Kael’s POV

The room spun around me in soft, blurry circles. The crackle of the fire sounded like a distant rush of water, and my limbs felt as if they were sinking deep into the velvet sofa.

Through the heavy haze, I saw Banjo burst into the parlor. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his bronze brown hair was completely disheveled. He stopped dead in his tracks, his broad chest heaving, his amber eyes wide with a strange, wild agitation as he looked from Jarrah to me.

"Merinda?" Banjo’s voice hit my ears, thick and distorted. "What's wrong with her, Jarrah?"

"She is simply exhausted, Master Banjo," Jarrah replied, his tone smooth, warm, and entirely steady. "The events at the gala were far too heavy for her delicate constitution. I merely offered her a warm cup of herbal tea to help her sleep."

Banjo took two heavy steps toward me, his face tight with a conflict I couldn't understand. But as my eyelids grew heavier and the darkness pulled at the edges of my mind, the scent of the tea carried me backward three years into the past.

Three years ago, the room had smelled of polished mahogany, crisp legal paper, and stale rain.

I was twenty-three years old, sitting across a massive glass conference desk in the top-floor penthouse of Vance Enterprises in Zurich. Outside, the Swiss sky was grey, dumping a steady sleet over the city.

Across from me sat Banjo Vance.

He was twenty-eight then younger, but already carrying the cold, terrifying authority of a man who owned empires. He hadn't looked at me as a human being. He looked at me like a problem his legal department needed to solve before lunch.

Between us lay a thick, leather-bound document stamped with black wax seals: THE SPOUSAL AGREEMENT & FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT.

"Read it carefully, Merinda," Banjo had said, his voice flat, icy, and entirely devoid of life. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his long legs. "I don't like repeating myself, and I certainly don't like excuses."

With trembling hands, I opened the first page.

The terms weren't just strict; they were designed to erase my very existence.

Section 1.2: Public Identity.

The Spouse shall make no public claims to the Vance name, legacy, or corporate holdings. The Marriage shall remain undisclosed to international media outlets, high society gatherings, and private financial circles unless explicitly authorized by Banjo Vance.

Section 4.1: Asset & Inheritance Forfeiture.

The Spouse explicitly waives all legal rights to present, past, or future capital belonging to Vance Enterprises or the Vance Family Trust. Upon dissolution of this contract, the Spouse shall depart with zero financial claims, properties, or equity.

Section 8.5: Absolute Compliance.

The Spouse agrees to maintain absolute obedience regarding household management, residence locations, and public appearances. Any act of public insubordination or disruption to the personal/professional reputation of Banjo Vance shall constitute an immediate breach, resulting in severe financial penalties levied against the Spouse's familial estate.

My breath got uneasy as I read those brutal words. I lifted my eyes to look at him. My father’s banking syndicate had gone dark, forced into hiding after a massive global betrayal, leaving me completely isolated. To keep my family's true identity hidden from our enemies, I needed a legally bulletproof cover in Europe. Banjo’s father had arranged this marriage on his deathbed to clear a debt he owed my family, but Banjo didn't know that.

To Banjo, I was just a desperate girl whose family begged for his protection.

"This isn't a marriage contract, Banjo," I had whispered three years ago, my voice shaking. "This is a cage. You're asking me to sign away my voice, my dignity, and my freedom."

Banjo had leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, his amber eyes locking onto mine like two burning coals.

"You want my protection, Merinda? You want the safety of the Vance name to shield you from whatever mess your family left behind?" He picked up a heavy black fountain pen and clicked it open, sliding it toward me. "Then this is the price. I don't love you. I will never love you. My heart belongs to someone else, and this contract ensures you never forget that. You obey me, you keep quiet, and you stay out of my way."

He had reached across the table, his fingers gripping my wrist with a firm, cold force, forcing the pen into my hand.

"Sign it," he had growled low in his throat. "Or walk out that door right now and face the world alone."

Desperate, terrified, and having no other choice to protect my hidden legacy, I had lowered the pen to the paper. My hands shook as I signed my name line by line, binding myself into a gold plated prison under the thumb of a man who looked at me with pure disdain.

The memory shattered like cheap glass, pulling me back to the present.

My eyes fluttered open. I was still on the sofa in the St. Moritz chalet. The fireplace was dying down to red embers.

Banjo was kneeling right in front of me on the rug. His heavy hands were holding mine his warm, calloused fingers gripping my cold wrists with a desperate, trembling tightness that felt completely alien compared to his usual cold touch.

"Merinda" he choked out, his voice raw, rough, and breaking at the edges. "Look at me. Please."

I forced my heavy gaze up to meet his. His dark amber eyes were red rimmed, bloodshot, and filled with an agonizing, chaotic storm of pain, confusion, and something that looked terrifyingly like regret.

"The accounts" Banjo whispered, his grip on my hands tightening until it almost hurt. "The Swiss board just confirmed it. The freeze on Vance Enterprises wasn't a corporate attack from an enemy."

