LOGINThe bus finally came to a halt and the doors opened with a hiss. The fog now cleared, like heavy smoke parting ways for a clearer view of the world. A huge building stood in front of them with the name "GRAND HOTEL".
Elara waited at the step of the bus. Being the first in line, the rest were probably expecting her to go down first, but she hesitated. What if she stepped out and something eats her? Seeing that she wouldn't go down, a woman from the back marched forward and said in a slightly irritated voice, "The more second we delay, the closer we get to being wiped out. I don't think time here waits for anyone. You were given enough while you were still alive." She shoved her aside with an arm and stepped out. Without turning to look behind, she proceeded inside the hotel. One by one, the others also stepped out of the bus and it felt like she was the only one left, until... "Are you scared?" She turned sharply and saw perfect man standing by the pole with his arms crossed. He nudged his brows at her and she pulled her brows into a slight frown. "Are you not?" She asked back and turned to look outside the bus again. Scared is a lesser word to what she is feeling at the moment. "Do you want me to hold your hand and walk you down?" he asked again. Elara clenched her fist and said, "I'll actually appreciate if you can keep your mouth shut." "Alright," he said and pushed his body from the pole. "Get out of my way then," he said. Elara turned to the side and watched him get off the bus. She pulled her brows into a deeper frown and cursed under her breath. She finally stepped down and immediately, she heard the bus doors shut close behind her. She stepped on the blood-red carpet of the portico and entered the lobby. The chandelier that hung down was shaped like a spider web and the art decor was something out of a horror imagination. "So, what now?" Someone clapped their hands, bringing their attention together. "How about we introduce ourselves?" Another asked. "Does anyone knows why we are here? I was supposed to be...dead, but I woke up to this world and it's not even the afterlife," another scaredy-cat like her said. Elara knew she must have caught him in tears at a point. "Okay then. We'll start with the introductions and talk about the others next. I'll go first," the man said. "I'm Jax." He gestured his hand to the next person. "Leo." "Rue." "Elara." "Cipher." Out of the five of them, only Rue and Cipher appears to be...different. Rue, on one hand wears a frown each time. She looks like someone who isn't comfortable with hanging out with people and she appears older than the rest of them. Then Cipher on the other hand appears calm and composed. He is someone they need to be worried about. Everything about him just seem suspicious. "Thank you for your cooperation," Jax continued. "Though, I'll like to ask, is this everybody's first time?" "First time?" Rue huffed. "I can't believe I'm hanging out with some set of newbies." Everyone turned to look at her. "I-it's not your first time here?" Leo asked. "I hate it when weak people talk to me. It's pathetic!" She shot Leo a glare and looked away. That didn't sit well with Elara. She could see Leo lowering his head in shame. "So what's the big deal if you aren't a newbie?" she confronted her. "No one asked to be here in the first place. I believe we all died and ended up here one way or another. It's the first time for some of us and we're still yet to figure out what this place even is." "Wrong," Rue said. "It's obvious what this place already is. It's hell. I've seen it with my own eyes. And one thing I will appreciate is if you all don't mind me. I don't like getting involved with people as you see. That only puts me in danger." Elara shook her head and that was when Jax spoke up. "I see. So that explains the scars and bruises on your body. You did look like you've went through hell indeed." "But why is no one asking the obvious question?" Elara raised her voice. "And what is that?" asked Jax "This place. It isn't the afterlife, is it? With everything I went through and how I died, I shouldn't be getting punished this way." "Now we're talking," Rue said. "I've been here for almost a week now and the things I've seen and the places I've been, they are so unreal. The real horror started when they started to kill people. I couldn't believe it at first, but once you die here, you die in the real world. It makes me wonder if I'm currently in a coma and my life depends on if I survive here or not. But it's been a week and yet, I don't see any end to this!" She clenched her hands and expressed her frustration. "By the way, isn't the game starting late than usual today?" Elara looked at Cipher who had just spoken. He has his back leaned against the wall and his hand raised to his front, as if admiring it. "Have you also been here longer than us?" Jax asked with slightly raised brows. Cipher pulled the corner of his lips. "Who would have thought, right? Because I didn't advertise myself like