Chapter 9

Author: Perfect Timing
Since I was little, Walter and Diana hated me for not showing emotions like "normal" kids.

I wasn't sweet like Chloe, never said the right things, didn't know how to fake nice—so they dumped me in the sticks with my grandparents before they ever struck it rich.

Best days of my life.

Grandpa pushed me around in a squeaky old wheelbarrow, racing me up the garden paths. He'd dig in the soil while I rolled around laughing beside him.

Grandma stitched me plush dolls, swearing I deserved the same pretty things city kids had.

But it didn't last.

Walter's business tanked, and he came crawling back. He drained every penny my grandparents had, left them sick and broke—left me too.

Within a year, they were gone.

Walter dragged me back like dead weight, calling me a curse. Said I didn't even cry when they died.

Chloe, high on Walter and Diana's favoritism, made it her hobby to ruin me—ripping my homework, dumping my food. Even when Walter got rich, nothing changed.

I filed my transfer and enrolled at another school—an Ivy abroad.Years ago, Grandma hugged me close, pointing at that university's name on the TV."Allie, get into a good college someday. Stand up for yourself. Your grandpa and I won't be here forever. Don't worry about tuition—just aim high..."She'd only finished elementary school and ruined her eyesight working side jobs to raise Walter. She had no clue how pricey—or impossible—that dream really was.But now, I'd made it.The day I left, I moved quietly—no goodbyes, no speeches. Just me and the road.As the car pulled toward the airport, a massive truck went rogue and barreled at us. In seconds, my ride was scrap metal. And behind the wheel? Chloe. The truck slammed in. The car exploded into fire. Chloe stumbled out, cackling like a madwoman."You're finally dead! If I can't marry into money, Allison, then you don't get to live easy either! How's it feel to be ground into pieces, huh? That's what you get for always going a

Chloe's reputation went up in flames after that night.Darian made sure she got punished, and the school forum roasted her alive:[I've hated Chloe Ackley forever. Anyone near Darian got bullied by her crew. She had it coming.][She acted like royalty just for dating him. Imagine if she actually married into the Drummonds. Thank god karma showed up.]Her family had to beg, bribe, and basically sell their souls to drag her out of that mess.Me? Mission accomplished. I scored twenty million in cash, ten houses across the country, and a fat stack of stock. The total value was fifty million. The only problem? Disappearing without a trace.Darian had completely dumped Chloe, but now all his attention was glued on me.I dodged his confessions a few times, but deep down I knew—time to plan my escape.Right when I was about to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Drummond, the Ackleys crashed back in.Chloe looked awful. Her skin was gray, her vibe sucked, nothing like the smug queen she'd been a mo

Felt like hours before it finally popped open—cops must've pulled the car over.Darian's hands shook while he fumbled with the ropes. Then, right there, he smacked himself twice and crushed me in a hug."I'm sorry. If I'd gotten to you sooner, this wouldn't have happened. You know what I kept thinking in that squad car? If anything happened to you... I'd never forgive myself."His tears bled straight through my shoulder. From his shaky rambling, I pieced it together—he'd run into Chloe right when I texted him. That tiny pause almost cost both of us everything. On the ride to the station, he never let go of my hand, like I might vanish if he blinked. After my statement, the interrogation kicked off. The frat boys were a pathetic mess on the floor, crying for mercy. One finally cracked. "I don't wanna go to prison—I'll talk! It was a girl named Ms. Ackley. She paid us for this and... the last one!"The cop squinted. "The last one?"The guy gulped. "She made us fake that restaura

That's when Rainee burst in, out of breath, eyes blazing. "I can prove Leah's innocent! Chloe told me she wanted to take Leah to dinner to apologize—that's the only reason they went."And Chloe, seriously? How could Leah have staged the whole thing in advance when YOU were the one who invited her?"Chloe's face drained. She never saw her little sidekick flipping on her."Rainee, are you even my friend? Whose side are you on?!"Rainee stood firm. "I WAS your friend. But all these years I was just backup—someone you used to gang up on others. Leah's different. These past few days with her have been the happiest I've ever felt in college."Chloe's panic hit full tilt. She spun to Darian, sobbing. "Darian, listen, it's not what you think—""Enough!" His voice cut sharp, his eyes heavy with disappointment. "I thought you were just spoiled, that's why I always let things slide. But this? You couldn't even stand an innocent girl. I need space. From today on, don't contact me."The word

When I came to, I was in a hospital bed, the whole place reeking of disinfectant.Across the room, Chloe's shrill voice cut through the air."Darian, she's faking it! Those guys were her doing—she wanted pity! Don't be stupid!"I pushed myself up, and Darian was instantly at my side, eyes wide like I might snap in half."Don't. You're hurt."The doctor rushed in. "Mild concussion, fractured arm, multiple cuts on her legs. Serious. She needs rest—and calm."Darian clutched my hand, voice shaking. "Why would you do something that reckless? You're just one person—how could you take them on?"I forced a shaky smile. "I knew I couldn't. But if Chloe got hurt, you'd lose it. I'm used to pain—grew up with it. She's never even broken a nail. I wasn't about to let her take the hit."His heartbeat was so loud it felt like it filled the room. "You... like me that much?"Heat rushed to my cheeks. He waited, eyes burning with hope. Before I could answer, Chloe barged in, mascara streaked,
