Kael

The red alert on the constable's tablet flashed over and over, painting the concrete room in a harsh, bleeding light.

Emergency override verified: Tahlia Thorne Alias.

Jarrah didn't say another word. His composure was gone, replaced by a pale, twitching silence as he backed away toward the open door, his fingers digging into his palms before he turned and vanished down the corridor. He didn't even check to see if I was following him. His careful trap was already turning into ash beneath his feet.

Footsteps thundered outside, heavy and unsteady, until Banjo burst through the threshold.

He looked undone. His tie was completely torn away, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck, revealing the ragged rise and fall of his chest. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with a chaotic mixture of panic and disbelief. The phone in his hand was buzzing constantly, displaying dozens of missed calls from the central reserve board, but he ignored it.

He stared at me, then at the constable's tablet, his face drained of every drop of color.

"What is that?" Banjo choked out, his voice cracking as he took a step into the room. "What did you just do to the central vault?"

"I didn't do anything, Banjo," I said. My voice was no longer loud or angry. It was so quiet, so flat, that it seemed to freeze the humid air between us. "Your little angel just took fifty million dollars of your reserve gold using the backdoor access Jarrah built for her."

"You're lying!" he roared, but the sound lacked conviction. It was the desperate, hollow yell of a man watching his world split open at his feet. "Tahlia is in the chalet! She's sick! She wouldn't"

"Look at the screen, Banjo," I whispered, pointing a single, steady finger at the flashing red tablet. "Look at the biometric string. It's her retina print. It's her personal offshore alias."

Banjo grabbed the tablet from the constable's shaking hands. His eyes scanned the lines of glowing data, line by line, code by code. As the truth finally forced its way past his denial, I watched something die behind his eyes. The arrogance, the cold certainty, the unyielding pride it all crumbled into a hollow, terrifying blankness.

He didn't speak. He just stood there, holding the tablet as if it were made of lead, his breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps.

I turned my back on him and looked down at the metal table.

The revised divorce decree and the land release form for St. Judes were still sitting there, Jarrah had been right about one thing: a martyr in chains achieves nothing. As long as I remained tied to Banjo Vance by a legal document and a marital title, I was just a target for his blind foolishness and Tahlia's poison.

I picked up the fountain pen.

"Merinda" Banjo's voice was a broken whisper behind me. He sounded small, terrified, and utterly lost. "Wait don't"

I uncapped the pen with a slow, deliberate click.

I didn't hesitate. With a smooth, terrifying grace, I pressed the dark nib to the paper. The ink flowed smoothly across the white page as I signed my full legal name Merinda Kael on the line marked for the wife's consent.

I turned the page over to the land release form, the document that handed my mother's ancestral soil, St. Judes, over to Vance Holdings. I signed that one too. Every stroke of the pen was firm, steady, and sharp as a scalpel. I was signing away my past, my home, and the three nightmare years I had bled into this family.

The heavy silence in the room was deafening as the last line of ink dried against the paper.

I set the pen down gently on the metal surface. I picked up the signed documents, squared the edges against the table, and turned around to face Banjo.

He was standing less than two feet away, looking down at the papers in my hand as if they were a death warrant. His hands trembled at his sides.

I stepped closer, until I was looking him dead in his bloodshot, shattered eyes.

"Here is your freedom, Banjo," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal weight that made him flinch. "Here is the land deed you traded your soul for. Take it."

I slammed the folder hard against his chest.

Banjo reflexively caught it, his fingers clutching the leather as tears finally spilled over his lower lashes, tracking down his pale, bruised cheeks. "Merinda please listen to me"

"No," I cut him off, leaning in close until my breath brushed his ear. "You listen to me, Banjo Vance. You gave up the only person who was ever honest with you for a snake who just stripped you bare. You humiliated me. You slapped me. You dragged my name through the dirt to protect a lie."

I pulled back, looking into his hollow face with a smile so cold, so devoid of warmth, that his breath hitched for a second.

"Enjoy your victory, Banjo," I promised, every word sharp enough to draw blood. "Because I am going to watch you burn this empire to the ground with your own hands and I promise you will regret every single stroke of that pen for the rest of your miserable life."

I didn't wait for his answer. I brushed past him walking straight toward the open door of the holding room.

The federal marshals stepped aside, clearing a path for me through the dark hallway of the police station. I pushed open the exit doors, stepping out into the cold, pouring rain of Zurich as a free woman.

A sleek, black limousine with tinted windows pulled up to the curb right in front of me.

