Penulis: Hedgebud

Chapter 1

Penulis: Hedgebud
The sky had only just begun to lighten when someone started pounding on my front door, the sound jolting me awake with a sheet of cold sweat.

In my previous life, this was the exact moment when the clinic doctor came crashing into my world. Dr. Leonard Price had slammed on our door loud enough to wake every neighbor.

Right there, in front of all of them, he had shoved a baby into my arms and scolded me, accusing me of giving birth and refusing to take responsibility.

I learned the baby, Caleb Sawyer, belonged to my younger sister. My parents begged me to keep him. Since I had no plans to marry, I had agreed.

Later, I hated myself endlessly for making that choice.

Now, hearing the knocks again, a chill ran through me. I shot upright, hurried to the door, and pulled it open.

A familiar face stood there.

"Lynn Sawyer, you gave birth to a child and abandoned him. You know child abandonment is a crime."

The neighbors were already waking up one by one, stretching their necks to catch a glimpse of the commotion.

I stared at him. Then, in the next breath, I yanked off my slipper and swung it straight across his face.

"You shameless old man! You dare show up at my door and frame me? I don't even have a boyfriend, and you claim I had a baby? Have you ever seen a woman who just gave birth and can still fight like this? Do I look like I just had a baby?"

My blows came so fast he was left speechless. Across the hall, my neighbor, Mrs. Marjorie Hale, finally reacted.

"That's right! Lynn goes to work every single day. I've never seen her with a pregnant belly! Did he get the wrong person? I recognize him. Isn't he the doctor from that shady clinic on Meadow Street?"

Hands on my hips, I shouted, "You filthy crook! Running a sleazy clinic and trying to scam me? Call the cops! Call them!"

The moment he heard the word "police", Dr. Price panicked. "I-I won't argue with you!"

I grabbed a fistful of his hair. "You don't want to argue, but there's no way I'm letting you walk away!"

Then I pulled out my phone and called, "Hello, 911? Someone is trafficking a baby!"

"Stop talking nonsense!"

"You can explain everything when the police arrive. If you don't, I'll smash your clinic myself!"

Heaven had given me another chance. Every humiliation, every injustice from my last life—I was unleashing them all now.

By the time the police arrived, Dr. Price was standing there with bruises on his face, holding a newborn baby. I stood in my pajamas, clutching a slipper, seething.

Neighbors crowded around us. When the officers heard what happened and saw the infant with its umbilical cord still attached, they were stunned.

"What is going on here? Tell the truth."

"This is the address and name the patient left," Dr. Price stammered, pulling a medical record from his pocket.

The officer checked it. The address was mine, and the name matched mine.

I crossed my arms. "I don't know anything about this. Someone must have used my name to give birth and is now trying to dump the baby on me."

The moment the words left my mouth, my parents appeared in the doorway.

"Lynn, since you don't want to get married anyway, why don't you take him in?" said my mother, Elaine Sawyer.

My father, Richard Sawyer, nodded urgently. "It would be better if you just raised him."

"Mom, Dad, what are you talking about? How could I casually adopt a child with no known background? We don't even know who his parents are. What if they're addicts? Bad genes get passed down. I'm not raising a future ingrate."

My parents froze, struck speechless. Dr. Price's expression soured. He shoved the baby into my arms.

"This is your family's child. I'm done. Tell Sophie Sawyer to raise her own son. If I'd known your family was this unreasonable, I wouldn't have come!"

Immediately, the crowd erupted in shock.

Everyone now knew that my younger sister, Sophie, was the mother of the baby boy.

