KAEL

The knock came loud when it came the next morning almost like thunder ripping through the last bit of silence that filled that early morning.

I blinked awake, the faint morning light spilling across the room.

Ashley stirred beside me, her head still resting on my arm. For a moment, I thought about everything from the talk of war, the weight of everything.

Just for a second it was quiet until the knocking came again.

“Kael!” Logan’s voice echoed from the other side. “You need to come... It’s urgent.”

Ashley sat up quickly, her hair messy and her eyes still heavy with sleep. “What’s happening?” she looked at me with a deep sense of concern.

I didn’t answer right away. My chest tightened with that familiar tension that was building slowly in it.

“Stay here,” I murmured.

“Kael” she called after me.

But I was already moving, pulling on a shirt as I crossed the room.

The floorboards creaked under my feet as I reached the door and opened it.

Logan stood there, his expres

KAEL I had been trying to reach Logan for hours and it was difficult at that moment to reach him.I wasn't exactly worried but more like angry with how long it was taking. The call kept ringing, each one cutting off before it could even connect. The silence on the other end only made my anger grow heavier as I sat there with the phone still in my hand, staring at the screen, wondering if I was being too paranoid or if my gut was right all along.Could this just be the way of life telling me that he was a cheat and betrayal just as I was thinking.Come to think of it, he had been acting strange lately and almost jumpy whenever I asked simple questions. I didn’t want to believe it, but every part of me kept whispering the same thing: something wasn’t right.I stood up, running a hand through my hair as the tension in my chest built up again. Maybe I was tired of waiting for answers. Maybe I just needed to see things for myself. So I left the office making way to the wing where he st

ASHLEY After Kael left, I lay there staring at the ceiling for a long while. My hand rested on my stomach, not because there was anything to feel yet, but because it helped me breathe. I thought about the baby with this fear that anything could go wrong at any point in time. The thought of a life inside me was still too new to me still and I couldn't help but feel that I needed to protect it with everything.I stayed there until the silence in the room began to fill me slowly. Again my mind went back to Lorna citing the fact that it had been long I heard from her.Just then I sat up, brushing my hair out of my face and forcing myself to move. Kael’s scent still lingered faintly in the air, mixed with the faint trace of his words earlier but what I wanted was different. It was only a matter of time before I took a quick bath, letting the warm water run down my skin until it eased the strange tension in my chest. I tried to think about how I’d tell Lorna the news while I intended to

LOGAN The subway was filled with the scent of diesel and something else that I didn't know. All this while my heart was still heavy with the thought of everything. I shuffled down the stairs with my hands shoved deep into my jacket pockets, trying to forget the message that had turned my mind.I tried not to think too much about it. Maybe it was the narrowness of the tunnel; maybe it was what had been said in the dungeon but something felt off. People brushed past me: a woman with a grocery bag, a kid with headphones glued to his ears, a man in a suit tapping at his phone like his life depended on it.Still none of that mattered, all I wanted to do was get this over with as fast as I could. In the distance Edrin leaned against a pole. He wasn't aware of my presence as he was smoking a cigarette while speaking over hai phone.“You,” I said, simply stepping in front of him.Edrin blinked, looking surprised for a second, like he hadn’t expected me here. Then his grin widened. “ Fa

ASHLEY The moment those words left my lips, the room went quiet. He stood there before walking to where I was.He stared at me like he didn’t hear me right. Then his eyes flickered, the corners softening as if he couldn’t decide whether to smile or scream out in surprise.Well I was not able to tell what he was feeling at that moment but I knew he was excited.“You’re serious?” he asked in a quiet voice, still standing there frozen after the first few steps he had taken.I nodded, feeling my heart race again. “I think so. ..I’ve been feeling sick lately. I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure.”He took more steps and hands reached out, stopping just before my shoulders, like he was afraid to touch me.Then his fingers brushed my cheek gently.“You’re with my pup?” he whispered. His voice cracked a little, and I could tell the thought alone shook him as it was the first time I had seen him close to tears. My throat tightened. I didn’t trust myself to speak, so I only nodded

ASHLEY He still wasn't back so I took that whole while to freshen upI took longer than necessary and that had to do with the fact that I was still mad at Lorna, but at least when I walked out it was with a clearer mind. I could tell what I wanted now and it was autonomy. My guess was that he must have arrived during the time I was having a shower as I could hear his voice in the hallway talking to the guards. After I appeared halfway presentable, I was almost heading out to meet him but as I opened the door he was right there. My feet froze at the base of the stairs when I saw him about to knock.“You were coming to see me."He affirmed what I had thought seconds before. “Did it go well?" I asked. “Yes,” He said replying I had been waiting for a long time for him to arrive with news of what had happened but now that he was here my heart was beating heavily. “How did it go?" I muttered. He stood there for a while as though leaving me to guess who and who it could be .“You know w

KAELI didn't know what to feel about the rotting feeling that was eating away in my chest.Anger, anxiety Maybe both. All I knew at that moment was that I had a different type of anger at that moment and it was one that consumed everything in its path. I was enraged at this moment, and in a way the fact that I was having a bit of a good day before the whole thing happened made it a whole lot harder to deal with at that moment.Yes, the man had been caught and was in the dungeon still it left a feeling of anger that I couldn't comprehend at that moment. The words echoed in my head over and over, In a way I was still finding it hard to believe that anyone had the audacity to sneak into my pack.Well the good thing is that now I had the upper hands and I was going to find out who it was. Not that I didn't have my guess, this gave me a different way of finding out.In my fury, I would have broken something, perhaps smashed my fist into the wall or something else, but for some funny reas