He leaned closer, his rugged jaw shadowed by dark stubble, his warm breath fanning across my pale skin as he stared into my eyes with sheer, unadulterated shock.

"The signature that authorized the freeze.

It was your family's master seal. Who are you, Merinda? What have you been hiding from me for three years?”

Baden The view from the top floor of the Lawson Tower overlooked the entire glowing grid of Zurich.Rain lashed against the floor to ceiling glass, blurring the distant lights of the city into soft, bleeding pools of gold and red. I stood in the dark office, a crystal glass of neat scotch resting in my right hand, listening to the soft, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.Down on the streets below, Banjo Vance's world was tearing itself apart at the seams.I took a slow sip of the amber liquid, feeling the sharp burn settle in my throat. For three long years, I had watched Banjo parade around Europe like a untouchable king, hiding his pathetic little marriage behind legal non-disclosure agreements while his father's company slowly ran out of real liquidity. He thought he was brilliant. He thought that by burying Merinda Kael in his shadow, he had successfully erased the debt his family owed to her dead father. He had no idea that every single move he made was bei

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Setting The Board

KaelThe leather seat of the limousine barely registered the cold against my fingertips before the sound of the engine wrapped around me like an embrace I hadn't felt in three years.Outside the rain slicked window, the neon lights of Zurich stretched out in streaks of red and yellow. Up on the hill, the shadow of Banjo's penthouse tower was speeding into the low storm clouds. He was probably still standing in that police basement, clutching the signed divorce papers while his corporate bank accounts bled dry.I didn't feel triumph. In fact, I'd expected an immense emptiness in the center of my chest, the weight of three wasted years and bruises that hadn't healed, and the bitter taste of the fact that to defeat a monster, I had to stop pretending to be a victim. The silver haired man sitting across from me, my father's most trusted advisor before the syndicate fell apart, silently reached forward. He placed a small black satchel on the table between us.Inside he'd placed a satellite

His composure was gone, replaced by a pale, twitching silence as he backed away toward the open door, his fingers digging into his palms before he turned and vanished down the corridor. He didn't even check to see if I was following him. His careful trap was already turning into ash beneath his feet.Footsteps thundered outside, heavy and unsteady, until Banjo burst through the threshold. He looked undone. His tie was completely torn away, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck, revealing the ragged rise and fall of his chest. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with a chaotic mixture of panic and disbelief. The phone in his hand was buzzing constantly, displaying dozens of missed calls from the central reserve board, but he ignored it.He stared at me, then at the constable's ta

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Jarrah's Advice

KaelThe door of the private holding room clicked shut with a sharp ring. The high magistrate’s lawyer and the federal marshals had stepped out into the hallway to complete the clearance protocols but Banjo was no longer in the room. He had been practically dragged out moments earlier by his own frantic legal team after his phone blew up with urgent alerts from the Vance Enterprises emergency board.I was not alone, though.Standing near the corner of the room was Jarrah, he didn't look like a man whose conspirator had just been detained at the airport. His posture was as straight and immaculate as it had been during his thirty years of service to the Vance family. His face was a mask of perfect, icy calm, though a dark, calculating intelligence gleamed deep within his eyes."You played a dangerous card today, Miss Merinda," Jarrah said, his voice smooth, soft, and entirely devoid of his usual servant's deference.I turned my head slowly, looking at him from where I sat from. "You're

KaelA single bulb lit up the room, giving it that airy interrogating room. I sat on a hard bench, my hands resting in my lap. The handcuffs had been removed, but the red, marks on my wrists remained as a constant reminder of how I had been dragged out of the Vance estate like a common thief. The door unlocked, I didn't lift my head right away. I watched the rain dripping from the hem of my coat onto the floorboards.Banjo stepped inside. He didn't have his security team with him this time. He was alone. His face looked hollowed out the sharp edges of his jaw tighter than usual, his eyes bloodshot and shadowed by dark circles under his eyes.He didn't sit down in the chair across from me. He stood beside the table, resting one hand on the cold desk, looking down at me with a mix of icy detachment and a strange, flickering exhaustion."You look remarkably calm for someone facing twenty years in a Swiss federal prison, Merinda," he said, his voice rough, dry, and flat.I slowly raised m

KaelBaden Lawson’s voice faded into silence as Banjo ended the call, sliding the phone into his pocket. I watched him, he looked absolutely shocked with a hint of anger as he looked up at me."His secret partner," Banjo murmured, still in a daze, the words coming out in a low, shallow tone. "He was talking about your father's old contacts, wasn't he? You didn't do this alone. You brought your family's rot straight into my house.""Listen to yourself, Banjo," I shouted, my throat tight as I forced myself to stand up my legs were trembling, but I refused to stay seated while he looked down at me like a disgraced criminal. "Look at the paper in your hand. Look at the digital trail you're so eager to believe.""The trail is clean," he spat. "It leads straight to this room. Straight to your device.""It's too clean!" I stepped toward him, pointing at the scattered sheets on the bed. "Look at the timestamps on those bank transfers! Eight fifteen AM yesterday. The email sent to Baden Lawson