Rue here." He gestured his hand to where Rue was and she shot him an angry look."She is still waiting for me," Leo suddenly said. "I told her I would be home soon. She knows I always keep my words. Why did I have to die so unfairly? I haven't even done anything wrong. After years of trying, I finally settled down with the woman after my heart, but death is so cruel. I don't know how many days must have passed, but I wouldn't want her to wait for me when I'm not even sure if I'm going to make it out of here. She should live on and be happy, find someone good who will cherish her and give her the kind of peace she deserves. But," he broke down in tears, "I really don't want her to move on without me. Even if it's ten years, I still want her to wait for me. I want her to only think about me. If that's being selfish then let me be selfish."Elara felt her eyes twitch at his words and it stirred something in her. She didn't see that as being selfish, but as someone who is in love and wants his woman to grab onto the last straw of hope even as he is also grabbing on. M
Elara knew that Cipher was suspicious. What if he is the one behind everything? But come to think of it, how was it possible that she was immediately transported to a world like this shortly after she got hit? Was it some kind of a glitch? She wished she had answers. Just like Rue said, it could be that they were all in a coma and hanging on to a thread of life. Then, was this world that gap between life and death? She imagined being in a hospital bed with machines all around her and an oxygen passed through her nose. Then she imagined her sister, Bella, sitting by her bedside and Marcus walking in after speaking to the doctor. The scene played out right in front of her:"How did it go? What did the doc say?" Bella asked, her brows pulled in concern.Marcus shook his head and his tone dropped from the usual composed one, "He doubts if she's going to make it, but he said there's a possibility. I mean, look at how damaged her head is. Even if she recovers, she might not be the same pe

Elara pressed both of her palms on the hard surface of the ground and she cried aloud, her cries echoing off at a distance. The pains she had felt a while ago came rushing back and she brought one of her hands up to her chest, squeezing at it. The scene kept replaying in her head and she repulsed at the thought of it. How can she be working all day with little rest while chunking on cheap foods just to make sure everyone was fine and the only way they could repay her was to rub on each other in her absence? Her own boyfriend and her sister?! That was one hell of a betrayal, the definition of being stabbed right at the back. She soon started to feel nauseous and she gulped before throwing up on the floor. She wiped her lips with the hand of her cloth and wondered why the angels had not yet spoken a word or come to take her. Didn’t she die a while ago and is now in the afterlife? She raised her head for the first time and looked around the place. She slowly blinked and stood to her feet
Elara sank into her chair in her working space. By now, she is sure that everyone must have heard. Still, she pretended to work. Time passed and finally, everyone started leaving for home. One by one, Elara watched them till she was the only one left. Her boss had left earlier than the rest of them. She sank further into her thoughts, remembering what the boss had called her work again and again in her head. Trash. His words rang like a bell and each time, her heart sank further. It brought back the memories of the time where she had boldly seen the words ‘Rejected’ in the mails she had sent. She stared at the short mail she had typed, ready to be sent and she read all over again."Hi Dr. Solen Pierce. My name is Elara Vance. I have seen your designs and how creative you are in developing your games. Actually, I have written a script for a game and I would like you to review it. It would be a pleasure to hear back from you."There was an attachment after the message and the pointer of
Elara ran after her boss the moment she sighted him. The manuscript in her hand flayed violently and she called after him;“Sir Ferguson!” she raised her other hand in the air as if to wave him to stop walking. She had just finished working on her novel project and was hoping he would hear her out this time. Actually, this was not the first time she would be running after him to submit a manuscript. This has been going on for almost a year now.The other staffs called her ‘crazy’. It was because she was persistent and wouldn’t stop trying to convince the boss to take a look at her manuscript. Even though she had written more than 20 novels for the company, the boss has never acknowledged her hard work. It wasn’t even as if she was earning much, but it was just enough to lean on for the time being.Elara believes in her writing and if only the boss actually gives her manuscript a chance will he realize that it could set their company for life.
