MasukNadia's POV
Lucian's pupils contracted sharply, slitting into vertical, beast-like slivers. As Alpha of the pack, he had absolute authority.
We stood locked in a stare-down in the deathly quiet bedroom, the air thick with a pressure that made me want to flee.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke, as if he flew into a rage out of humiliation when I exposed the fluctuation in his pheromones. "Nadia, listen closely. It's not because I care. You pissed me off, understand? You'd better keep in mind that I'm still your Alpha! "
In his eyes, his lowly "temporary mate" pointing out his change in mood at such an occasion was an insult to his authority.
Fighting the wolf's instinct to submit, I replied in a cold tone. "Yes, I understand. But as a healer, I thought I needed to point that out."
Lucian stared and studied my expression, his eyes flickering with something complex that I couldn't read.
Perhaps it was because over this past year, as the pack's Luna, I had been too obedient, too understanding, even too meek that he couldn't get mad at me at all.
At this time, someone was trying to reach me through Mind Link, a private one.
I opened the link.
It was the pack doctor.
My heart shot into my throat.
Trembling, I said, "Yes?"
"Nadia, the test results are in," the doctor's tone was grave. "Your physical recovery is fine. But..."
He paused for a second, and his next words exploded in my ear like thunder.
"You're pregnant—over two months. Look, I knew you didn't expect this... But this pup carried a powerful Alpha blood, and its energy field seems quite strong."
I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. The color drained from my face, and my hands started to shake slightly.
I was carrying his pup... Right after he broke the mate bond with me?
Almost instinctively, my eyes flew to Lucian.
The flash of panic was impossible to hide from an Alpha's keen senses. He must have caught the changes in my pheromones.
"What's wrong?" Lucian took a small step closer, the oppressive aura of an Alpha crashing over me.
The doctor asked, "Is it a good time to talk?"
"No. I have to go," I frantically cut the link. My heart was hammering against my ribs.
Lucia's gaze was like a blade. He closed the distance between us, his voice a cold command.
"Nadia, were you speaking to someone? What could mess with your heart rate that badly?"
I shook my head violently, my soul torn in two. And I wondered, "What can I say? Tell you that your temporary Luna was carrying your pup?"
No. I'd been humiliated enough. He was already ending things for the sake of his "true mate." I wasn't going to use a pup to beg for scraps of his pity. I wouldn't let my pup be a stumbling block on his path to "true love," and I wouldn't let my last shred of dignity turn to ash.
"Nothing. Just some work issues. I can handle it," I lied. It was the first time I dared to look him in the eye and lie.
Lucian narrowed his eyes, his stare dangerously indifferent. He didn't call me out, but the coldness in his look made my blood run cold.
I forced a brittle smile, desperate to get away from his scent. "I need to go."
I didn't wait for his reaction and bolted.
The second I got into my car, the grief I'd been holding back crashed over me. I collapsed over the steering wheel, sobbing until I couldn't breathe.
I thought, "Lucian, you're an Alpha—you can just flip a switch and end this. But what about me?"
I placed a shaking hand over my stomach, sensing the tiny, resilient spark of life inside. "My pup... You picked the worst time to come. Your father is busy running back to his true Luna, and now, without the protection of the mate bond, I'm not sure if you can survive..."
I forced myself to drive to the Soul-Forge—the jewelry shop I ran with my old friend Kaleb. On the surface, it was just a boutique. In reality, I infused gemstones with healing energy to stabilize werewolves suffering from "blood-fury" after shifting or mental trauma after battle.
During full moons, I would carve ancient runes into the stones, guided by a strange, instinctive power.
I didn't know where the knowledge came from; the symbols just appeared in my mind when I needed them. There was more hidden in my memory, something deeper... but I couldn't reach it.
"Nadia? You look terrible. Where's your healing power?" Kaleb rushed over, his face etched with worry.
I shook my head, avoiding his touch. "What did they say? How are things going?"
"Beta Malik from the Blood Moon Pack filed a complaint. He said that the healing sigils you engraved into the Moonstones are forbidden hexes stolen from their ancestral tombs. They are calling you a 'Soul-Thief.' If the High Council finds the energy signature matches their records, they will exile you!" Kaleb said, handing me a confidential file.
He paused, holding up a contract. "Also, someone is offering a fortune for Calming Gems."
I glanced at the staggering figure on the check and turned it down without a second thought. "Not now. Not until I'm done breaking the bond with Lucian and I'm officially clear of the pack."
"You what? Are you leaving Lucian?!" Kaleb's jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with anger. "He asked for this? Because that she-wolf finally woke up?"
I closed my eyes, a bitter, metallic taste in my throat. "Yeah. His true mate is back. So, it's time for me to disappear from his life."
Kaleb was shaking with rage. He hissed a curse under his breath, looking at me with pure heartbreak. "Nadia, why do you do this to yourself? If you hadn't agreed to save his life at the cost of almost all your healing energy back then..."
