Chapter Eleven

 

Bates called a second meeting Wednesday morning, March fifteenth.

They waited for Dale thirty minutes late, but couldn’t start without him. Bates checked his wristwatch again. Then Dale rushed into the meeting room.

“Sorry, I had to take the kids to school. Shannon isn’t feeling well,” he said.

“Okay, just sit so we can get started.” Bates ordered.

Dale sat pulling out a clipboard with a pen to take observations.

Bates glanced at the fifty officers in the clustered windowless room. Most of the department appeared bereft of sleep.

“As you all know, we had two fresh murders in the past three weeks. The initial martyr, identified as Robin Zeal, and the second victim, Renee White. These women found in the river at Hazelnut Park with similar lacerations on the abdomen.  

“An anonymous tip reported witnessing a suspicious-looking man prowling the park at approximately 2:00 AM. The caller said the man wore an army suit carrying a large knapsack.  I headed ou
