Amanda Gordon, my girlfriend, could never get quantities right. She always purchased one extra of everything. On our dates, she always ordered for three. “Oops, I ordered too much. Why don’t we invite Kevin too?” On my birthday, she bought two gifts. “Oops, I bought one too many. Why don’t we give it to Kevin?” After a while, I grew used to it and simply accepted that as my new normal. On the day of our wedding attire fitting, Amanda suddenly reached out and stopped me. “Leigh, the suit I designed for you is over there. This one is for the best man. I had it made for Kevin.” I looked up at the best man’s suit in front of me. It was sharply tailored, with clean, structured lines and tiny silver crystals set into the collar. The groom’s suit she had left for me, meanwhile, was plain, wrinkled, and stained. I finally decided to leave her at that moment. She had given the only bespoke suit she could commission to Kevin Burg. There was nothing left in this relationship worth holding on to. I quietly looked at my phone and sent a message to my former professor, Lawrence Hindle, who lived far away in Westmere. [Dr. Hindle, does your institute still have an opening for me?]

Reunion Is Difficult Chapter 9
I stopped in my tracks at the sight of that wilting bouquet of yellow roses.I had only come back to grab some materials on a quick errand. I never expected Amanda to still be here. She looked at me, rubbed her eyes, and then suddenly rushed forward to embrace my cold body. Her words tumbled out in a frantic, incoherent rush.“Leigh, I’m sorry. I found out the truth. Kevin manipulated me. I’m so sorry. Can we start over? I promise I’ll listen to you from now on.”Her apology sounded so earnest.Unfortunately, it had come far too late.Watching her cry stirred nothing in me anymore.“Amanda, how many times do I have to tell you? It’s over…”Before I could finish, she suddenly collapsed in front of me.After two days without food or water, combined with the overwhelming emotional strain, her body had finally given out.I was stunned for a few seconds. Then, I quickly called an ambulance.“She fainted from low blood sugar and emotional exhaustion. We’ve given her glucose throug

“You…”Amanda trailed off, looking as though my supposed heartlessness had shattered her.I reached back and took Anya’s hand. My voice was calm as I said, “Amanda, it’s over between us. How I live my life and who I choose to spend it with has nothing to do with you anymore.”Amanda’s lips trembled violently, as though she were desperately holding something back.I did not look at her again. I turned around and walked away from the rooftop. We had walked some distance when I realized my body was trembling slightly.Anya stayed beside me. She spoke tentatively, as though testing the waters.“Leigh, in Rosavia, taking a woman’s hand like that means you’re courting her. You’re supposed to make things official afterward.”I stared at her in complete confusion.“What?”She nodded with a perfectly serious expression.“Oh, get lost.”I lightly tapped the top of her head with my phone.“In Rosavia, kissing someone on both cheeks is considered a polite greeting, and now, you’re tel

Amanda stared at the message I had sent her. [I’ve moved on with my life. Please stop contacting me.]Loud ringing filled her ears. She suddenly remembered what Kevin had said when he was desperately trying to stop her from leaving.“Amanda, why do you think he went to Westmere? Who is waiting for him there?”With trembling hands, Amanda picked up her phone and called a friend who had studied in Westmere.“Find out who this woman is.”Her voice shook on the final few words. She refused to believe it. I had loved her so much. How could I have found someone else so quickly? The information came back swiftly. Without a moment’s delay, Amanda set off for Merrichester. It was the middle of Merrichester’s long winter night. She remained outside the Merrichester University Institute of Biological Sciences until morning.By the time someone found her at dawn, she was nearly frozen. When she opened her eyes, she did not call for help. Instead, she whispered the name she had been lo

Upon arriving in Westmere, I took full control of my own life.In the past, I had always pushed my plans aside to accommodate Amanda’s schedule.I put my biological research on hold because I had to rush home to cook dinner for her.I cut back on sleep because I had to go to the gym, just to meet her obsession with muscular physiques.Every dinner with friends, professional course, and personal commitment had to take a back seat to her. However, I was determined to find myself again. At the research institute, Lawrence joked, “We keep pretty long hours around here. Many often work until past ten. I hope no one has to rush home for dates.”The room fell silent. Everyone’s gaze shifted toward me at once.My face instantly flushed.I quietly shook my head. “I don’t have a girlfriend anymore.”Lawrence looked at me in surprise, then nodded.“That’s probably for the best. A man should focus on building his career.”With that, he motioned toward the back of the room.A young bl
