Chapter Thirteen

 

March twentieth started as a melancholy day for Jennifer Woods. After the disclosure of Walter Newton’s body, she had a rough time accepting his death. Jennifer offered to take a week off. She hadn’t done so in years of law enforcement responsibility.

Jennifer’s apartment quiet that evening. Bates taught them to listen to the quietness. He taught them if it was too quiet it was quiet for a reason. And that reason didn’t always turn out to be a great one.

When Walter didn’t account for work the coming day of March sixteenth, they knew something was amiss. He always showed up to work never missed a day. When he didn’t call announcing his absence, a dreadful feeling crept over Jennifer. Bates sent Max and Dale to Walter’s house. They knocked on the door a few times. When Walter didn’t answer, they went to the neighbor’s. The neighbor told the cops they hadn’t seen Walter leave his house since the day before.
