Chapter 1

I was superstar Grant's most obedient canary.

I never checked his phone, never asked about his late-night parties, and certainly never pushed for a title.

Whenever Grant was busy on set or lost in a lover's embrace, I never disturbed him.

When he needed someone to accompany him on the red carpet or at cocktail parties, I would show up right on time in four-inch heels.

I would soothe investors and smooth over scandals for him, my smile always sexy and perfectly appropriate.

Even Grant himself would often wrap his arm around my waist afterward and say:

"Reese, you are far more useful than those overpaid producers on my payroll."

Whether in bed or in the cutthroat Hollywood scene, we had always worked well together.

Until a starlet with zero boundaries appeared by his side.

She snooped through his phone, hitched rides on his private jet, crashed his executive meetings, and even cried at 3 a.m. to make him pick her up from some bar.

Instead of getting mad, Grant smiled and praised her for being pure and unfiltered.

The first time she attended an industry dinner, she stood right where Grant's date was supposed to be.

A producer reminded her that it was my reserved seat.

She simply pressed herself against Grant's arm and blinked. "Grant didn't say I couldn't sit here."

Grant simply stroked her curly hair and didn't make her get up.

Later, this girl blatantly moved into my hillside mansion, wore my dresses, and even threw out my five-year collection of limited-edition vinyls.

Then she lined up a row of limited-edition bags in the display cabinet.

She clung to Grant's arm, tilted her head, and asked me, "Reese, you've been with him in this industry for so long, you get how it works, right? I'm sure you don't mind."

Of course I understood, and I didn't mind anything at all.

I looked in the mirror and reapplied my lipstick. After all, Reese never lost her cool over a man.

I took off my simple pearl studs and put on a pair of flashy, provocative diamond fringe earrings.

The diamonds swayed by my ears, blindingly brilliant.

In this industry, you followed the rules that matched your status.

A kept woman could be gold-digging and vain, but she should never forget her place.

Too bad Tessa would never learn this lesson.

She thought Grant kept breaking the rules for her because she was more special than me.

She didn't understand that a man who broke the rules for you today could easily do it again for someone else tomorrow.

"Ms. Reese, the car picking you up tonight has temporarily changed its route."

On the other end of the line, Grant's assistant paused.

"The boss already boarded the yacht with Tessa. You'll have to take a cab there yourself."

I sat at the vanity table and clicked the final clasp of my fringe earring into place.

The diamonds brushed against my jawline. The coldness kept me awake.

"Alright."

I didn't even bother asking for a reason.

Whether he sent a car for me or not was entirely irrelevant.

The entire industry knew that this arrogant A-list actor had always despised those fake, bootlicking streaming execs.

For the past five years, his only job was to sit in the VIP seat looking unbothered.

I was the one who handled all the sweet-talking, profit exchanges, and resource trading for him.

As soon as I stepped onto the deck of the yacht party, the PR director rushed over, looking troubled.

"Reese, your seat has been temporarily changed."

I followed the director's dodging gaze toward the inner VIP area.

At the center booth on Grant's right, Tessa was holding a glass of champagne and whispering intimately in his ear.

A sapphire necklace hung below her collarbone.

It was the one passed down from Grant's grandmother. It was only worn at formal events to signify the woman in his life.

Just three days ago, Grant's assistant had delivered it to my dressing room, instructing me that I had to wear it tonight.

Now, it was hanging around Tessa's neck.

"Reese, you're finally here."

Tessa stood up and waved at me excitedly.

More than half of the industry bigwigs on the deck turned their eyes toward us.

"This necklace is so shiny, but it feels a bit heavy on the neck."

She stroked the massive sapphire, smiling innocently.

"Grant said the dress he picked out for me was too plain, so he told me to just grab something to match."

Whatever. I didn't care anyway.

It was just that a family heirloom marking his leading lady had become a cheap trinket she could casually grab, just like that.

