6:40 in the evening, Creekview Manor, the charity dinner held by Kade Pharma of Pack Deimos is starting in 20 minutes.
The core executives of the pack gathered together, with many important people of the city there supporting the event. The manor is brightly lit, the dazzling light able to be seen miles away. The guests are all glamorous, neatly dressed in their luxurious custom-made and glimmering jewelry, looking noble.
Media are squatting at the entrance, some wandering around the banquet with their cameras flashing nonstop, capturing the glamorous faces with their lens, phones on gimbals or simply in hands. The host of the dinner party though, Bruce Kade, has not yet appeared. The guests gather together in twos and threes, chatting heatedly.
Mia has an old mobile phone on a gimbals. With a fake media ID, she has been able to sneak into the party without rising suspicion.
"Remember, you are hired by Mrs. Adina as her private photographer. That’s her thing, everyone knows it. Except she is not coming today. She hurt her leg recently and few knows yet. If anyone asks, that’s your cover story.” In her earphones, Robert explains her borrowed identity for the day.
“Roger that,” Mia murmurs as she walks over to a corner where she scans the whole room with her camera, “Where is the target? Shouldn’t he be here by now?”
Clint Wood is the reason Mia sneaked into the party for today. He is the head of a third party firm that handles some of the Duncan Family’s financial affairs. The Duncan family doesn’t deal with these affairs with their official account with good reason. People like Clint Wood, they know things. Allegedly, things about her nightmare night, too.
That’s what Mia is after today.
Though a year has passed, her narrow escape on that rainy night is still vivid like yesterday, printed in her mind. The pouring rain, the hunting steps behind her, the haunting memories, Elena’s vicious laugh, and the phone call that never go through, all mixed together. Every time Mia closes her eyes, it haunts her.
From that day on, revenge became the sole purpose of what is left of her life.
The first three months were hellish where Mia struggled on the edge of death. Elena’s drug didn’t kill her, but the torture was worse than death. After that, Mia spent nine long months gathering small drops of her family possessions, and information about the Duncan family, and that night.
The information is a hard access.
She is dead to the whole pack, as in, her whole life, after that night. She didn’t dare to contact anyone, even friends. At least there is no further danger if she remains “dead”.
But that limits her help, and info on everything. Clint Wood is the only solid lead she got in nine months.
She has to come.
Otherwise she would never touch anything with THAT MAN’s scent. Alpha Bruce is coming tonight. It’s a pack’s event, and Kade Pharma is HIS property. Though she has severed herself from the pack’s mindlink web, and her mate bond with him, there is always a risk.
After all, their souls were once bonded together in the most intimate way.
“The target has arrived 3 minutes ago. Do you not have eyes on him?” Robert’s question comes through the microphone.
Mis drops her phone and search the room with her own eyes. Still nothing.
“Negative.”
“Give me a sec,” Noisy typing replaces Robert’s voice. Soon he comes back: “Got it. The target entered the building through the back door and headed directly to the second floor. Some emergency it seems.”
“The second floor...” Mia’s eyes land on the huge spiral stairs. It’s too obvious. If anyone recognizes her or take a picture of her when she goes up, it would be trouble.
“The escape ladder outside. More convenient.” Robert says quickly as if he heard her thoughts.
“Roger,” Mia puts away her gadgets and heads out with her head low.
Just at this moment, everyone's attention is pulled toward one single direction. A girl right beside her gasps, holding her cheeks in her hands and screams: “God!”
Doesn’t dare to go the opposite way against everyone, Mia stops and mingles among the crowd, looking up to see what caught their attention.
Just a glimpse and Mia freezes.
A very familiar figure is coming down the luxurious stairs Mia was trying to avoid.
Tall and straight, he has broad shoulders and long legs. The dark brown striped suit gives him a solemn look. Black hair, green eyes, angular face, high nose...His face is sharp, yet a pair of gold-rimmed glasses successfully transformed this aggressiveness into a insightful sense of wisdom.
Keeping his eyes low, he scans the room indifferently. His eyes land on no one, but everyone feels his fierce vigour.
He stops three stairs from the floor.
The whole room hold their breathe, waiting from him to officially start the event.
A sharp pain stabs Mia’s heart. She wants to look away. She wants to hide in a corner, to leave the room as planned, to get her target.
But her limbs are disobeying her. She is nailed there, her eyes pasted on that man.
The man that catches everyone’s attention in every room. The man who used to be her whole world.
