Surprise Visit

last update 게시일: 2026-09-17 02:41:25

The next night, I came home from the theater at eleven twenty-three. My feet hurt. My hair was still pinned from the show. I had removed most of my makeup, but I was fairly certain one eyelash was still attached somewhere near my temple. I unlocked my apartment door, stepped inside, and screamed.

August Belcourt was standing in my living room. He looked up from his phone.

"Hello."

"What the fuck?"

"You're home."

I dropped my bag onto the floor. "How did you get in here?"

"Your super."

"My super

  • Revenge Dating My Ex's Brother   Room To Grow

The Whitmore Theatre had a lobby large enough to fit the entire Ainsley Theatre inside it.Possibly twice.Marcus stood beside me, staring up at the chandelier.“I think I just saw my annual salary hanging from the ceiling.”“Don't touch anything.”“I wasn't going to.”“You were looking at that vase.”“I was appreciating the vase.”“You were calculating whether it would fit in your bag.”“It wouldn't. I've already checked.”I laughed and followed him toward the auditorium, where Daniel Mercer was waiting with Rebecca Sloan.“Melody.” Daniel greeted me with a smile. “Glad you could make it.”“Are you kidding? I was here twenty minutes early. Marcus made me wait outside so I wouldn't look desperate.”“You were pressing your face against the glass,” Marcus said.“I was checking whether the doors were open.”Rebecca shook my hand. “Ready to see the place?”“Absolutely.”She opened the auditorium doors. And I stopped.I'd seen photographs of the Whitmore. I'd studied its seating chart and

By nine thirty the next morning, I had made three cups of coffee, answered fourteen emails, and decided that I was not giving up my role in The Woman He Chose. At least, not yet.Daniel Mercer's projections were still open on my laptop. The numbers were impressive. With the actress he and Rebecca had in mind, advance ticket sales could be substantially higher than they'd projected with me in the lead. I understood the argument. I even respected it. But understanding why someone wanted my part didn't mean I had to hand it over.I picked up my phone and called Daniel."Melody," he answered. "Have you had a chance to look at everything?""I have. And I wanted to tell you where I stand before we get any further into casting conversations.""Go ahead.""I'm not ready to step away from the role."There was a brief pause."All right," he said. That was almost disappointingly reasonable."I know what the projections say," I continued. "And I'm not dismissing them. I understand what a recogniz

The quiet settled around us like something intentional. August’s arm was warm across my shoulders, his hand steady at my waist, fingers barely moving against the fabric of my shirt. I could feel the rise and fall of his breathing. The city noise outside my windows felt far away.I turned my face into the side of his neck. He smelled like the soap he used and the faint trace of the Thai food we’d just eaten. I pressed my lips there, soft, testing. His breath caught.“Melody.”Just my name. Low. Warning and invitation at the same time.I kissed him again, higher, closer to the hinge of his jaw. His hand tightened at my waist. When I lifted my head, he was already looking at me, eyes darker than usual in the low light of the living room.I kissed him.It wasn’t careful. His mouth opened under mine, and the sound he made in the back of his throat went straight through me. I shifted, climbing half into his lap so I could get closer. His hands found my hips and held on.We kissed like that

Daniel Mercer wanted me to meet a director, and that was good news. At least, I thought it was good news until the director asked whether I'd considered stepping away from the lead role.We were twenty minutes into the meeting. Twenty lovely minutes of discussing the Whitmore's stage, the larger ensemble, and whether the second-act set could be redesigned without losing the intimacy of the original production. Then she said it."Have you thought about what your role might look like if we brought in another actress?"I looked at her. "I'm sorry?"Daniel shifted in his chair. The director, a woman named Rebecca Sloan, smiled."Not immediately, necessarily. But the commercial production presents opportunities that you didn't have at Ainsley.""Such as?""A recognizable name in the lead could help us reach audiences who haven't seen your work."Ah. I guess she thought I wasn't a recognizable name.I looked at Daniel. "You said you wanted me in the role.""I do.""But?""But we have to con

  • Revenge Dating My Ex's Brother   Family Dinner

The problem with agreeing to actually date my fake boyfriend was that nobody else knew anything had changed. Which meant when August called Thursday afternoon and said, "My parents want us at dinner tonight," I had questions."So we're fake dating at dinner.""Yes.""While actually dating."A pause."We're seeing where this goes.""That sounds suspiciously like dating.""Melody.""I'm trying to understand which boyfriend I'm bringing.""There is only one of me.""Debatable."He exhaled. "Seven.""Is Paul going to be there?"Another pause."Yes.""Wonderful.""I can tell them we can't make it."That surprised me. Six years ago, a Belcourt family dinner had been something I attended because declining Evelyn Belcourt felt approximately as possible as declining a court summons. Now August was offering to cancel because I might not want to see his brother."No. We'll go.""You're sure?""Yes.""Fine.""Which version of you should I expect?"He hung up. Rude.Evelyn greeted me like I'd been

  • Revenge Dating My Ex's Brother   Dinner Confession

August invited me to dinner on Wednesday. Actually invited me.AUGUST: Would you have dinner with me tonight?I stared at the message. Then took a screenshot.ME: Wow, is this a date?AUGUST: I will come get you at eight. He didn't answer. Apparently he had limits. At eight, his car picked me up outside Ainsley. The restaurant was small, expensive, and discreet enough that nobody openly photographed us when we walked inside. People looked. They always looked now. But nobody shouted Paul's name or asked whether I was sleeping with both Belcourt brothers, so I considered it a successful evening.August had reserved a table in the back."You arranged this yourself."He pulled out my chair. "Yes.""No Natalie?""No.""Are you sure this is allowed?""Sit down, Melody."I sat. August took the chair across from me."You look wonderful as always."I blinked. He picked up his menu."What?""Nothing.""You're staring.""You invited me to dinner and complimented me within thirty seconds. I'm con
