Layla’s POV

The sound of my phone ringing cut through the silence of the break room. I picked it up from the table and frowned at the caller’s name before answering, my heart thumping.

“Hi, Aunt Kayla,” I greeted, my voice soft.

There was a brief pause before she spoke, her voice unusually gentle.

“You don’t sound very excited to hear from me. Fine. I owe you an apology. I’m sorry for being insensitive when you called to tell me about your breakup the other day. I was having a terrible day at w

Layla’s POVThe sound of my phone ringing cut through the silence of the break room. I picked it up from the table and frowned at the caller’s name before answering, my heart thumping.“Hi, Aunt Kayla,” I greeted, my voice soft. There was a brief pause before she spoke, her voice unusually gentle.“You don’t sound very excited to hear from me. Fine. I owe you an apology. I’m sorry for being insensitive when you called to tell me about your breakup the other day. I was having a terrible day at work, and when you called crying about how Summer and Nick had betrayed you, everything just got to me. I ended up taking my frustration out on you without even realising it. I shouldn’t have said those things.”My expression softened, and my shoulders relaxed.“It’s fine, Aunt. I understand now, and I should apologise too. I haven’t really paid attention to your feelings or asked how things have been at your new job since you moved to London. I’ve been so caught up in my own problems that I bare

Layla’s POV“What’s wrong?” Kyle asked, his eyebrows furrowing with concern as he studied my face.I slowly opened my eyes and stared at him, still trying to catch my breath.“You’re hurting me, Kyle,” I said.“How?” he asked, looking confused.“You’re stepping on my foot with your shoe! Gosh, that hurts!” I exclaimed, wincing. His expression changed immediately. He pulled back and settled into his seat before carefully lifting my right foot onto his lap. He removed my heel and examined the injury. His eyes widened when he saw the bruise. The area was already red and swollen. He lowered his head and gently blew on it, his hand resting against my leg.I curled my toes at the sensation, suddenly very aware of how close he was.“I’m fine, Kyle. I’ll just apply some ointment when I get inside,” I assured him, scratching the back of my neck awkwardly.“I’m sorry for hurting you, Layla.” His expression was serious, so different from the playful look he’d worn moments earlier.“It’s fine. Layla’s POVI stepped out of my house, closing the door softly behind me. When I turned around, I let out a small gasp. Kyle was standing so close that I could catch the clean, warm scent of his cologne.“What is it? Why are you surprised to see me?” he asked softly, his eyes fixed on my face.“I thought you said Derek was coming to pick me up. Why are you here instead?” I asked.“I changed my mind, Layla.” His gaze travelled down my outfit, lingering briefly before a small smirk tugged at his lips.“You don’t like what I’m wearing?” I asked, wondering what he was thinking.“No… It’s just funny seeing you in something other than the dress you went to get yesterday for this dinner.”I bit the inside of my cheek, still embarrassed that I had sent him the pictures instead of Isabella.“You said the dress was too revealing, and I wasn’t planning on sending those pictures to you. It was a mistake on my part,” I muttered the last part under my breath.Judging by the smug look on his face, h

Layla's POV“Madeline is getting more and more excessive. Jealousy makes people go crazy,” I said calmly to Sophie the next morning as I sat across from her in her office. Her coffee was steaming as we went through everything I had learned at the business conference yesterday. She laughed softly under her breath, "Blame it on your excellence, Layla, and let her be, okay?" she said.I crossed my arms, giving her a knowing look, my lips tight."Let her be again? It just doesn't make sense that Madeline could do anything and get away with it, she freaking ruined the entry ticket on purpose," I said, my voice louder than I intended to, my chest rising. She rested her chin on her table and leaned closer, looking at me."Layla, according to the footage I watched, your intern was the one who mistakenly took the ticket along with the discarded manuscripts and brought it to the utility room, Madeline's intern was already there when she came in and she also mistakenly took the ticket along wit

Kyle's POV“Kyle, Adrian, enough with the boxing. Someone is looking for Kyle.”Jayden’s loud voice cut through the boxing arena from where he sat outside the ring, his mouth full of chicken and a glass of wine in his hand, his legs crossed as though he owned the place.I exhaled, sweat trickling down my temple as I wiped my nose with my forearm, keeping my gloves raised.“Who is looking for me?” I shouted, breathing heavily. He shrugged, spreading his hands dramatically, looking far too pleased with himself.“Dawson, I don’t know, just leave that boxing ring and come here,” he said, calling me by my middle name, his lips twitching with amusement."Jayden is crazy, we have trained enough already, let's just go check," Adrian said, pushing me lightly out of the ring, patting my shoulder. We jumped out of the ring, landing on the mat, and I grabbed two warm towels and handed one to Adrian, cleaning ourselves up from the sweat, wiping our faces and necks, before going to meet Jayden at t

Layla's POV“Cheers,” I said, leaning closer to clink my glass with Kyle’s. A small smile played on my face as I brought the glass to my lips and drank the entire contents in one go, the alcohol burning warmly down my throat.“Cheers,” Kyle replied, raising his glass before downing his drink too, his throat moving as he swallowed."So... what is the occasion, Mr. Brown? Ohhh, it is Kyle for the moment, no professional settings for now," I giggled sheepishly, correcting myself quickly, my cheeks warm from the drink.Kyle chuckled, staring at me, his eyes amused."Do you think there has ever been any moment when you have been professional towards me?" he asked.“Really? I don’t think so, Kyle. I’ve always tried to be professional with you,” I said, the playful grin still on my face as I leaned back."Hmm. Let's just stick to this Kyle instead of the constant Mr. Brown," he said and leaned over, pouring more drink into my cup and his, the bottle clinking against the glass.I tilted my he
