Seraphine POV

I heard the glass shatter before I saw who it belonged to, and some quiet, satisfied part of me already knew.

I kept my expression exactly where I'd trained it to stay, calm, pleasant, unreadable, while two hundred pairs of eyes tracked the sound to its source and found Adrian Hayes standing frozen near the center of the ballroom, champagne pooling around his shoes, his face drained of every ounce of color it had held thirty seconds earlier.

Five years. I had waited five years for this exact moment, had rehearsed it in my head more times than I could count, standing in front of Diego's cracked bathroom mirror at two in the morning, in the back of black cars between meetings, in the quiet hour before sleep when the old fear still sometimes crept back in no matter how much armor I'd built over it.

I had expected to feel something enormous. Rage, maybe. Grief, still raw somewhere underneath everything else. Some part of me had even prepared for the possibility I'd feel nothing at all, that five years of discipline had finally burned away whatever used to live in that hollow space Adrian left behind.

Instead, watching him stand there, pale and shaking, mouthing words I couldn't hear from this distance but could read easily enough on his lips, I felt something far simpler than any of that.

Satisfaction.

"Thank you," I said again into the microphone, my voice carrying smooth and even across the room like none of it had happened, like a man across the ballroom hadn't just dropped a glass staring at me like I'd crawled up out of the grave he'd put me in. "Vale Empire wouldn't exist without the people in this room, whether as partners, as competitors, or simply as the market I've spent five years learning to outmaneuver. I look forward to speaking with many of you personally before the evening ends."

Scattered applause rose again, warmer this time, cameras still flashing in steady bursts along the edges of the stage. I stepped back from the podium with a small, practiced nod, and the communications director moved smoothly to close out the introduction while I turned and walked back through the tall doors I'd entered from, my heels silent against the marble, my spine perfectly straight the entire way.

The moment the doors shut behind me, sealing off the roar of the ballroom, I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"You did that beautifully," Diego said, stepping out of the shadow beside the door where he'd been watching the entire thing on the small monitor set up for security. "Steady voice. Steady hands. Nobody in that room would have guessed you were nervous."

"I wasn't nervous."

"Your pulse says otherwise." He nodded toward my wrist, where I realized my own fingers had wrapped tightly around it without my noticing. "It's alright to feel something, Seraphine. Five years of planning just walked through those doors and hit its mark exactly the way you wanted it to."

I looked down at my hand, unclenching it slowly, and thought about the sound of that glass shattering, the way his face had drained of color like someone had reached inside him and pulled the blood out through his feet.

"He said something," I said quietly. "I couldn't hear it from the stage, but I could read it. He said I'm dead. He said he buried me."

"He did bury you," Diego said, something dark moving behind his usually careful expression. "An empty casket, a headstone with your name on it, a funeral he stood through without shedding a single tear, if the photographs from back then are anything to go by."

I hadn't seen those photographs. I'd never asked to. Some things I'd decided a long time ago weren't worth the weight of carrying.

"I want eyes on him for the rest of the night," I said, already moving down the hallway toward the private room set aside for exactly this purpose, a place to breathe between the performance and whatever came next. "Not obvious. Nothing that spooks him. I just want to know who he talks to, what he says, whether Mira leaves his side even once."

"Already handled." Diego fell into step beside me, close enough that I caught the familiar scent of him, something clean and steady that had become one of the few constants in a life built almost entirely on reinvention. "There's something else you should know before you go back out there."

I stopped walking. "What."

"Mira's been asking questions for three weeks. Quietly. A private investigator, low profile but not sloppy. Nothing's turned up anything real yet, our paper trail is too clean for that, but she's not going to stop just because tonight didn't give her what she wanted."

Something cold settled low in my stomach, an old familiar feeling I recognized instantly even after all these years, the particular dread of being watched by someone who wanted to take something from you.

"Let her look," I said finally, straightening my shoulders again, feeling the armor slide back into place piece by piece. "She spent five years building a life on top of a lie she helped create. I intend to make sure the ground underneath it finally cracks."

Diego studied me for a long moment, something unreadable in his expression.

"That's not just business talk anymore, is it."

"No," I admitted. "It stopped being just business the moment I saw his face tonight."

He didn't say anything else, just reached out and adjusted the strap of my gown where it had shifted slightly during the walk, an old habit of his, careful and unhurried, the way he'd always touched me since the night everything changed. Through the closed doors behind us, the low murmur of the ballroom carried on, unaware that somewhere in the crowd, a man was still standing frozen in a puddle of spilled champagne, staring at the doors I'd just walked through like he expected them to open again and prove he hadn't lost his mind.

"You should eat something before you go back out there," Diego said, nodding toward the small spread of food laid out on the sideboard, untouched. "You didn't eat before we left tonight either."

"I wasn't hungry."

"You're never hungry the day something matters." He said it lightly, but there was an edge underneath it, the same quiet worry he'd carried for five years now, tucked so far beneath his composure most people never noticed it was there. I noticed. I'd made a habit of noticing everything about Diego Steel a long time ago, even the parts I'd never let myself examine too closely, because examining them meant admitting how much of my new life had been built on the steady, unshakable fact of him standing beside me.