Daisy tries to dash over to him the moment she saw him. Her paws stamping anxiously as she urges Mia: “Go to him! To him!”“Stop the barking!” Mia has to roar back at her reckless wolf. Did Daisy not learn anything from that night a year ago?She can’t go to him. She can’t let him see them. To him, she is dead. But there is little Mia is able to do besides yelling at Daisy. She herself is also freezing where they are. Her knees shivering as are her hands. It takes all her strength to just remain standing.Scanning the room, Bruce bows lightly before he nods a little: “Welcome, everyone, to today’s celebration. I know you are all excited about our latest results, which has been announced through all channels, so I won’t bore you with the details here.”Saying so, he raises a hand and leads everyone’s eyes to a man standing on the left of the stairs: “Thanks to Ivan Osborn and his research team, who managed this great accomplishment with decent time and budget.”Applause raises as he co
Bruce stands in that empty corner, confused at his excited wolf: “There is nothing here.”“Yes, there is!” Aspen insists, lowering his head and sniffs around. He sniffs from left to right and up and down, occasionally stops and thinks before he continue. Finally when he found the wall Mia leaned against he jumps up: “Here! Right here! She came back! She was here!”“She is?” Bruce mumbles, couldn’t believe what he just heard.Staring at the gray-green wallpapered corner for a very long moment, Bruce then slowly stretches out a hand, putting his slightly trembling fingers over it.“Are you sure?” Bruce tries to feel the wall. He is dreadful to“Definitely! A hundred percent sure!” Aspen pushes his nose close to sniff again, taking in the scent carefully, “It’s her! She was right here not too long ago!”Thank the moon goddess! She is still alive. There were so many sleepless nights where he struggles in bed, haunted by the possibility that she might have died already. Bruce clenches his
Paused, Clint Wood is obviously surprised by Mia’s presence. Face to face with him, Mia is not sure whether to excite or panic. Good thing is she found the target, but she hasn’t come out of the shock of seeing Bruce, and right now she is caught off guard, too. But there is no time to hesitate. Taking a deep breath, she charges up with a swift move, her stun gun pressed on his waist as she threats in a low voice: “Don’t move. I just want to ask a few questions. Play along or it would end badly for you.” The stun gun is in a gun’s shape. Wood only felt a hard metal pressed on his waist and in shock he turns to look. “I said don’t move!” Mia hisses at him with a shove on his shoulder. Being crafty for a living, Wood instantly corporates with his hands up in the air: “Okay, I won’t move. Anything you want, we can talk about it.” Mia is the more nervous one. Thin sweat breaks out in her palm, she has to clench the stun gun so hard her joints hurt. Taking another deep breath, Mia hi
Surrounded by a crowd, it took all his upbringing and patience engraved in his blood for Bruce to stay put for Sophia’s return. When Sophia finally comes back, Bruce is right in the middle of a patriarchal lecture from Theodore, the Alpha of Pack Scarlett Stone: “Next month, Seraphina Estate in the southern subrub. You must come. Sharing the same city, our two packs should pick up friendly events like this.”Sophia gives a light, firm nod from a distance outside the elite circle surrunding Bruce, and his eyes immediately light up. He basically cut off the old man’s slow speech, squeezing out the last drop of courtesy as he says with curved lips: “Sorry, but my secretary is here with an important matter. I’ll let her handle the matter of the manquet next month though. You are absolutely right about us improving contact.”As he speak, he pats Theodore on his arm, barely expressing his courtesy before he pushes aside the crowd and leaves.“Speak,” Heading out the ballroom, Bruce demands.
Fury rushes to the top of her head, Mia would have left several bullet holes on him to teach him the consequences of being smart and playing her around! But Daisy feels danger coming and that calms her down fast. The steps are coming in their direction, closer and closer.“He is coming! It’s him! He is here for us!” Unlike the panicking, anxious Clint Wood who is now curling on the floor with his head under his arms, Daisy is filled with excitement and joy.If it’s not that Daisy can’t embarrass her in front of anyone else, Mia would have stun-gunned Daisy too.The steps almost made to her door. And if it’s really Bruce, then he is definitely coming for her. Mia closes her eyes to calm herself, shutting her agitated wolf out, she turns to Clint Wood.“Very brave of you,” Mia gives him a sinister smirk, patting him on the shoulder, “Thanks for the help today. I’ll come for you again, that’s a promise.”Her tone gentle and soft, yet her smile gives Clint Wood a cold shiver. Clint Wood p
Woken up by a basin of cold water poured on him, Clint Wood is totally out of there for long.Four bulky bodyguards on his sides, Clint found himself in a rather hard spot with a fearful Alpha sitting in front of him, eyes ice cold. The Alpha of pack Deimos. Clint doesn't need to check the internet to know this man. Besides the sullen Alpha stands THE secretary of his, her eyes with a shade of confusion but mostly pity when she looks over.Clint understands her look -- he is NOT in a good shape. Sitting on the floor, he is dripping all over from the tip of his hair. His hands shaking from the stun gun a moment ago. He can’t seem to sit straight because of the burn on his waist. But the Alpha remains his top one problem -- Clint can’t read this man -- his eyes are too deep. Clint can only assume the Alpha is not very happy from the timid look of the secretary.“The one who knocked you out, what did they want?” Giving Clint a moment to wake up, Bruce takes the time to observe the oily m
One wolf and one person, both fall in silence instantly.Mia herself can’t pin down why she is suddenly so angry. She just escaped from a high-secured manor, and neither her wolf nor her only friend would give her a moment of peace but keep on nagging.Yes, that’s why!Sitting there quietly for a moment with long, deep breath, Mia finally calms down, though still a bit frustrated.Or, she has never been in real peace ever since that night from a year ago.Whatever. Nothing in the world is frustration-free. Mia sighs habiturally, preparing to turn the page with an apology to her wolf and Robert. They meant well for her, she knew. But they don’t understand her feelings, either. But before she could do it, Robert starts with a cautious tone: “I’m sorry. I just hope it can be easier for you. I know you had a rough year...”Rough doesn’t justify it.“A year and seven days,” Mia cuts Robert off with a low voice, “Three hundred and seventy-two days, I counted them one by one. I counted when
The city of Vaxbury, night time. Having few people on the street, and 24-hour convenience stores and pharmacies are the most serious stores here. Most places are shining in a debauchery light. Red, green, purple. Giving a illusional halo. The kind of halo that shouts danger and strange for most people, but for people who seeks getting drunk and stupid, it’s just the place.Turn right off the main road not 20 minutes off the highway, Mia arrives right at such a store with purple light shining and jumping. Dozens of people lined up in front of the small gate guarded by two bulky, mean-looking men. It doesn’t look like a welcoming place, but with a VIP card with fancy dresses, you will get right in with almost touching level of considerative service. The woman right in frong of Mia holds such a card. They call her Madam Lya.Madam Lya has the card between her two fingers like a cigratte, flashing the two guards with a wink. They return a wide smile, greeting her as they step out of the w