The rear door swung open from the inside. Sitting in the dark leather interior was a tall, silver haired man holding an open satellite phone.

"Welcome back, Lady Merinda," the man said smoothly, offering his hand. "The Syndicate council is waiting and your father left you one final key.”

Baden The view from the top floor of the Lawson Tower overlooked the entire glowing grid of Zurich.Rain lashed against the floor to ceiling glass, blurring the distant lights of the city into soft, bleeding pools of gold and red. I stood in the dark office, a crystal glass of neat scotch resting in my right hand, listening to the soft, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.Down on the streets below, Banjo Vance's world was tearing itself apart at the seams.I took a slow sip of the amber liquid, feeling the sharp burn settle in my throat. For three long years, I had watched Banjo parade around Europe like a untouchable king, hiding his pathetic little marriage behind legal non-disclosure agreements while his father's company slowly ran out of real liquidity. He thought he was brilliant. He thought that by burying Merinda Kael in his shadow, he had successfully erased the debt his family owed to her dead father. He had no idea that every single move he made was bei

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Setting The Board

KaelThe leather seat of the limousine barely registered the cold against my fingertips before the sound of the engine wrapped around me like an embrace I hadn't felt in three years.Outside the rain slicked window, the neon lights of Zurich stretched out in streaks of red and yellow. Up on the hill, the shadow of Banjo's penthouse tower was speeding into the low storm clouds. He was probably still standing in that police basement, clutching the signed divorce papers while his corporate bank accounts bled dry.I didn't feel triumph. In fact, I'd expected an immense emptiness in the center of my chest, the weight of three wasted years and bruises that hadn't healed, and the bitter taste of the fact that to defeat a monster, I had to stop pretending to be a victim. The silver haired man sitting across from me, my father's most trusted advisor before the syndicate fell apart, silently reached forward. He placed a small black satchel on the table between us.Inside he'd placed a satellite

  • Resurrected Vengeance    Jarrah's Advice

KaelThe door of the private holding room clicked shut with a sharp ring. The high magistrate’s lawyer and the federal marshals had stepped out into the hallway to complete the clearance protocols but Banjo was no longer in the room. He had been practically dragged out moments earlier by his own frantic legal team after his phone blew up with urgent alerts from the Vance Enterprises emergency board.I was not alone, though.Standing near the corner of the room was Jarrah, he didn't look like a man whose conspirator had just been detained at the airport. His posture was as straight and immaculate as it had been during his thirty years of service to the Vance family. His face was a mask of perfect, icy calm, though a dark, calculating intelligence gleamed deep within his eyes."You played a dangerous card today, Miss Merinda," Jarrah said, his voice smooth, soft, and entirely devoid of his usual servant's deference.I turned my head slowly, looking at him from where I sat from. "You're

KaelA single bulb lit up the room, giving it that airy interrogating room. I sat on a hard bench, my hands resting in my lap. The handcuffs had been removed, but the red, marks on my wrists remained as a constant reminder of how I had been dragged out of the Vance estate like a common thief. The door unlocked, I didn't lift my head right away. I watched the rain dripping from the hem of my coat onto the floorboards.Banjo stepped inside. He didn't have his security team with him this time. He was alone. His face looked hollowed out the sharp edges of his jaw tighter than usual, his eyes bloodshot and shadowed by dark circles under his eyes.He didn't sit down in the chair across from me. He stood beside the table, resting one hand on the cold desk, looking down at me with a mix of icy detachment and a strange, flickering exhaustion."You look remarkably calm for someone facing twenty years in a Swiss federal prison, Merinda," he said, his voice rough, dry, and flat.I slowly raised m

KaelBaden Lawson’s voice faded into silence as Banjo ended the call, sliding the phone into his pocket. I watched him, he looked absolutely shocked with a hint of anger as he looked up at me."His secret partner," Banjo murmured, still in a daze, the words coming out in a low, shallow tone. "He was talking about your father's old contacts, wasn't he? You didn't do this alone. You brought your family's rot straight into my house.""Listen to yourself, Banjo," I shouted, my throat tight as I forced myself to stand up my legs were trembling, but I refused to stay seated while he looked down at me like a disgraced criminal. "Look at the paper in your hand. Look at the digital trail you're so eager to believe.""The trail is clean," he spat. "It leads straight to this room. Straight to your device.""It's too clean!" I stepped toward him, pointing at the scattered sheets on the bed. "Look at the timestamps on those bank transfers! Eight fifteen AM yesterday. The email sent to Baden Lawson