"I'll eat after," I said. "Once tonight is over."

"Promise?"

"Since when do I break promises to you?"

Something softened in his expression at that, brief and unguarded in a way he rarely allowed himself to be, before the careful mask slid back into place, the one he wore whenever he remembered exactly how many people in that ballroom would love nothing more than to find a crack in either of us to exploit.

"He's going to come looking for you tonight," Diego said quietly. "You know that."

"I'm counting on it."

The door behind us opened before either of us could say anything else, and one of the event coordinators leaned in, slightly breathless.

"Miss Vale," she said. "Adrian Hayes is asking to speak with you. He's insisting it can't wait."

  • Return Of The Ex Wife   Sleep well tonight, Adrian

Adrian POV Mira had disappeared somewhere into the crowd twenty minutes earlier, muttering something about finding the restroom that hadn't quite matched the tightness in her voice, and I hadn't chased after her. I'd spent the better part of an hour watching the doors near the stage, waiting for Seraphine Vale to reappear from wherever she'd vanished to after her introduction, my glass replaced twice by an attentive server who clearly assumed I was simply enjoying the champagne rather than using it as an excuse to keep standing in the same spot. When she finally emerged, moving with that same unhurried, deliberate stride, a small cluster of executives immediately converged on her, all vying for a handshake, a word, a fraction of her attention. I watched her navigate them with practiced ease, gracious but firm, never lingering too long with any single person, until she extracted herself and began moving toward the private elevator bank on the far side of the ballroom, clearly hea

  • Return Of The Ex Wife   A man named Reeves

Mira POV Diego Steel had a way of standing in a doorway that made it feel like the only exit in the building. For one absurd second, I considered simply walking past him, chin high, pretending I hadn't heard him say my name at all, the way I'd learned to walk past every uncomfortable moment in the five years since I'd decided Adrian Hayes and his crumbling empire were worth the effort of building an entire second life around. It had worked before. It had worked at his mother's funeral, when the old woman's sister looked at me like she smelled something rotten in the room. It had worked at every dinner party where someone mentioned Aysha's name too casually and watched to see how I'd react. It wasn't going to work now, and some deep, animal part of me already understood that before my mind caught up. His suit was perfectly tailored, dark navy, nothing flashy, the kind of quiet expensive that told you a man had nothing left to prove. I remembered thinking, back when Adrian first

  • Return Of The Ex Wife   She’s not a ghost anymore, Mira.

Mira POV I'd known something was wrong the second Adrian's champagne glass hit the floor, before I even fully processed the woman standing on that stage, before my brain caught up with what my body already understood in some deep, animal way. His whole frame had gone rigid beside me, his face draining of color so fast I thought for one terrifying second he was about to collapse right there in front of two hundred witnesses, and something about the way he whispered her name under his breath, so quiet I almost missed it, had sent ice straight down my spine. She's dead. I buried her. I'd heard those exact words from him before, more times than I could count over five years, usually late at night when he thought I was already asleep, murmured into the dark like a confession he couldn't stop making even after the person he was confessing to could no longer hear it. I'd learned to live with the ghost of Aysha Hayes haunting my engagement, my house, even my wedding day, telling myself

  • Return Of The Ex Wife   She’s dead. I buried her

Adrian POV The Vale Tower ballroom didn't look like a room built for business. It looked like a room built to remind every person standing inside it exactly how small they were. Floor to ceiling windows wrapped around the entire top floor, the city glittering forty stories below like something laid out purely for decoration. Waitstaff moved between clusters of black tuxedos and glittering gowns with trays of champagne nobody was drinking fast enough, and every few feet I recognized another face from the cover of a financial magazine, another CEO, another name that mattered. "You see him," Mira murmured beside me, her hand tight around my arm, "the man by the bar, gray suit. That's Clinton. He pulled his logistics contract from us and gave it straight to Vale Empire eighteen months ago." "I know who Clinton is, Mira." "I'm just saying. Everyone in this room owes something to her now. Every single person." Her eyes swept the crowd with the kind of hunger she never bothered hid

  • Return Of The Ex Wife   The same faceless name

Adrian POV Five years. Five years since the funeral, since Mira and I finally set a wedding date and I stood in front of two hundred people and said vows I only half meant. Five years since a company called Vale Global crawled out of nowhere and started eating my clients one contract at a time. It wasn't Vale Global anymore. Somewhere in the last three years it had become Vale Empire, and Vale Empire wasn't just a name whispered in boardrooms anymore. It was on the news. "In tonight's business spotlight," the anchor said, her voice bright and rehearsed, "Vale Empire has officially become the fastest growing conglomerate on the continent, with holdings in logistics, real estate, tech, and luxury retail. And yet, five years after its founding, the identity of its owner, known only as Seraphine Vale, remains one of the best kept secrets in the industry." I sat forward on the couch, the remote forgotten in my hand. The screen cut to a graphic instead, a chart climbing steadily

CHAPTER ONE Aysha POV I woke up to giggling. Not just any giggling, the kind that's too comfortable, too familiar, the kind that doesn't belong in a married home at this hour. I sat up slowly, blinking the sleep out of my eyes. The sound was coming from across the hallway. Adrian, My husba
