answered flawlessly."Reese, the outside world is saying your move this time is a massive gamble," someone in the audience held a microphone. "What if the merger fails?"She smiled, unhurried and calm. "The merger won't fail. Because I never place my bets on luck. I place them on the contract clauses."The hundred-mi

Three days later, my production company officially opened for business. On the East Coast, the building converted from an old theater hung a new sign at the door.Only when the guests had mostly dispersed did Grant appear. He didn't bring flowers, only a bound deal book.It compiled all the streaming copyright deals I had facilitated over the past five years. At the end of every high-stakes contract worth over a hundred million, it was officially stamped and signed with the name Reese. "The industry-wide announcements have been made." He spoke with a hoarse voice. "The entire industry will know that you were the one who did these.""Thank you."It was the first time I had said thank you to him since I left.In those eyes that were so accustomed to radiating charm on the silver screen, a faint, sudden glimmer of light flickered. "Reese, since the accounts are settled, can we get to know each other all over again?" "Not as boss and date, nor as client and agent.""Jus

On the morning of the hearing, I saw Grant at the bottom of the courthouse steps. He didn't bring a lawyer. He was holding that velvet box in his hand. The sapphire necklace."I fully accept all felony charges and commercial damages."I walked past him.He suddenly grabbed my wrist."If I pay back everything I owe you, can we start over?"I pulled my hand back."Grant, settling the bill only means you no longer owe me.""It doesn't mean I still want you."The heavy brass doors of the courthouse slowly opened outward. My lead attorney stood at the top of the steps waiting for me. And this once high and mighty superstar stood frozen in place, having lost the right to step into my territory for the first time. Grant's legal team had filed three consecutive motions for a pre-trial settlement regarding the defamation case. I outright rejected the first two without even looking at them. The third time, he promised to disclose all of the company's internal encrypted records t

There were seven leaked private recordings in total. In one of them, Grant aggressively ordered his subordinates to snatch the top magazine cover I had booked. In another, he could be heard saying:"Reese won't throw a fit for long. Cut her card, take her car, and she'll come back on her own." But the most fatal one was the final recording. Tessa was crying on the phone, asking him what would happen if the rumor-mongering was exposed. Grant said:"As long as I have you covered, absolutely no one in this industry will dare touch a hair on your head." Through malicious editing and splicing, the line sounded exactly as if he had protected her and orchestrated this humiliation against me from start to finish. Less than an hour after the recordings were broadcast on the gossip station, the production company's stock price took a nosedive. Several international luxury brands issued overnight statements announcing their contract terminations. Amid overwh

At dusk, Grant showed up at my door in person. He was holding a brand-new copy of the same vinyl record. It looked almost exactly like the out-of-print edition I had treasured for five years. Unfortunately, no matter how similar it was, it wasn't the original version anymore. "Let's talk." "You have ten minutes." For the past five years, whenever he was with me, I would always proactively pour him a whiskey on the rocks or untie his tie. But this time, I didn't even pour him a glass of plain water. He stood in silence for half a minute before speaking in a hoarse voice. "I've already kicked Tessa out of the mansion, and the FBI is investigating the encrypted drive." "I don't need a report on her fate." I pushed the transfer agreement for ten percent of the company's equity back across the table to him. "Take your shares and get out." "Do you think the shares are too little?" "I think getting dragged into your mess is too much t

The papers scattered all over the table and the floor.Tessa flinched in terror, shrinking her shoulders."But Reese left, and the company's core projects are all in chaos. I just wanted to prove that my commercial value is no less than hers!" Listening to her twisted logic, I almost laughed out loud on the spot. "Tessa, stealing a core encrypted drive, colluding with a shell company, and forging a hundred-million-dollar completion bond." "You proved it very successfully. At least when it comes to committing felonies, I am truly no match for you." Humiliated and enraged, Tessa snapped her head up and glared at me. "If a washed-up agent like you hadn't stubbornly clung to his side, would I have needed to make such a risky move?" "If you really had the skills of a Hollywood power player, you should have been able to keep the seat once you took it." Her face turned an ugly shade of blue, then sickly pale. "Didn't you sleep your way to the top with those old