Lucian didn't push for answers. He figured the old man was just in a good mood and wanted to throw a few compliments his way, so he let it go.By 7:00 PM, Lucian arrived at Reid's villa. Before he stepped inside, the sound of laughter drifted through the air. As he crossed the foyer, the first one he saw was Nadia. Her face lit up with a genuine smile—the kind he rarely saw lately."As long as you and Lucian are doing well, I'm happy," Reid was saying, his eyes crinkling. "I think things are finally getting better."Devin nodded in agreement while Carlie worked in the kitchen, a rare treat."Lucian? Why are you just standing there?" Reid waved him over.As Lucian joined them, Reid poured him a cup of coffee. Lucian glanced at Nadia, then looked at his grandfather."Grandpa, I think Nadia's upset that I went public with the marriage. She won't even look me in the eye."Nadia stared at him, stunned. This side of Lucian was
"Alpha Lucian, it's getting worse," Andrew's voice crackled through the phone, clear enough for Nadia to hear every word."It's not just the rumors about Leo anymore. Someone released a statement claiming Luna Nadia is dating several guys at the same time."Nadia stared blankly at Lucian. The room fell into a heavy silence. She wanted to explain, but the words died in her throat.Lucian's brow furrowed at her silence."Nothing to say to me?" he asked."Would you even believe me?" she countered, her gaze turning stubborn as their eyes locked.Nadia called Leo. "Don't go out today, the paparazzi are at the gate.""Do you want me to say anything to them?" Leo asked, sounding groggy."No," she said firmly. "Anything you say now will just get twisted."Leo didn't like the idea, but knowing Lucian was involved, he eventually agreed.Later, Nadia stood outside Lucian's study, her hand trembling on the doorknob.
"I haven't got the chance to bring it up." Nadia breathed, her back pressed against the cold marble vanity."Haven't got the chance, or you don't want to?" Lucian countered, his towering frame casting a shadow over her.Nadia met his gaze, trying to keep her voice steady. "He said I don't have a boyfriend, and I don't. Right?""...""You're my mate, Lucian. Not my boyfriend. Isn't it?"Lucian went silent, his jaw tightening. The air in the small room grew thick with the heavy, musky scent of a provoked Alpha."You never intended to tell him," he growled, his eyes flashing with a predatory intensity that made Nadia flinch. "Answer me. What are you thinking?""It's just not the right time, OK?" she whispered, looking down."Why? It's simple. You're just choosing not to say it.""If that's what you believe, why even ask?""So, I'm right, huh?" he hissed."If that's what you want to hear..."Befor
"Why would she be upset?" Lucian countered. "What does the Gray Pine Pack even offer us? Sacrificing one insignificant project for the growth of our pack is nothing."After hanging up, Lucian stayed on the balcony, lighting a cigarette. His mind was flooded with images of Nadia and Leo at dinner. She looked so relaxed being next to him—a side of her Lucian had never seen before.A sharp agitation surged within him, a sense of crisis he couldn't quite name.As long as the mate bond wasn't severed, she belonged to him.Yet, things were shifting beyond his control...The next morning, Lucian was gone before Nadia got up.On her way to the office, Leo called."Free tonight? I'll join my father's friend's birthday party. Wanna be my plus one?" Leo said, mentioning he'd be leaving in a couple of days."So this whole trip was to settle your dad's old favors?" Nadia teased."Pretty much. Pick you up later? "
Leo gave a light smirk. "This is Nadia, my best friend. She's building her career here in the Silverstone Pack.""Your best friend?" Lucian repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble.Abbie's face drained of color as she cut a sharp look at Nadia.Nadia played it cool, acting like she and the Alpha were total strangers. She flashed a polite, empty smile. "Alpha Lucian, it's a pleasure.""The pleasure is mine," he replied, his gaze lingering on her.Dinner was a tense affair.Abbie clung to Lucian's arm, playing the doting partner while trying to charm Leo."It's an honor to meet you. We're practically in the same circle, you know?"Leo gave a polite nod but said nothing."Lucian invited you here for me. Well, I'm looking for a new hit," Abbie pushed, desperate for an opening. "I know you seldom write songs now, but just one song would be enough."Leo waited for her to finish before turning to Lucian."Is this what you wanted, Alpha?""I'm just making the introduction,"
"No, I don't. She was just too exhausted from last night, so I had to take the call for her."Kaleb went silent, the implication hitting him like a physical blow."Kaleb, Nadia is my mate. Stop being so damn attentive, or I won't be responsible for what happens next."Without waiting for a reply, Lucian hung up, his eyes cold as flint.Nadia didn't wake up until nine-thirty.She stretched, but the moment she saw her phone, she bolted upright.Multiple missed calls and texts from Leo filled the screen."Nadia, why aren't you picking up? Are you mad about what I said? Does this mean you're bailing on dinner tonight?"Nadia texted back, "Sorry, just woke up! Of course I'm coming.""Good. Don't worry about me today, I'll wander around on my own. See you tonight." Leo replied. After a quick breakfast, she drove to the Soul-Forge. The moment she stepped into her office, Cora followed her with a stack of drawings. "You l
"No, Lucian. I shouldn't have asked you to pick me up that night. I know you'd never let anyone hurt me... It's all my fault," Abbie whispered, her eyes wide and pleading."It's over. Drop it," Lucian said, his voice flat.Abbie nodded, a fragile smile playing on her lips. "Don't be
"Let's eat out tonight," Lucian said as he buckled Nadia's seatbelt."What do you want?"Nadia blinked, surprised by the sudden offer."Why the change of heart?""I'm sick of the food at the villa," he muttered, his eyes fixed on the road."Fine. Let's go."
Lucian was pushed over the edge. His wolf growled.Another heavy blow landed on Kaleb's jaw. Blood smeared across Lucian's knuckles, but he didn't feel a thing. His wolf was clawing at the surface, fangs baring in a silent snarl of lethal intent."Nadia! Wake up! They're kill
"Nadia, why put yourself through this? Lucian doesn't deserve you," Kaleb snapped, his protective instinct flaring."I've been sick for days. I need to get back to work. Cora and I are heading to the site later.""Nadia! Are you even listening to me?"She forced a smile.
