Kael's POV

I looked down at Banjo’s hands wrapped around my wrists. He was staring at me as if a ghost had suddenly taken my place on the sofa. "Who are you, Merinda?" he asked again, his voice cracking under the silence of the room. "What have you been hiding from me?"

I didn't answer. The herbal tea Jarrah had given me was still weighing down my limbs, but the sharp pulse of adrenaline in my veins burned away the worst of the fog. Slowly, deliberately, I pulled my wrists from his grasp.

"I'm tired, Banjo," I said, my voice barely a whisper, flat and drained of all feeling. "And you have a company to save."

Before he could grab me again, I forced my legs to move. I stood up and walked toward the private master room of the chalet. He didn't follow me. I could feel his burning eyes piercing into my back, heavy with unanswered questions and a sudden, terrifying panic, but he stayed on his knees in front of the fire.

I entered my bedroom, locking the door behind me. The quiet of the room swallowed me whole.

I didn't turn on the lights. Moving through the dark by memory, I walked past the oversized bed, past the wardrobe, and stopped in front of the mirror set into the wall.

I reached up, my hand tracing the smooth wood along the frame until my fingers caught the tiny, hidden pressure latch near the base.

Click.

The mirror swung forward silently, revealing a small, reinforced steel safe recessed directly into the stone wall behind it.

My fingers didn't hesitate. I entered a twelve digit biometric sequence, touching my thumb against the scanner. The heavy lock disengaged.

Inside sat a single item: a flat, black satellite terminal with an encrypted glass interface the physical key to the Kael Banking Syndicate. I lifted the device out of the dark.

For three long years, this tiny piece of hardware had remained dark, buried behind the facade of Banjo Vance’s obedient, humiliated contract wife.

I pressed the power icon.

The screen bloomed to life in the dark room, casting a sharp, deep blue light across my face. Lines of high security code scrolled rapidly down the glass before resolving into a single, high level administrative interface.

[IDENTITY VERIFIED: MERINDA KAEL]

[POSITION: SOLE INHERITOR & CHIEF EXECUTIVE - KAEL SYNDICATE]

[GLOBAL ASSETS: ACTIVE / RESTRICTED ACCESS]

[EUROPEAN MARKET PROXIES: PREPARED]

A silent tear slipped down my cheek, hot and stinging against my skin.

I touched the screen, pulling up the family vault ledgers. Rows upon rows of international debt, private banking reserves, and global equity funds flashed before my eyes a fortune that could swallow Vance Enterprises ten times over without missing a breath.

My father had built this network. And when our family was betrayed five years ago, leaving my father dead and our inner council fractured, I was forced into hiding. I had needed a secure, airtight cover in Switzerland to let the dust settle, to track down the hidden traitor who had orchestrated my father's downfall.

Banjo’s late father who owed my father his life had offered the marriage contract as a shield. Banjo had thought he was rescuing a penniless orphan girl. He had no idea he was giving shelter to the most dangerous banking heiress in Europe.

I had endured the cold stares. I had endured sitting at the table by the kitchen doors. I had endured watching him spend millions on Tahlia while treating me like a shameless parasite. I had endured it all because I needed the Vance shield until my syndicate's internal security was completely rebuilt.

Just forty eight hours left, I reminded myself, pressing my hand against my chest where my heart ached so fiercely. Just two more days of swallowing my dignity. Then the contract expires, and I can burn this cage to the ground.

Suddenly, the black glass screen on the terminal flickered.

A red alert banner slashed across the blue interface, pulsing with a silent rhythm.

[INTRUSION DETECTED: UNFAIR ACCESS ATTEMPT]

[LOCATION: VANCE ENTERPRISES CENTRAL SERVER - ZURICH]

[USER: EXECUTIVE LEVEL CLEARANCE]

My breath stopped. Someone inside Vance Enterprises was currently trying to bypass the Kael Syndicate's freeze order using a stolen master key code, a code that only two people in the world possessed.

One was my late father.

The second was the secret traitor who had betrayed my family five years ago.

I stared at the blinking screen, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs. The traitor wasn't hiding in the distant shadows of global finance. They were inside Banjo's company.

