Emma’s POV

“Congratulations, Mrs. Stanford. You’re pregnant. Three weeks, according to the bloodwork.”

Dr. Whitman’s voice sounded like it was coming from the end of a long tunnel. My fingers twitched against my knees. I looked down at the small slip of thermal paper she slid across the desk. A black-and-white smudge.

“Three weeks?” My voice cracked. I reached out, my hand shaking so violently the paper rattled against the wood. I gripped the edges of the ultrasound photo, digging my fingernails into the border just to anchor myself.

“Three weeks,” Dr. Whitman repeated with a warm, professional smile. “Given the history, we’ll want to monitor your hormone levels closely, but everything looks perfect right now.”

Three years of negative tests. Three years of synthetic hormones that made my skin hot and my mood swing like a pendulum. I stared at the smudge, and for a second, the sterile white office faded. I was back in the dining room of the Stanford estate last Christmas. Michael’s mother, Helen, had stared right past my plate, her voice sharp as a razor. “A family like ours needs continuity, Michael. Love is fine, but a womb is a duty.” Michael hadn’t defended me then. He had just stared at his steak, cutting it into tiny, precise squares.

Now, I was holding our miracle.

“Thank you,” I whispered, sliding the photo into my coat pocket. My heart hammered against my ribs.

Outside the clinic, the afternoon air felt comforting. I pulled out my phone. 2:15 PM. Michael would be deep in the quarterly budget meetings at the Stanford Corporation headquarters. If I called him now, he would answer in that hushed, hurried tone he used when he was being a businessman. “Can it wait, Em? I'm right in the middle of something.”

No. I wanted to see his face. I wanted to watch the corporate mask slip and see the love of my life look at me with so much joy.

I scrolled past his name. My thumb hovered over Zara’s number.

Before I could press dial, the screen lit up. Her contact photo… the two of us pressed cheek to cheek at a winery last summer, laughing into the camera, flashed against the glass. I shook my head, deciding to just go to her instead. I’d break the news to her face to face.

I gripped the steering wheel of my car, a genuine smile stretching across my face. Michael was my rock, but Zara was my safe harbor. If there was one person in the world who would never lie to me, who would protect my heart as fiercely as her own, it was her.

The drive to the upscale gated community where Zara lived felt longer than usual.

At the security gate, Brains leaned out of the booth, his face breaking into a familiar grin. “Afternoon, Mrs. Stanford. Here to see Miss Zara?”

“Yes, Brains. Is she inside?”

“Yes, ma'am.” He pressed the button, and the gates swung open with a low hum.

I parked in the guest slot, pulled my keys from the ignition, and stepped out. I took a deep breath, ready to burst through her front door and scream the news.

But a sight stopped me.

Parked right in the shadow of the garage overhang was a sleek, midnight blue sedan. The custom license plates were unmistakable.

Michael’s car.

My smile didn’t drop; it faded, the muscles in my face stiffening into a tight, unnatural mask. Why was he here? The budget meeting was supposed to run until five. Did he leave early? Did something happen?

I walked toward the front porch. With every step, the air seemed to thicken, making it hard to draw a full breath. My knees felt strange… loose and hollow, like they might buckle if I hurried. I reached into my coat pocket, my fingers brushing the thermal paper of the ultrasound. Maybe he was here to surprise me? Maybe Zara had clued him in? No, Zara didn’t know yet.

The front door was unlocked. It was always unlocked when Zara was home during the day.

I pushed it open quietly, it moved without a sound. The scent of lemongrass and ginger from the Thai food drifted through the foyer, mixed with something else. Zara’s expensive vanilla perfume. And the sharp, woodsy cologne I bought Michael for his birthday last month.

“Michael?” I called out, my voice barely louder than a whisper.

No one answered.

I walked past the foyer, my flat shoes making no sound on the

Persian rug. The hallway opened up into the expansive, sunlit living room.

The keys slipped from my fingers first. They hit the floor with a sharp, metallic clatter that echoed off the ceilings. Right behind them, the white ultrasound photo fluttered out of my pocket, landing face-up on the floor.

On the long sofa, two people were tangled together.

Zara’s legs were draped over the armrest, her fingers buried deep in the thick dark hair of the man hovering over her. Her blouse was unbuttoned at the collar. Michael’s hands were gripped tightly around her waist, his head tilted as his mouth pressed hungrily against her neck. Her speaker played music in a soft tone.

I blinked.

The room tilted. I closed my eyes tightly, squeezing them shut for three long seconds. “It’s the fertility drugs,” I told myself. “The hormones are making you hallucinate. You’re tired. You’re seeing things.”

I opened them. I took one slow, deliberate step forward into the light of the living room window.

It wasn’t a trick of the afternoon sun.