Grant's POVAt the Annual Power List Financial Summit, the lights were blinding.I sat in the very last row of the venue, off to the side.No exclusive security, no VIP pass. On the temporary admission badge pinned to my chest, my name was printed very small.I stared at the center seat on the main stage, the ultimate symbol of absolute power.Sitting in it was Reese. She wore a sharply tailored haute couture suit. On her earlobes were still those dazzling diamond fringe earrings, the ones I had given her for Christmas three years ago. At the time, she had merely said a faint "Thank you."Facing the tough, tricky questions from streaming giants and Wall Street tycoons, she answered flawlessly."Reese, the outside world is saying your move this time is a massive gamble," someone in the audience held a microphone. "What if the merger fails?"She smiled, unhurried and calm. "The merger won't fail. Because I never place my bets on luck. I place them on the contract clauses."The hundred-mi

Three days later, my production company officially opened for business. On the East Coast, the building converted from an old theater hung a new sign at the door.Only when the guests had mostly dispersed did Grant appear. He didn't bring flowers, only a bound deal book.It compiled all the streaming copyright deals I had facilitated over the past five years. At the end of every high-stakes contract worth over a hundred million, it was officially stamped and signed with the name Reese. "The industry-wide announcements have been made." He spoke with a hoarse voice. "The entire industry will know that you were the one who did these.""Thank you."It was the first time I had said thank you to him since I left.In those eyes that were so accustomed to radiating charm on the silver screen, a faint, sudden glimmer of light flickered. "Reese, since the accounts are settled, can we get to know each other all over again?" "Not as boss and date, nor as client and agent.""Jus

On the morning of the hearing, I saw Grant at the bottom of the courthouse steps. He didn't bring a lawyer. He was holding that velvet box in his hand. The sapphire necklace."I fully accept all felony charges and commercial damages."I walked past him.He suddenly grabbed my wrist."If I pay back everything I owe you, can we start over?"I pulled my hand back."Grant, settling the bill only means you no longer owe me.""It doesn't mean I still want you."The heavy brass doors of the courthouse slowly opened outward. My lead attorney stood at the top of the steps waiting for me. And this once high and mighty superstar stood frozen in place, having lost the right to step into my territory for the first time. Grant's legal team had filed three consecutive motions for a pre-trial settlement regarding the defamation case. I outright rejected the first two without even looking at them. The third time, he promised to disclose all of the company's internal encrypted records t

There were seven leaked private recordings in total. In one of them, Grant aggressively ordered his subordinates to snatch the top magazine cover I had booked. In another, he could be heard saying:"Reese won't throw a fit for long. Cut her card, take her car, and she'll come back on her own." But the most fatal one was the final recording. Tessa was crying on the phone, asking him what would happen if the rumor-mongering was exposed. Grant said:"As long as I have you covered, absolutely no one in this industry will dare touch a hair on your head." Through malicious editing and splicing, the line sounded exactly as if he had protected her and orchestrated this humiliation against me from start to finish. Less than an hour after the recordings were broadcast on the gossip station, the production company's stock price took a nosedive. Several international luxury brands issued overnight statements announcing their contract terminations. Amid overwh

At dusk, Grant showed up at my door in person. He was holding a brand-new copy of the same vinyl record. It looked almost exactly like the out-of-print edition I had treasured for five years. Unfortunately, no matter how similar it was, it wasn't the original version anymore. "Let's talk." "You have ten minutes." For the past five years, whenever he was with me, I would always proactively pour him a whiskey on the rocks or untie his tie. But this time, I didn't even pour him a glass of plain water. He stood in silence for half a minute before speaking in a hoarse voice. "I've already kicked Tessa out of the mansion, and the FBI is investigating the encrypted drive." "I don't need a report on her fate." I pushed the transfer agreement for ten percent of the company's equity back across the table to him. "Take your shares and get out." "Do you think the shares are too little?" "I think getting dragged into your mess is too much t

The papers scattered all over the table and the floor.Tessa flinched in terror, shrinking her shoulders."But Reese left, and the company's core projects are all in chaos. I just wanted to prove that my commercial value is no less than hers!" Listening to her twisted logic, I almost laughed out loud on the spot. "Tessa, stealing a core encrypted drive, colluding with a shell company, and forging a hundred-million-dollar completion bond." "You proved it very successfully. At least when it comes to committing felonies, I am truly no match for you." Humiliated and enraged, Tessa snapped her head up and glared at me. "If a washed-up agent like you hadn't stubbornly clung to his side, would I have needed to make such a risky move?" "If you really had the skills of a Hollywood power player, you should have been able to keep the seat once you took it." Her face turned an ugly shade of blue, then sickly pale. "Didn't you sleep your way to the top with those old
