There was a sense of excitement in the air and a real celebratory vibe all around The Commons for the newly proclaimed Foundation Day.
Everything had gone according to the plan Cara and Dane had plotted and got Lucas to buy into. Not only did they both stage brutal coups to remove their problematic Alphas, but they agreed to unite and merge the two packs.
There were benefits for both packs. The nomads of Cape Point would have more room to roam, and Green Plains would gain access to the Cape's superior warrior army to defend itself from the attacks and invasions that were becoming more frequent. Green Plains had a lot of land, and all of the surrounding packs wanted a share of it.
Once the merger had been approved by the leadership teams of both packs, it was embraced by the greater pack members wholeheartedly. They had all looked forward to this day for weeks, and there was going to be one hell of a party that would probably last for days.
Colourful bunting lined the fences, and a band was playing on a side stage as members of both packs mingled, danced and laughed together for the first time in history.
“Beta Dane!” shouted a heavily pregnant Sarah Morgan as she approached with a wide smile. “Or I suppose it’s Alpha now?”
“It’s fine, Sarah. I’m only Alpha for another fifteen minutes anyway. I’ll be a Beta again when the new pack is made official,” he replied with a smile. It was good to see Sarah relaxed and happy for the first time in months.
“I just wanted to thank you again for everything you’ve done. You saved my life, my baby’s life, and I’m sure my mate would have lived through hell if Alpha Patrick had gotten his way,” she said as tears of gratitude welled in her eyes. “If the baby is a boy, we’re naming him Dane.”
“I’d be honoured, Sarah, thank you.”
Cara stood by his side, her arm linked with his, bursting with pride at her soon-to-be chosen mate. She really was the luckiest she-wolf in the pack.
As the band finished up their set, attention turned to the main stage, adorned with large flags bearing the name and insignia of the new pack, Green Cape.
Cara gave Dane a kiss backstage and wished him good luck as she made her way around to the front to join the crowd forming near the main stage to watch proceedings.
The five people that were about to form the leadership team of the newly merged pack were mingling backstage, but the makeup of the positions were only known by Lucas. Dane and Lucas had decided as part of their initial plan that by having the bigger pack, Lucas should reign as Alpha.
Dane was the only former Cape Point member included, which didn't surprise him, but he was struggling to work out which order everyone else would slot in below him. He went through it in his mind as his eyes darted around.
Lucas had to play quite the political game just to get the removal of Marcus and the merger agreed to. Promises were made, assurances given, and deals made. Those that helped persuade others to give their blessings expected to be rewarded in this shake up, with Lucas wanting to sweep a broom through Marcus' leadership structure.
Lucas took to the stage and addressed the crowd. Cheers and applause were dotted through his speech as he spoke of a new beginning for both packs, and a prosperous future. A small minority of people who were loyal to Marcus and Patrick had made their presence known, but the overwhelming feeling in the air was that of positivity.
He then introduced his new leadership team and invited them onto stage, one-by-one.
As Lucas began to introduce his Beta, Dane started to take a few steps forward.
“Beta Thomas Pearce,” Lucas announced.
Dane froze in his tracks as a tall, curly haired man pushed past him. He tried to keep his face neutral, but internally his mind was swimming. He couldn't believe what just happened, this wasn’t part of the plan. When the idea of the merger was put to Lucas, the agreement had always been that Dane would be Beta.
He watched on incredulously as Lucas continued to overlook him as he announced the Gamma and Delta positions. His rage was growing fiercer by the minute, and it was getting harder to maintain a cool façade. With no one else left backstage, Lucas introduced Dane to the crowd.
“And finally, one of the most important jobs in this new pack – Head Warrior. Dane Larssen will lead and develop our warrior army, and make them the biggest and most feared in the nation.”
What the fuck? Head Warrior? thought Dane. I’m supposed to be Beta. This is a massive demotion.
At this point, Dane’s wolf, Stig, wanted to shift and rip Lucas' throat out, and Dane was quite happy to let him. Instead, he pushed Stig back and calmly walked off stage as the crowd applauded him. To the audience everything appeared fine, but the parting look he shot Lucas told a different story.
He stormed off into the crowd and found Cara, needing to be as far away from Lucas as possible. As he approached her, he saw the look on her face mirrored his own. She was furious. If he wasn’t so mad himself, it would be hot.
“What the hell was that?” she demanded.
“That wasn’t the plan. He completely screwed me over.”
“We need to fix this, Dane. It can’t happen like this.”
“Babe, I know it’s not ideal and I’m mad about it too, but at least we’ll still be together. Patrick can’t stop me from choosing you now.”
Cara felt a pang in her chest. It shouldn’t matter to her that Dane was no longer a Beta…but it did. For years now, she’d been the Beta’s girlfriend. Even though she was an Omega, being with Dane meant people looked at her in a different light. Even her family fell under the Beta’s protection.
The thought of sliding back down the ranks again was utterly devastating. Her heart was racing, her hands were shaking, and all the anger that was now churning in her gut was focused on one person.
“Who the fuck does he think he is?” she raged.