Michael’s hand moved up Zara’s ribcage, pulling her closer against his chest. Zara let out a soft sigh, her eyes closed, a look of complete, rapturous satisfaction on her face.

The world went entirely silent, the blood roaring in my ears so loud it drowned out the hum of the air conditioner. I stood perfectly still, a ghost in the doorway of my best friend’s house, watching my husband make love to another woman.

Emma The flashbulbs began before I even stepped out of the black town car.It was five o’clock on a rain-slicked Thursday afternoon outside the Grand Metropolitan Chapel. The venue hadn't been chosen for its holy architecture or romantic charm; it was selected for its floor-to-ceiling glass atrium, positioned perfectly along the city’s central avenue. It was a fishbowl designed explicitly for the cameras.Marcus Reyes held the car door open, extending a hand to steady me."The press was tipped off an hour ago, as requested," Marcus said quietly. "Every financial outlet, society column, and tabloid photo desk is positioned across the street. The Whitfield board members were all extended private invitations to the front pews. Chairman Vance arrived ten minutes ago.""And Michael?" I asked, stepping onto the pavement."He and Helen are inside," Marcus replied, a subtle, cold smile touching his lips. "They couldn't afford not to attend once the formal invitation was hand-delivered to the

Emma Daniel rested his hands lightly on the edge of the desk, his cool eyes fixing on me with stillness. The ambient light of the study cast sharp shadows across his angular face, making him look less like a benefactor and more like a predator weighing his options."Your terms," Daniel repeated, his voice low and measured. "I’m listening."I picked up the folder lying between us and opened it. The white pages inside were filled with legal text, neat paragraphs outlining the terms of a standard high-stakes arrangement. I didn't need to read every line to know what it contained: a total surrender of personal autonomy wrapped up in an elegant corporate bow.I set the folder back down, keeping my hand flat over the cover."First," I began, my voice steady, devoid of the hesitation that had defined me for four years. "This will not be an informal arrangement or a verbal understanding between families. I want a binding, airtight legal contract drawn up by an independent firm. One that has

EmmaThe seat of Daniel’s sedan was warm, but the chill inside me had settled deep into my bones. Rain pelted the tinted windows in heavy, rhythmic sheets as the city blurred past.I didn't look at Daniel. I sat with my hands folded in my lap, staring down at my waterlogged shoes."You went to the boardroom," Daniel said softly from the darkness beside me. It wasn't a question."I thought I could make them see," I whispered, my voice flat, robbed of all its earlier fire. "I thought my father's name still meant something in that building.""A name means nothing to men who are paid to forget it," Daniel replied. His voice was calm, devoid of any 'I told you so' smugness. "Michael has spent months offering them board seats in Stanford subsidiaries once the merger goes through. Loyalty doesn't survive that kind of arithmetic."I closed my eyes. The image of Michael sitting at the head of the table, looking at me with gentle, staged pity while the guards closed in, burned behind my eyelids

Emma I stared at Daniel, the spoon slipping from my fingers and dropping back into the bowl with a quiet splash.“A deal?” I echoed, my voice flat, almost hollow. “I just lost my child, Daniel. My husband traded me for my best friend, and I signed away four years of my life three hours ago on a hospital tray. I don’t want a deal.”Daniel didn’t flinch. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a folder, and set it on the table between us. He didn’t push it toward me. He just rested his hand on top of it.“Hear me out before you decline,” he said, his tone entirely even. “My grandfather’s health is deteriorating rapidly. The Stanford board requires stability, and more importantly, Gerald’s succession clause is explicit. To assume full control of the Stanford Group and lock Michael out permanently, I need to be married and produce a legitimate heir within the year.”The air in the room suddenly felt suffocatingly dense.I looked from the folder up to his grey eyes. The lingerin

Chapter six EmmaThe wind whipped against my skin, sending a shudder through my entire body. I stood frozen on the ledge, my breathing coming in shallow gasps as the man holding my arm slowly pulled me back onto the solid floor of the roof.My heart thundered against my ribs, each beat suffocating. The dark coat, the broad shoulders, the sharp jaw, and those cold, piercing grey eyes, it wasn't a hallucination brought on by blood loss.“Daniel Stanford?” I choked out, my voice barely recognizable even to myself. He didn't let go of my arm. His grip was firm, yet surprisingly careful around the fabric of my coat, ensuring I wouldn't slip.“What are you doing here?” I asked, staring at him in utter disbelief. “Why… why are you here?”“It doesn’t matter,” Daniel said evenly. His voice was low. "You’re coming with me.”“I don’t…” I swallowed hard, trying to clear the fog in my mind. “I don’t understand. You don't even know me. I can count how many times we have met since I married your