Liam stared at them in disbelief. "No way!""If you don’t believe it, go do a paternity test. Look at your mom and dad. Their clothes alone scream money!"Liam’s eyes lit up instantly. He grabbed Tara by the arm and dragged her over. "See? These are my mom and dad! The baby in your belly is going to live a good life! Sorry, I didn’t recognize you earlier. My mistake."Sophie looked at them with disgust and stammered, "Impossible. How could you be my son?"I watched the drama unfold with amusement. "Sophie, how can you say that? You’ve been gone more than ten years. You came back specifically to find your biological son. Now that he’s standing right in front of you, how can you deny him?"Evan added fuel to the fire. "You kept insisting your son was the most outstanding. Well, here he is. Don’t say things that hurt his feelings."Sophie nearly fainted from our words. I nudged Liam lightly. "Come on, tell your mom and dad to take you out to dinner. And make sure you all get that pa

Mom panicked. "Lynn, why are you being so petty? We’re all one family. You are doing really well. What’s wrong with raising one more child?"I should never have held onto even a shred of hope for them. I pulled my hand away."Sorry. I can’t help. Either call the police or handle it yourselves. I’m done with this."With the paternity test results in hand, I turned to the police. "I demand a public apology and compensation for the emotional distress caused by today's events."She ruined my son’s celebration party. I would absolutely not let her off the hook.Evan called our attorney to handle the case, and we returned to attend the rest of Miles’ celebration. The representative from Sterling University finally relaxed after seeing the paternity report. At least my son’s future wouldn’t be destroyed. When the party ended, we headed back to the restaurant. Evan had already bought a house in the area. The next morning, my parents called me, crying."Lynn, please come with us to the

I spread my hands. "He’s probably at a welfare center."I pretended to have just remembered something."Right… Eighteen years ago, when I was at work, a security guard told me someone claiming to be Mom had brought my so-called son and wanted me to take him."When I went down and checked the surveillance footage, I realized I didn’t know that woman at all. So I called the police. They took the baby away and probably sent him to a welfare center. My coworkers can confirm it. If you don’t believe me, you can check the police report."Sophie let out a scream and lunged at me, but I reacted faster and slapped her across the face."You dare hit me! Lynn, give me back my son!"I let out a cold laugh. "You had the nerve to give birth illegitimately and run, then dump the kid on me, expecting me to raise him for you. You spent more than ten years partying while I carried the burden. And now that my son is successful, you want to come back and take the credit?"Let me tell you, you’ll ne

"My daughter-in-law carried that child for nine months and gave birth to him. From her first prenatal checkup to the delivery, everything is documented. She hemorrhaged during childbirth and almost died. Ridgeview Regional Medical Center saved her. Do you know how many connections we had to pull?"And you dare open your mouth and claim you gave birth to my grandson? Aren’t you ashamed?"My father-in-law, Harold Harper, stepped forward as well, shouting, "Say one more word of nonsense and I’ll call the police to have you arrested!"Sophie’s lips trembled. Her face was swollen from the slap, and she shrank back in fear. Suddenly, she stared at me. I raised an eyebrow. Then she seemed to understand."It’s you, Lynn! You faked everything!"The man with the heavy gold chain beside her, named Victor Grant, growled, "Your family is loaded now. I heard you even opened restaurants all the way to Ridgeview City. All of this stuff can be falsified. The only thing that can prove anything is a

Miles waved toward me, and I smoothed my dress, ready to walk up, when a sharp voice suddenly cut through the hall, "She’s not your mother! She’s not worthy of standing up there!"At that moment, everyone turned toward the source of the voice.I exhaled slowly. She finally came.I turned my head and saw Sophie with a middle-aged man wearing a thick gold chain standing beside her. She’d come. At last.I couldn’t suppress the nervous tremor inside me. After more than ten years, she still looked the same, yet exhaustion clung to her. Compared to me, she looked worn, the heavy makeup unable to hide the fine lines at the corners of her eyes. She entered the hall holding the man’s arm. Miles frowned tightly. "And you are?""This is your Aunt Sophie," I said before she could answer, stating her identity clearly.Sophie shot back immediately, voice trembling with emotion. "Lynn, stop lying! Son, I am your real mother!"The whole hall erupted, everyone staring at me in shock.Miles