“Your mate!” interrupted Lucas from behind as he breathed in her scent.
“Your what?” said Dane, incredulous.“Mate,” said Cara, staring at Lucas in shock.Dane felt like the ground beneath him was shaking, as though at any minute it would crack and send him plummeting downwards. Everything was falling apart. Not only was he not appointed Beta, he was so far down the ranking he was a nobody. To top it all off, the love of his life had finally found her mate, and it was the guy who’d screwed him over.Dane ran a hand over his shaved head. If he had longer hair, he’d be tugging it in frustration.Lucas took a step towards Cara with his hand outstretched and took her hands in his. The sparks of the mate-bond rushed over their skin, leaving a pleasurable elect
Cara hadn’t slept much in the last few days and it was starting to catch up with her. Every night she was restless, tossing and turning as her mind was consumed with the decision she would have to make.Elusive as it was, sleep offered no reprieve, as even her dreams were plagued with visions of the man who owned her heart, and the mate who could give her the future every she-wolf yearns for.Dane was right, though. As much as she longed to leave her Omega status behind and have her place in the pack secured, she loved Dane and couldn’t just throw away their history together and her feelings for him.Kissing him goodbye as he left for the packhouse, she felt at peace with her decision. If Lucas wanted her as a mate, he was going to have to work for it.
Cara was in her happy place, the gym, midway into a decent run on the treadmill. Her phone buzzed in the holder, and her eyebrows shot up when she saw the Alpha’s number pop up on the screen in front of her.She immediately stepped on the edges away from the belt and hit pause on the treadmill, grinding it to a halt. She composed herself, not wanting to give away how nervous she actually was, and cleared her throat before answering.“Alpha Lucas,” she said cheerily. “How are you?”“I’m well, thank you Cara,” he replied in his deep baritone voice. She didn’t want to admit it, even to herself, but his voice alone stirred something in her.“What can I do for you?”
It wasn't a bad party, as far as these things go. The food was delicious, the music was pumping, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. They also seemed relaxed. It appeared that with the absence of the Alpha and Beta, the guests were prepared to let their hair down. Cara was mingling happily and was enjoying getting to know some of the new pack members. She had started the night wondering if she would have much in common with anyone, but was relieved to find they really were just werewolves like her, no better and no worse. She had agreed to a secret signal with Dane so that if she was in an awkward or uncomfortable situation, he could sweep in and get her out of it, but so far she hadn’t needed it. “Gamma Sam,” greeted Cara as he approached. “I’m Cara Nordstrom. Alpha Lucas was right, you do know how to throw a decent party.”
A packhouse tradesman stood balanced on a step ladder, using a drill to repair the hinges on the door to Alpha Lucas’ office. The man responsible for the damage sat on a couch in the foyer, waiting for a meeting with Lucas.“Dane, come in!” shouted Lucas over the sound of the power drill.“Sorry about the door,” apologised Dane. “Although, I guess it was a better option than your face,” he added with a shrug.“That’s one way of looking at it.”Lucas wanted nothing more than to get rid of the smug arsehole sitting in front of him, but he was trying to be civil with Dane and keep their relationship workable. Disciplining him and making him more of an enemy than he already was, would affect how Cara saw him. The la
The sun was beating down as the warriors ran with packs on from the centre of town to the marshall post, just as they had the day before. Dane was determined to break a few more of these guys today. When they arrived at the hut, exhausted, Dane allowed a five-minute reprieve. They dropped their packs, guzzled water, and attempted to settle their breathing and heart rates. After only two minutes had passed, Dane had yet another surprise for the warriors. “Time's up, everyone get ready to train,” he barked. With a collective groan, they made their way over to line up, except for one of the younger Green Plains warriors. He dragged his heels and complained about the lack of recovery time. Dane marched over to him, his face only inches away, and screamed at him as his face turned red with rage.
“Henrik!” shouted Cara, waving her arm to catch his attention. He crossed the road in a quick jog, giving her a one-armed hug and a peck on the cheek.“Sorry I’m late. Blame your boyfriend though, he works me too hard,” he apologised with a small laugh as he opened the cafe door.“I was running late myself. I thought I’d be the one having to apologise to you. I’ve been spending so much time traveling back and forth between home and the new pack.”They found a table and ordered lunch. Henrik and Dane were best friends, and Cara had grown close to him over the years too. He was level-headed and easygoing, as well as a superb listener. He was the perfect sounding board
Cara dialled the number that Henrik had given her, tapping her foot as it started to ring. She almost ended the call the moment she heard the sugary sweet voice answer, but focused on the task at hand.“Hi Lily, this is Cara. We uh - met - at the packhouse yesterday.”“I’m hanging up–”“No! Please don’t. I’m not looking to start a fight. I’m actually really embarrassed about my behaviour yesterday and I’d like to meet up to apologise in person. Can I buy you a coffee?”Lily paused on the other end of the phone, trying to determine Cara’s sincerity.“Fine. Todd’s Coffee House near the park in town. Give me half an hour and I’ll meet