Baden The view from the top floor of the Lawson Tower overlooked the entire glowing grid of Zurich.Rain lashed against the floor to ceiling glass, blurring the distant lights of the city into soft, bleeding pools of gold and red. I stood in the dark office, a crystal glass of neat scotch resting in my right hand, listening to the soft, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.Down on the streets below, Banjo Vance's world was tearing itself apart at the seams.I took a slow sip of the amber liquid, feeling the sharp burn settle in my throat. For three long years, I had watched Banjo parade around Europe like a untouchable king, hiding his pathetic little marriage behind legal non-disclosure agreements while his father's company slowly ran out of real liquidity. He thought he was brilliant. He thought that by burying Merinda Kael in his shadow, he had successfully erased the debt his family owed to her dead father. He had no idea that every single move he made was bei

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Setting The Board

KaelThe leather seat of the limousine barely registered the cold against my fingertips before the sound of the engine wrapped around me like an embrace I hadn't felt in three years.Outside the rain slicked window, the neon lights of Zurich stretched out in streaks of red and yellow. Up on the hill, the shadow of Banjo's penthouse tower was speeding into the low storm clouds. He was probably still standing in that police basement, clutching the signed divorce papers while his corporate bank accounts bled dry.I didn't feel triumph. In fact, I'd expected an immense emptiness in the center of my chest, the weight of three wasted years and bruises that hadn't healed, and the bitter taste of the fact that to defeat a monster, I had to stop pretending to be a victim. The silver haired man sitting across from me, my father's most trusted advisor before the syndicate fell apart, silently reached forward. He placed a small black satchel on the table between us.Inside he'd placed a satellite

KaelThe red alert on the constable's tablet flashed over and over, painting the concrete room in a harsh, bleeding light.Emergency override verified: Tahlia Thorne Alias.Jarrah didn't say another word. His composure was gone, replaced by a pale, twitching silence as he backed away toward the open door, his fingers digging into his palms before he turned and vanished down the corridor. He didn't even check to see if I was following him. His careful trap was already turning into ash beneath his feet.Footsteps thundered outside, heavy and unsteady, until Banjo burst through the threshold. He looked undone. His tie was completely torn away, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck, revealing the ragged rise and fall of his chest. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with a chaotic mixture of panic and disbelief. The phone in his hand was buzzing constantly, displaying dozens of missed calls from the central reserve board, but he ignored it.He stared at me, then at the constable's ta

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Jarrah's Advice

KaelThe door of the private holding room clicked shut with a sharp ring. The high magistrate’s lawyer and the federal marshals had stepped out into the hallway to complete the clearance protocols but Banjo was no longer in the room. He had been practically dragged out moments earlier by his own frantic legal team after his phone blew up with urgent alerts from the Vance Enterprises emergency board.I was not alone, though.Standing near the corner of the room was Jarrah, he didn't look like a man whose conspirator had just been detained at the airport. His posture was as straight and immaculate as it had been during his thirty years of service to the Vance family. His face was a mask of perfect, icy calm, though a dark, calculating intelligence gleamed deep within his eyes."You played a dangerous card today, Miss Merinda," Jarrah said, his voice smooth, soft, and entirely devoid of his usual servant's deference.I turned my head slowly, looking at him from where I sat from. "You're

KaelA single bulb lit up the room, giving it that airy interrogating room. I sat on a hard bench, my hands resting in my lap. The handcuffs had been removed, but the red, marks on my wrists remained as a constant reminder of how I had been dragged out of the Vance estate like a common thief. The door unlocked, I didn't lift my head right away. I watched the rain dripping from the hem of my coat onto the floorboards.Banjo stepped inside. He didn't have his security team with him this time. He was alone. His face looked hollowed out the sharp edges of his jaw tighter than usual, his eyes bloodshot and shadowed by dark circles under his eyes.He didn't sit down in the chair across from me. He stood beside the table, resting one hand on the cold desk, looking down at me with a mix of icy detachment and a strange, flickering exhaustion."You look remarkably calm for someone facing twenty years in a Swiss federal prison, Merinda," he said, his voice rough, dry, and flat.I slowly raised m

KaelBaden Lawson’s voice faded into silence as Banjo ended the call, sliding the phone into his pocket. I watched him, he looked absolutely shocked with a hint of anger as he looked up at me."His secret partner," Banjo murmured, still in a daze, the words coming out in a low, shallow tone. "He was talking about your father's old contacts, wasn't he? You didn't do this alone. You brought your family's rot straight into my house.""Listen to yourself, Banjo," I shouted, my throat tight as I forced myself to stand up my legs were trembling, but I refused to stay seated while he looked down at me like a disgraced criminal. "Look at the paper in your hand. Look at the digital trail you're so eager to believe.""The trail is clean," he spat. "It leads straight to this room. Straight to your device.""It's too clean!" I stepped toward him, pointing at the scattered sheets on the bed. "Look at the timestamps on those bank transfers! Eight fifteen AM yesterday. The email sent to Baden Lawson
